2020/2021 CALENDAR
SUSTAINING EXCELLENCEA letter to our community
ROBERT O’LEARYSUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
On behalf of the Board of Education, faculty, and staff of the Vandalia-Butler City Schools, I want to welcome you to the start of another school year! Throughout history, human beings have tried to organize time; a calendar is the most common system used to satisfy this task. This year, the District is once again providing our community a unified District calendar organizing time and reflecting important events of the 2020-2021 school year. It is a little different this year, as you will see, as many events we would typically schedule have not been included due to the restrictions brought about by COVID-19. The passage of time is interesting to think about in the times we are living. Twenty-three weeks have passed since the time we were forced to close school buildings in March of 2020 to the start of this school year. That is almost six months or half of a year. A typical school year is 37 to 38 weeks when you take out the holiday breaks and spring break. I share this with you as a point to reflect upon. Think, for a minute, about what all has transpired over this time and that which would've transpired and didn't due to COVID-19. It certainly puts things into perspective and, at least for me, makes me value time, especially the current moment, a little bit more. It also makes me think about the virus, COVID-19. This virus has disrupted our schedules these almost six months; it is a virus that is here with us that we are still learning more about and learning how to live with every day. As we start this school year, we are working hard to learn to live with COVID-19, continue our educational mission for students, and continue making the safety of our students and staff our number one priority. Therefore, we are approaching this school year with some different approaches and techniques, including scheduling events. This calendar starts with our school year's nuts and bolts and the dates most pertinent to school and our mission to educate our students. We will continually monitor the situation and hope to add some of the timeless traditions we have celebrated in previous years. We will undoubtedly innovate, make changes, do some new things, and based upon changes we make this school year, w. We will also create new traditions to post in future calendars. Please enjoy the beautiful artwork of our very talented students in this calendar and use it as a resource to organize your time throughout this school year as we pass through the seasons of the year. As the saying goes, "There there is an appointed time for everything, for everything, there is a season." Let the 2020-2021 school year be a season of health, collaboration, determination, and success for the entire Vandalia-Butler community! It is a great time to be an Aviator! WE ARE AVIATORS!
