Forage standHow to establish a Productive Forage StandThe establishment phase is the critical first step in a productive and healthy forage stand. To maximize your success, follow the agronomic guidelines below.
Time of seedingEarly spring (Including Frost Seeding) and early fall (before freeze-up) are suitable times for seeding your forage stand.
- Spring seeding provides the best chance for adequate moisture levels for germination.
- Early Spring, or late winter frost seeding, the freeze/thaw patterns help to work the seed in to the soil.
- Fall seeding provides less weed competition.
Seedbed preparationA firm seedbed is needed for good forage establishment. This results in proper seed-to-soil contact, adds control to seeding depth, and reduces surface drying. Walking on a firm seedbed should not leave a footprint deeper than ¼ inch.
Weed controlWeed control is important for good forage establishment. A seedbed free of perennial weeds is especially important. Control weeds prior to seeding, as well as during the year of establishment, if possible.
Quality seed and seed treatmentsCertified seed ensures varietal purity, high-germination and weed-free seed. Certified seed results in rapid establishment and reduced weed problems in the future forage crop, as well as subsequent crops. Consider a seed coating to improve flowability and seedling health. All legumes should be inoculated to ensure proper nitrogen fixation.
FertilitySoil test and fertilize accordingly. Remember that the most cost-effective time to fertilize a forage crop is usually at seeding. Consider the use of higher rates of phosphorus or elemental sulphur to provide a stable nutrition base for the following years. Fifteen pounds per acre of P2O5 can be safely seed placed. Higher rates must be banded away from the seed row to avoid seedling damage.

Forage standHow to establish a Productive Forage Stand (cont’d)
Seeding depthProper depth of seeding cannot be stressed enough. Many forage stand establishment failures are due to seeding too deep. All forage species should be seeded no deeper than ½ inch. Most forage seeds will do well planted at about ¼ inch or less. Always err on seeding shallow rather than deep.
Seeding ratesUse proper seeding rates based on target plants per square foot. Seeding rates depend on species, seed size, seed quality, seeding method, row spacing and annual precipitation. Because most forage seeds are small, light and often chaffy, it can be useful to mix the seed with cracked grain, cover crop seed, or use coated seed to improve seed flow.
Cover cropsAlthough not recommended, some producers choose to plant forages with cover crops such as barley or oats. Cover (or companion) crops compete with the new forage seedlings for sunlight, nutrients and moisture. A cover crop can cause reduced seedling establishment and forage yield and also reduce stand longevity. The benefits of using cover crops include reduction of wind and water erosion and reduction of weed infiltration. If using a cover crop, the following tips will reduce the competition and aid in forage stand establishment.
Tip #1Seed the cover crop at ⅓ to ½ of normal seeding rate.
Tip #2Seed forage seed in a separate pass at an angle to your cover crop to reduce competition and to aid in depth control.
Tip #3Increase forage seeding rate to achieve desired plant densities in the stand as the cover crop will reduce forage seed establishment.
Tip #4Remove the cover crop as early as possible (silage or greenfed) rather than harvesting the grain. This will reduce the amount of competition for sunlight, moisture and nutrients.
Tip #5If harvesting the cover crop for grain (not recommended), remove all straw from the field. If that is not an option, chop and spread the straw thoroughly across the field. If straw is left in a windrow, it will smother the forage seedlings underneath.
Tip #6If seeding forages where soil erosion is prominent, it is recommended that a cover crop be used. The companion crop will aid in covering and protecting the soil during the establishment year.

Protein content and palatability decrease rapidly with maturity. It is recommended to
use it in the form of silage or hay and to graze the regroth's
which are more flavourful.
Medium, little in the way of fall growth, very
resistant to drought, better yields in rich and
well-drained soil.

Plant breeder's rights New legislation creates opportunity for Canadian farmers
As of February 27, 2015, all new varieties submitted for Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) are protected under the new legislation. This update conforms to the UPOV 1991 convention, bringing Canada in line with the rest of the world and opening the door for increased investment to make new varieties available to Canadian farmers. Changes to the PBR Act create opportunity. But they also bring new obligations for the value chain.

Winter cereals 2021
• Exceptional yield• Very good winter survival• Very good standability
UGRC Ring is a winter wheat that has very high potential yield. It excels in all regions of Eastern Canada. It’s standability is excellent. It distinguishes itself under intensive management when fungicide is applied along with adequate nitrogen fertilizer.
• Excellent yield• Very good winter hardiness• Very good standability • Not very susceptible to ergot
KWS Daniello hybrid fall rye can be grown for grain, forage or biomass. It has a very high potential with an expected yield increase of 20-25% over tha of conventional fall rye. The yields from our trials were very high, around 8 to 9 tonnes/ha. It is shorter than Gauthier fall rye and has excellent standability. In addition, KWS Daniello fall rye is much more resistant to ergot than conventional ryes. A well-prepared seed bed and even germination will provide good resistance to ergot. It also has a higher falling number than the average for fall ryes.
