Small TOWNS BIG ADVENTURES

Icy Strait Point – Beyond the active adventures — like watching the whales, hiking the trails, and flying one of the highest and longest ZipRiders — this is a place for learning the traditions and cultures of the native Tlingit people.

Juneau – Alaska’s state capital can only be reached by air or the sea. With more hiking trails than roads, Juneau welcomes you for a tram ride up the side of Mount Roberts, dog sledding on the huge Mendenhall Glacier, and whale watching in scenic Auke Bay.

Ketchikan – Admire the many totem poles and explore the rich vein of indigenous culture in this quintessential Alaskan town. Fly over Misty Fjords National Monument and look down on thousand-foot-tall waterfalls. Then catch a lumberjack show.

Comprised of the longest river of ice in North America, beginning in Canada and flowing 76 miles to Russell Fjord, the glacier originates at Mount Logan, the continent’s second-tallest mountain. And while 95% of the world’s glaciers are retreating, Hubbard Glacier is still advancing.

As the largest advancing tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier’s terminal face is the dramatic end of a process that began 450 years ago as snowfall on the slopes of Mount Logan. Journey DEEPER INTO THE LAST FRONTIER

Denali National Park boasts six million acres of pristine wild land. The varied subarctic landscape is home to grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves, as well as endangered birds. Wild animals roam as they have for millennia through unspoiled backcountry of taiga forest, alpine tundra, and snow-capped peaks. The sheer expanse of wilderness, the solitude of the single road, and the park’s status as one of the last true, intact, subarctic ecosystems makes Denali one of the best places in the United State to view wildlife in their natural habitat.

The Visitor Center offers fascinating natural history exhibits, films, and the opportunity to meet and speak to rangers about Denali National Park, including its centerpiece mountain, Denali. At 20,320 feet, Denali is North America’s highest peak, and is still growing. Rising miles into the sky, the mountain known as the

Great One towers over the summits of the surrounding Alaska Range. The view on a clear day is a profoundly impressive sight.

The highly protected backcountry that makes up the majority of the park is cleaved only by a solitary road. It runs 92 miles, stretching through evergreen forests into the higher elevations that offer open views of the tundra-covered slopes and river valleys, all framed by the indomitable Alaska Range.

And while the backcountry’s pristine wilderness is protected, De-nali’s front country is open to a range of activities. DENALI

Born of a turn-of-the-century trader who found himself stranded in what is present-day downtown, Fairbanks was founded when gold was discovered nearby and the trading post blossomed into a thriving city that outlasted its gold-rush boom. Today, locals pride themselves on their independence and endurance, with many descended from Native Peoples and the gold-rush prospectors whose self-sufficiency was the driving force of the town’s conception.

Fairbanks hugs the northern bank of the Chena River that converges with the Tanana River. The sternwheelers that navigate these waters afford breathtaking views of the city

and countryside, while also offering a glimpse into Alaska’s rich interior traditions.

Exploring Fairbanks means participating in the experiences that contribute to the city’s description as “extremely Alaska.” Pan for gold in one of the many creeks that still turn up flakes of gold, or admire the native art treasures on display at the Museum of the North, whose shimmering contours reflect the mountain ranges that encircle it. With the locals playing late, including a mid-night-sun baseball game held every solstice, your list of options to explore is as long as the summer nights.

Alaska’s most remote city is also its second largest, a gold-rush boomtown that today is a regional hub for culture and recreation.

Spectacular landscapes line your route all the way to the end of the road, which leads to this charming fishing village, artist colony, and hippie hangout. Feeling more like Cape Cod than a pioneer town — except for the moose that share the streets — Homer buzzes with seafood shacks, ice cream shops, art galleries, and craft centers.

Refuel with a hearty chowder or savory quiche, followed by heavenly pastries. Check out the farmers’ market, whose vendors draw residents and visitors with freshly shucked oysters and locally brewed kombucha. As the “halibut capital of the world,” this place brims with fresh seafood.

Stroll the Spit, a natural causeway extending into Kachemak Bay, and you may spot eagles soaring overhead. Join a fishing trip or watch for whales, porpoise, and seals during the ferry ride to the town of Halibut Cove. It is surrounded by Kachemak Bay State Park, Alaska’s first state park, offering 400,000 acres of mountains, glaciers, and forests.

In summer, outdoor adventurers from Anchorage, four hours north, flock to this area to fish, kayak, hike, and bike. You might spot wild bears from trails that wind through the old-growth spruce forests and parallel the postcard-perfect glaciers, lakes, and ridges.

In the “halibut capital of the world,” moose wander the streets amid bohemian locals, working fishermen, and outdoor adventurers from the city.


HOMERFAIRBANKS

Blending cosmopolitan excitement and the great outdoors, the city has a youthful exuberance that contributes to its lively night-life, eclectic dining, and adventuresome atmosphere.

Beyond the city limits of “Alaska’s Big Apple,” nature commands the terrain. As many as 60 glaciers are located within an hour’s drive. Urbanites can go for an icy hike by day, and by night enjoy Anchorage under the late evening sun, socializing at a down-town brewery over a local craft beer. Even on weekdays it’s not uncommon to find a suited city worker angling for a catch on a lunch break.

Unlike any other American city, Anchorage boasts 250 miles of trails, sees moose passing through its neighborhoods, and is visited by whales that surface in the waters alongside the Tony

Knowles Coastal Trail. And long summers days mean more time to explore its natural beauty and sample its innovative frontier fare late into the sunlit evening.

Anchorage is home to Native Peoples from around the state, making the city the destination for discovering the history, art, and crafts at the heart of the Alaskan indigenous cultures. The Anchorage Museum preserves an extensive collection of native art, spanning prehistoric times to the present day. And the Alaskan artifacts at the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center were curated and interpreted with help from the Alaska Native Heri-tage Center, a renowned cultural center and an exciting place to connect with indigenous residents.

A cosmopolitan city perched on the edge of the wilderness, Anchorage is a gateway to natural attractions and the state’s center for the preservation of Alaskan Native cultures.

The pristine wilderness of the Kenai Peninsula is home to nesting seabirds, countless islands, wetlands, and breathtaking coastal views. And, as the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park, the Harding Icefield — an expanse of ice and snow created over 23,000 years ago — is easily within reach, and culminates in 40 glaciers that dramatically calve into the sea. Throngs of wildlife course below the surface of the glacial waters and glide above them. Pods of humpback whales are known to breach when hunt-ing, seals and sea lions lounge on rocky outcroppings, and bald eagles soar overhead.

The rugged landscape suits Seward’s hardy locals well. Every July 4th, Seward’s runners race 1.5 miles up and down Mount Marathon. Starting at sea level, the race rises 3,000 feet in ele-

vation over very steep terrain. Runners race over gullies, ice, and snow, using their hands to haul themselves to the finish line. And, when not racing up mountains, you can find stalwart locals at city watering holes and dining spots, where you can savor Alaskan seafood, prepared fresh from the ocean to serve on your plate.

Situated at a grand natural intersection where bays and fjords stretching south to the Pacific meet the crested wilderness — and connected to communities extending northwards via the famously scenic Seward Highway — Seward is emblematic of the wildly beautiful state that is Alaska.

Tucked in a luxuriant glacier-carved valley, encircled by the Chugach Mountains and bordering a temperate rainforest, Girdwood is a playground for the artists and extreme athletes who call her home. Meandering up Mt. Riverboat Discovery (Fairbanks) Cruise down the Chena River on the Riverboat Discovery stern-wheeler. The family-owned boats have sailed down Fairbanks’ Chena River for generations. See a bush floatplane take off beside the boat and learn about the role of these pilots in open-ing up the Alaskan interior. Visit an Athabascan Indian village and discover native culture. Cruise past the family home of an Iditarod champion to see how the sled dogs are trained.

Gold Dredge 8 (Fairbanks) Travel on the narrow gauge Tanana Valley Railroad, where you’ll hear tales about prospectors who first flocked to this region hoping to strike it rich. Years later, between 1928 and 1959, Gold Dredge 8 played a key role in the economy of the Tanana Valley. See the mechanized operation that has been named a national engineering landmark and learn about the Trans-Alaska Pipe-line’s importance to domestic oil production. Gold-rush history then comes alive during a tour of the working mining camp, where you can pan for gold.

Day 10 | Vancouver en route to Jasper:Enjoy a relaxing morning taking in the local sights. The excitement continues in the eve-ning as you transfer to Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station and board the legendary VIA Rail Canadian for a spectacular journey through the Rockies eastward to Jasper. Experience vintage charm on rails as you relax while enjoying marvelous views of the stunning natural scenery along the way. In the evening, you’ll retire to your Sleeper Plus Class private cabin. Dinner is included onboard VIA Rail this evening.

Day 11 | Jasper: Begin your morning with a delightful includ-ed breakfast in the dining car as you pass between the stunning Monashee and Cariboo mountain ranges. Head to the domed car for the best views of Mt. Robson and Cariboo Falls. Overnight stay at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

Day 12 | Jasper | Banff: Travel through the famous Icefields Park-way, stopping at the Columbia Icefield for a glacier experience.
