The need for flexibility has been paramount for more than a year and it is likely to be a continuing trend in 2021.

As a club, the West Coast Eagles have appreciated the capacity of all of corporate members to adjust to the uncertainties of the environment created by the world wide pandemic.

We are all hopeful we have turned the corner and are optimistic about playing the majority of games at Optus Stadium at close to full capacity, if not at its maximum.

Because of the world we live in the AFL has revealed venues and starting times for only

the first six rounds – and we have three of those games at Optus Stadium.

We kick off with round one against Gold Coast and then play other important matches against Port Adelaide (Easter Saturday) and Collingwood (round five). While there is a little uncertainty around how the year will flow, it’s reasonable to assume each of those games will provide strong challenges for our playing group.

The Suns stunned the Eagles in round two last year and are a team brimming with rising stars while Port Adelaide are a 2020 preliminary finalist and Collingwood stopped West Coast’s assault in week one of the 2020 finals.

So there will be much at stake in all of those games and what looms as an intriguing start to a season that holds even more mystique than most.

As a club we will work to the block of fixtures as the AFL releases them, understanding that the landscape can change quickly, depending on border restrictions that could be in place.

While we are hoping for a ‘normal’ season that is beyond the club’s control and we will always act in the best interests of our players, our staff, our members and fans. We will continue to abide by the directives of the State and Federal Governments and the health advice they offer.

That said, we’re excited by what lies ahead.

Our players are ultra-keen, they worked hard during an abbreviated pre-season and we look forward to a few players who have excelled on the track taking that to game day and unveiling their talents to the football world.

And we look forward to sharing some of those special moments with you.

WE WILL ALWAYS ACT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF OUR PLAYERS, OUR STAFF, OUR MEMBERS AND FANS.

E A G L E S H O S P I T A L I T Y . C O M . A U 5

Our past player group at the West Coast Eagles goes by the acronym OWLS – older, wiser, larger, slower.

In terms of our club, after the 2020 season, the first half of that moniker rings true…. we’re older and wiser.

You’ll recall that many times in 2020, from world leaders through to community members, we heard the word ‘unprecedented’ uttered. And it was true. On every level we were dealing with something completely foreign to us. A contagious and volatile virus that spread and wreaked havoc on a scale of unimaginable proportions.

But we bonded, worked together, and as a country, a State and a football club we worked our way through the year.

The West Coast Eagles family continued to be incredibly supportive with membership hitting a record of more than 100,000 in a year when opportunities to watch the team at Optus Stadium were limited.

That was both humbling and overwhelming.

More recently, we endured a five-day lock-down which meant our AFLW team had to contend with a disrupted season including border restrictions impeding their ability to play games as scheduled. But they have remained highly resilient, adjusted, and represented our club proudly.

While there is still an element of uncertainty around the ‘new normal’, we all take confidence knowing that we are able to adapt and adjust as required. And, fingers crossed, we are through the worst of it allowing important parts of our lives to resume.

In that regard, football and the West Coast Eagles have been an integral part of our being for as long as most of us can remember. As an important aspect of our social environment and our culture we are hopeful that in 2021 we can engage and connect on the same levels that we have done in recent years.

To our corporate members we say a massive thank you for sticking with us. We hope to repay your loyalty by providing both wonderful experiences and opportunities for your business in 2021.

It is with optimism that we look forward to our 35th

year in the competition, and in particular, being able to embrace those members whose passion and loyalty is so engrained in our club

The 2021 season has been our biggest yet; the AFLW side embracing their second season with enthusiasm, despite ongoing COVID-19 challenges across the nation.

The female athletes have showed resilience and strength often balancing full time careers with their training loads and game day travel.

The developing squad were rewarded with their first season win against the Gold Coast Suns at home in round five.

Leading the charge is new AFLW head coach Daniel Pratt; who has been monumental in the team’s success.

Pratt a former AFL player with North Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as being an important member of the men’s coaching panel since 2014. He builds upon the cornerstones laid by first year coach Luke Dwyer.

A proud father of a young daughter his passion and connection with the players has been clearly evident since day one.

Last year’s forward Coach Michelle Cowan and the 2013 Football Woman of the Year Michelle Cowan moved into a new role this season, as the head of Operations and Player Wellbeing, two critical ingredients in the success of the team’s immediate and long term future.

Cowan also plays a vital part in game day as a bench manager, bringing years of experience to a youthful side.

Liana Nici has also been recruited as the AFLW Player

Development Manager, and works alongside the 2015 Football Woman of the Year Jan Cooper.

In terms of players, the luck of the Irish continued this season, with West Coast recruiting midfield gun, Aisling McCarthy from Tipperary.

She joins fellow Gaelic products in Niamh Kelly and Grace Kelly – sisters who were picked up in the 2020 draft.

McCarthy has been a force to be reckoned with for the side, and is in the side’s top five in terms of disposals, metres gained, contested possessions and clearances.

Gun midfielder Bella Lewis was also snagged at pick three.

The 18-year-old has been instrumental in the team’s success and has headlined in the midfield each week.

Lewis ranks in the top three Eagles for disposals, and top two for contested possessions.

Running alongside her is Mikayla Bowen who continues to grow with each game, being rewarded with the AFLW Rising Star award for her Round 5 performance.

In terms of the 2020 AFLW Draft, the Eagles later swooped on ex-fever netballer Andrea Gilmore, who has been a key forward for the side.

Shanae Davison and Julie-Ann Norrish also rounded out the AFLW team, slotting in at opposite ends of the ground.

Norrish has been a top-tier defender, and Davidson a star on the forward line; the Eagles keen to create more avenues to goals.

Finalising the 2021 AFLW playing list was South Australian duo Amber Ward and Lauren Gauci.

The Eagles elected to pass on their final two selections to snap up these interstate talents, who assisted in the North Adelaide 2020 SANFLW premiership.

They joined other South Australian Product, Katelyn Pope, who has been a pacey midfielder for the club who replaced Mhicca Carter who was struck down with a season ending foot injury.

Former State basketball player Demi Liddle got her opportunity to further her development after inaugural player Ashton Hill continued to rehabilitate her injured knee.

After the rigorous selection process – the West Coast Eagles AFLW side has come out stronger than ever.

A cohesive unit, who have put on thrilling displays of football every weekend in their second year in the AFLW competition.

Pleasingly key partners BHP, Barminco and MLG Oz continued to play a critical role in supporting the female athletes to perform at their very best.
