When Lars Karl Hjelle started it all in 1940, life along the elongated Norwegian coast was tough. Located between deep fjords and majestic mountains the farmers in the small village of Sykkylven started to build furniture in barns or cellars to ensure their own livelihood. They were everyday heroes. Lars Karl Hjelle was one of these pioneers, and the initial wish to provide more jobs led him to found LK Hjelle.

The essence of Hjelle is to always create beautiful, timeless Scandinavian pieces that will last for generations to come – both in form, quality and comfort. That is why we look closely after our precious heritage, work closely with great designers and make all our furniture at our own factory in Sykkylven, Norway. True craftsmanship runs in our blood. Our craftsmen and craftswomen still work with passion and pride. By continuing to focus on craftsmanship and premium materials

we ensure that our customers receive a supreme level of quality.

Our close cooperation with both Norwegian and international designers, has made Hjelle known for innovative furniture design. Many of our objects have received awards, and today some of them even stand out as design icons. They are products that will survive the passage of time.

Jonas Stokke wanted to create a sofa free of unnecessary concepts, but with proportions well worked through, a generous seating comfort, but without taking up all your space. He succeeded. Adding high quality, FRÍ is a sofa that will stay with you for a long time without you loosing interest. In Icelandic «frí» means «holiday», but although it can be said to be inspired by the rhythm of a holiday, FRÍ is made for the days that really count; every day.

NIU is inspired by a box that opens and gives you a glimpse of what lies hidden inside. The walls lean back and to the side, giving the sofa a dynamic character that is interesting from every angle. In Catalan «niu» means «nest», and that’s exactly what Hallgeir Homstvedt wanted to create; a zone shielded from the surrounding interior with high walls, an inside filled with soft cushions and a generous depth made to share. Back in 2006, Norway Says designed OK, and today OK stands as a perfect example of the designer trio’s ability to generate ideas and products that are way ahead of their time. OK is a simple module system which can create different sofa solutions, only using four different parts. The modules are easily assembled according to your needs and may be grouped in new ways, as required. An advanced foam structure provides a very high comfort and makes OK fit perfectly to your body.

An icon among classics

In 2003, Hjelle started collaborating with the Norwegian designer trio Norway Says. The first result of this successful collaboration was UGO. When first released, UGO was considered as the clearly contemporary design – now UGO stands out as an icon among classics. The UGO sofa was designed to look beautiful at every angle, even from behind. The result is a funky sitting landscape where three different module sizes can be combined in different ways and perfectly adapt to various spaces. The modules can be assembled, as required, into small sofa islands or larger groups.

HAL stands out by its straightforward lines and characteristic shape. MOLTO Flex is a sofa system that offers many creative options and solutions. MOLTO Flex is adapted to smaller, intimate meeting situations. To celebrate Siesta’s 50th anniversary, we launched SIESTA TRIO. SIESTA TRIO applauds the classic icon’s great correlation between design and function, but at the same time emphasises Siesta’s ability to stay unaffected by time. Fredrik A. Kayser foremost designs are characterised by a Danish inspired and Scandinavian tone. Among them is the armchair MODELL 711. Kayser designed the armchair in 1960, and the same year MODELL 711 won first prize in the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry chair competition. Despite having clear references to the mid-century design era, the chair stands out as a timeless piece. MODELL 711 is just as relevant today as it was when it was designed, and its Nordic aesthetic makes it easily adapt to modern architecture. MODELL 711 stands out as a Norwegian design icon that will lasts for years to come.

The more the merrierTWIN is a neat and elegant occasional table. As the name implies, TWIN has two separate but identical table tops. As quadruplets or in groups of many TWIN creates an inspiring and playful pattern. The more the merrier.

DAG HJELLE – As a third generation Hjelle, Dag is armed with precise

skills he learned while growing up and working every summer in the factory.

«Being part of this family business has taught me a lot about craftsmanship,

materials and techniques,» he says.

Dag is always working closely together with our retailers to find out what is

in demand and he has a great eye for proportions and details, with a great

focus on comfort. In 2000 he designed the ARENA sofa which since have

become one of our best sellers. In 2015 he designed his second sofa, FAM.

JONAS R. STOKKE believes design is a terrific tool to create value for

other human beings, and that there resides a responsibility when bringing

new objects and services into the world. How is this creating value, and for

whom? To Jonas that is a guiding principle. He is also fascinated by how

you can manipulate and combine different materials, and this new object

appears, which did not exist before.

Jonas Stokke holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from Brunel University,

and a Master of Product Design from The Oslo School of Architecture and

Design. He works with a variety of different products and services ranging

from furniture to tech startups, and has received numerous awards for his

work. During his master’s degree he was a founding partner of the influential

design duo StokkeAustad. Jonas is born and based in Oslo, Norway.

ANDERSSEN & VOLL was established in 2009. Torbjørn Anderssen and

Espen Voll became a part of the international design scene through Norway

Says, and today Anderssen & Voll is one of the leading design studios in

Scandinavia. Their creations are typically highly attentive to cultural and

market trends. They use this awareness to generate ground-breaking and

desirable products for their clients.

Both being previously named Norwegian and Scandinavian Designers of

the Year, they have also received international awards and recognition for

furniture work, lighting and home accessories; including Wallpaper Award, IF

Award and Honorary Award for Best Design in Norway.

HALLGEIR HOMSTVEDT completed his BA of Industrial Design with

Honours from Newcastle University in Australia. After completing his

studies in 2006, Homstvedt started to work for the prominent design

studio Norway Says.

In 2009, he opened his own design studio, and since then he has provided

furniture, product and industrial design and consultancy services to a wide

range of clients. Hallgeir Homstvedt’s work has been exhibited in London,

Tokyo, Oslo, New York and Milan, and he has received a number of design

awards over the last nine years.

FREDRIK A. KAYSER (1924-1968) graduated from the Norwegian National

College of Art & Design in 1945, Kayser worked at Rastad & Relling design

studio, but in 1956 he established his own studio. Many of his furniture

pieces are considered classics today, among them the armchair Modell

711, which in 1960 won first prize in the Industry Council for Furniture and

Furnishing Industry Chair competition.

INGMAR RELLING (1920-2002) started his career at Rastad & Relling

design studio in 1947 before establishing his own studio in Sykkylven in 1950.

Today, he is considered as one of the greatest contributors to the golden

era of Scandinavian Design. In 1965, Ingmar Relling designed his greatest

creation: the Siesta chair. It earned him first prize at the Industry Council for

Furniture and Furnishing Industry Chair competition the same year. Even the

White House was furnished with Ingmar Relling’s Siesta. Today, the Siesta

chair stands out as an internationally recognised classic and a Norwegian icon.

The young designer trio NORWAY SAYS managed to put Norway and Nordic

forms back on the international design map shortly after they started their

first collaboration in 1999. Norway Says won national and international

prizes for their work, including Torsten & Wanja Søderberg Award, the Bruno

Mathsson Award and the Wallpaper Award. The last mentioned was for

Hjelle’s sofa Ugo. After almost ten thriving years the three designers chose to

end the adventure Norway Says in 2009.

NIU has three basic modules; 1,5 seater, 2 seater and 3 seater. The modular system is highly flexible and allows you to build different corner and U-solutions, chaise lounges, daybeds and open-ended sofas. NIU is delivered with fixed seat and advanced foam structure for high comfort. The sofa has two back cushions per seat and one arm cushion per armrest.
