Since the start of lockdown, the operations team at Composites UK has been working hard to support members through the unprecedented times COVID-19 has brought. Disseminating advice and interpreting Government guidelines to 380 member companies and the wider industry, on top of delivering our usual high level service. As with all industries, COVID-19 has had an impact on a number of sectors in the composites market. Sectors such as automotive and aerospace have been particularly badly hit, with a knock-on effect down their supply chains; others such as defence have remained steady and we are already starting to see recovery in construction and infrastructure. Composites UK is now working with businesses to identify new opportunities and diversify to new sectors, as well as lobbying Government to provide the much-needed support to help build more resilient supply chains. In June we launched our Annual Report for the Composites Industry, the first of its kind using data from The Hub – our UK Composites Capabilities Database. The report is free-of-charge to member companies and is a detailed look at the UK composites supply chain looking at regional activities and market specialisms, and will be key in helping us to monitor the composites market’s recovery over the coming years. Composites UK will be using The Hub data to inform the national and local industrial strategy. At the start of the year, I joined Composites UK as Chief Executive Officer and was tasked by the Board of Directors to work with the operations team to develop a new strategy for the organisation. That strategy has been developed and was presented to the Board, as well as members at the 2020 Annual General Meeting and includes new vision, mission and purpose statements that are underpinned by a set of values that the Board and operations team have agreed. We have also developed a set of strategic objectives based around Policy, Industrial Strategy, Business Improvement, Technology and Promotion that are underpinned by our core capabilities in Membership and Events. Given the impact of COVID-19, we have been able to test the strategy and determine that it is even more important that we deliver on our strategic objectives in order to support the industry through such difficult times. The UK’s Composites Sector contributes significantly to many priority industries including Aerospace and Automotive. Our Annual Hub Report has shown that Composites UK members invest in local economies across every region of the UK, and can contribute to the governments “levelling up” agenda through the provision of skilled people with high-value jobs. We praise the Government for the steps they have taken to support business through the COVID-19 crisis. However, to enable industry to secure its future, further measures are urgently needed. We would urge the Government to: • Consider further support to protect jobs and retain skills in sectors where the impact of

Covid-19 will last longer and employment is worst hit. • Support UK industry by accelerating procurement in adjacent sectors and provide

new opportunities for UK supply chains to diversify. • Boost investment in innovation to deliver on the UK’s ‘net-zero’ ambitions, by increasing

The replacement of metal parts by composite materials in the areas of automotive engineering and aerospace allows for the construction of lightweight, energy efficient vehicles, offering high fatigue and corrosion resistance. With growing demands and increasing part sizes, manufacturers seek to reduce costs, minimize scrap rates and improve their overall production processes while reducing environmental impact and supporting compliance with VOC regulations.

Chemlease® solutions for high-volume production in the automotive sector Lightweight design is becoming more of a focus in automotive construction; as a result, composites and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have been more commonly used in high performance cars in recent years. Specialists that offer a complete portfolio of dedicated products for the respective production process can give automotive components manufacturers a boost. Zyvax® release systems for composite materials for structural components and interior trim for aerospace industry Chem-Trend supplies release systems for composite materials that are used to manufacture components for interior trims as well as structural components such as vertical fins. Because the number of manufactured components made from composite materials is constantly increasing, efficient production is becoming more and more important in aircraft construction. Zyvax® mould release systems from Chem-Trend are developed specifically to address the molding needs of premium aerospace composites materials.

Zyvax® TakeOff™ is a newly developed water-based, semi-permanent release agent (IPS 12-02-002-03) specifically formulated for aerospace manufacturers and is especially effective for vacuum bagged and autoclave molding of epoxy carbon fiber prepreg. This water-based release agent does not require a sealer in most cases when used on high-quality mold surfaces in aerospace and other epoxy prepreg applications.

when using solvent-based release agents. TakeOff™ needs only a minimal number of coats to become effective, with short dry times between applications. It also provides multiple release capability, potentially contributing to improved productivity in the manufacturing process.

Zyvax® TakeOff™ is ideal for aircraft application because it is specifically formulated to work on extremely large epoxy moulded parts and uses an environmentally conscious water-based carrier. Additionally, there is very low transfer of the release agent to the moulded part. That can significantly reduce any cleaning process that might be required prior to a post-molding procedure, such as painting and gluing. This saves material, time and money for manufacturers.
