Terms to Know

Certified Organic

A product marketed organic requires annual inspection and certification by a National Organic Program accredited agent. Certified organic farms follow management practices to improve soil health and fertility without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other prohibited substances. It also requires specific record keeping and proof of organic seeds/inputs sources, post-harvest handling, and field practices.

Organically grown

These products are not certified organic by an accredited agent. The grower chooses to grow their products without synthetic additives like pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Sustainably grownA practice of growing agricultural products based on an understanding of the ecosystem (relationship between organisms and their environment).

Pesticide-free

Products are produced without the use of artificial pesticides.

No-till farming

A method of growing crops from year to year without disturbing the soil through tillage to build healthier soil and prevent soil erosion.

Integrated Pest Management

The careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pests and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment.

Cedar Valley Healthy Hometown

Waterloo and Cedar Falls will continue their Blue Zones Project journey to improve well-being as “Cedar Valley Healthy Hometown.”

In May of 2012, Waterloo and Cedar Falls were named two of the initial Blue Zones Project demonstration communities in Iowa receiving assistance from experts to develop and implement a blueprint for making permanent environmental, social and policy changes that transition people into healthier behaviors that can lead to longer, happier lives. They successfully achieved Blue Zones Community Certification in 2015.

The Cedar Valley is transforming where we live, work and play, and making healthy choices easier. A healthy hometown is a thriving hometown with a high quality of life, local pride and a strong economy.

GET INVOLVED! To start sourcing local food for your institution, school, or for personal use please contact Jodie at [email protected] or 319-273-7883. Established in 1997, the UNI Local Food Program provides assistance to local farmers, consumers, and businesses to simplify purchasing locally grown and produced food.

FARM TO SCHOOLFARM TO SCHOOL enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and at early care and education sites. Through initiatives fostered by Farm to School, students gain access to healthy, local foods, and benefit experientially from school gardens, cooking lessons, and farm field trips.

These elementary schools in Cedar Falls participate in Farm to School snack programs: Aldrich, Hansen, and Lincoln. These programs are a partnership between the school parent organizations (Aldrich CARE, Hansen PTA, Lincoln PALS), UNI Local Food Program, and UNI Health, Recreation and Community Service, and local producers.

IOWA LOCAL FOOD DAY is a celebration of Iowa farmers and local foods that takes place during National Farm to School Month. Union Community School District, Waterloo Schools, and Waverly-Shell Rock School District participated in 2019.

Waterloo Schools: FoodCorps members and Black Hawk County health educators conducted taste tests in their respective gardens, served squash at Lowell Family Night, and participated in the annual Great Apple Crunch using local apples. Union Community Schools: Served local loose-meat hamburgers, roasted sweet cinnamon squash, and apple slices. Waverly-Shell Rock School District: Served local apples, yogurt, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and lettuce. Additionally, Family and Consumer Science students from Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School made kale salad samples and a poster board about Iowa Local Food Day and high school students sampled local brussel sprouts.

10 Things to Know About Local Food Systems

Source: Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Local Foods Program

1. You can play a part. Everyone can play a part in supporting local foods systems, from our decisions as consumers or as community citizens.

2. Buying local supports your local economy. Food dollars stay in your community when you buy local food.

3. Federal support for local food in the farm bill illustrates the support for local and regional food systems by the federal government. (Farmers Market Nutrition Program for WIC & Seniors, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP])

4. Local food and food justice. When defining your food system and the changes you are hoping to see, it is vital to create an inclusive space that takes into account your community’s diversity, including race, class, gender and more.

5. Local or organic. Local and organic are two different things; “local” food is produced and processed geographically near its point of sale. “Organic” food is produced following a defined set of standards set by USDA. By knowing your farmer locally, you have the ability to become familiar with their production practices regardless of label.

6. Children are reconnected to food by growing and eating local. Studies show that children are more inclined to eat new kinds of food if they know where it comes from (www.farmtoschool.org).

7. Local food systems can enhance food security. Iowa imports up to 90% of its food from out of state. What happens when our national food supply chain is disrupted, by natural or human activities? More local production will increase Iowa’s food security.

8. Local foods bring new markets and economic opportunities for beginning farmers and food entrepreneurs.

9. Eating local foods leads to healthier eating habits. Produce bought from a local producer has often been picked within 24 hours of your purchase. Locally grown produce can be more nutrient dense than produce shipped from across the country.

10. Defining Local Food: How do you define local? How does your favorite restaurant or grocery store define local?
