Choose from over 50 single degree programs across our seven academic colleges. Focus on a specific subject area or select a combination of subject areas to explore.

Single degrees generally take between three and four years of full-time study to complete, and allow you to focus on a structured discipline or experience a broad range of subjects.

If you have a career in mind and know what you want to study, choose a structured degree like a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or a Bachelor of Health Science.

If you want flexibility to study a range of subjects within a discipline, choose a degree like the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.

Want to focus your studies?

Shalini RajkumarMalaysiaBachelor of Finance/Bachelor of Economics

Having grown up in the multicultural pockets of Malaysia, where multiple languages are spoken, Shalini Rajkumar has always found various vernaculars to be alluring.

“In Malaysia, one would always be a part of many conversations if they knew multiple languages. It’s a simple asset that can take anyone a long way,” Shalini shares.

Apart from her fluency in Malay, English and Tamil, Shalini is also currently learning Mandarin at The Australian National University (ANU); along with her core courses at the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE). She is currently studying a Bachelor of Finance and a Bachelor of Economics double degree, and is the recipient of the ANU CBE International Undergraduate Scholarship.

She feels that all her interests have perfectly aligned.

“I had to choose electives and I thought of doing something outside the scope of my degree. That’s when I approached CBE Student Services with my dilemma. They helped me with the structure of my degree, and I thought why not Mandarin?” Shalini explained.

Her learning experience is not only building her academic and professional profile but also equally expanding her social network.

Delve into your interests while developing the systematic research skills needed for problem-solving, discovery and innovation.

U N D E R G R A D U A T E R E S E A R C H D E G R E E S

Undergraduate Research Degrees are challenging study programs that give you opportunities for intensive one-on-one guidance from world-leading academics, exclusive placements in research organisations, travel and teamwork.

> You will have the same full-time workload as a student studying a single undergraduate degree.

> You will graduate with skills that are in global demand across government, non-government and not-for-profit, business, consultancy and academic sectors.

Skills to get you aheadThe employment landscape is always changing, especially as technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and prevalent in the workplace.

Traditional jobs are disappearing or changing, while new jobs are emerging in response to contemporary needs.

By choosing to undertake an Undergraduate Research Degree you will develop timeless and highly transferable skills that work across disciplines. In particular, you will develop high-order problem-solving skills that employers are demanding the world over.

These skills will let you work in and across any industry which means that when you graduate, you will be uniquely placed to direct the course of your career.

Marika NiihoriCairns, AustraliaBachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) - Science

I study a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Science and it has been the best decision I have ever made in my life. Moving from Cairns to Canberra, and living off campus was a very daunting idea. However, through the non-residential college Griffin Hall and my small PhB cohort I have been able to make many friends which allowed me to transition smoothly into university life.

Through PhB I have already undertaken a research project in physics with leading researchers that has opened doors. My other major concern was whether I’d find the opportunities to balance out my studies with extracurricular activities. Never fear as ANU has over 180 clubs and societies! It’s rather hard not to get involved! I’ve had the opportunity to work in the team for the annual ANU Student Research Conference. I have been elected as the President of the ANU Music Society and am a SET4ANU orientation leader. Overall my experiences at ANU have been life changing and I cannot wait to see what opportunities lie ahead in the future."

Bachelor of Advanced Computing (Research and Development) (Honours)

A unique, interdisciplinary degree that will prepare you to be a future leader in the information and communications technology revolution.

You will learn advanced computing techniques and have the opportunity to complete a unique major, while developing exceptional professional skills in areas of entrepreneurship and management.

Bachelor of Engineering (Research and Development) (Honours)

For high-achieving students interested in becoming innovators and future leaders in engineering.

This degree program combines the fundamental engineering courses with the opportunity to be immersed in research groups covering mechatronics, solar energy, materials and manufacturing.

When you graduate, you will be equipped to solve some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Bachelor of Finance, Economics and Statistics (Honours)

An elite program that integrates the three disciplines so you can develop a deep understanding of these fields.

You will be guided by a mentor throughout your studies, and when you graduate you will be recognised for your exceptional aptitude for quantitative financial analysis, conceptual thinking about claims on resources using statistics, problem-solving combining economic intuition and mathematical techniques.

Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) / Bachelor of Science (Honours) (NUS)

The PhB(Hons)/BSc(Hons) can be taken in three majors (Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) and is offered as a joint single degree program by the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Colleges of Science at ANU.

This highly selective program provides a challenging course of study for students who have a strong interest in and aptitude for graduate research work.

Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) / Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (NUS)

Jointly offered with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the PhB is suitable for you if you are intellectually ambitious and have an interest in English, History, Political Science or Philosophy, and wish to complete a period of study in Singapore.

Bobby SunChinaBachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours)

“I always loved the water and the ocean. The only problem is I can’t swim!” And yet, Bobby Sun is about to graduate with a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours), specialising in marine science. “My Honours supervisor asked me if I wanted to do my research on One Tree Island”—a coral cay on the Southern Great Barrier Reef—“and I was so scared to tell him I couldn’t swim!”

After mustering the courage to confess that she was a land-dwelling marine scientist, Bobby’s supervisor told her not to worry: no swimming would be required. Bobby’s Honours fieldwork involves studying bio-mineral chemistry under the sea; but luckily, she can do this while standing in water about a foot deep, at low tide, on the reef flat.

Like most Honours students, Bobby has only scratched the surface when it comes to answering her question. So she has decided to get to the bottom of it via a PhD. “I’m so thrilled that I get the opportunity to continue researching what is happening on the reef and other parts of the ocean.”

Plan your degreeYou can tailor your studies to suit your interests or careers goals through your majors, minors and specialisations. You can also explore in-depth programs and research options with Honours degrees.

What’s a major?

A major is an area within a program that allows in-depth study in a particular field. A major usually consists of a set number of related courses. Majors at ANU require 48 units of study. Typically, each course is worth six units.

Then, what’s a minor?

As the name suggests, a minor has fewer requirements to fulfil than a major, in terms of points and compulsory courses. Minors at ANU require 24 units of study – so typically four courses.

And a specialisation?

Similar to a minor, a specialisation is an area of study with its own courses that are allowed to be taken in conjunction with a specific related major.

> For more information on majors, minors and specialisations go to programsandcourses.anu.edu.au

Honours Programs

In Honours programs, students usually undertake higher level coursework and carry out an independent research project under the guidance of a specialist academic supervisor. Each ANU College has different Honours programs.

Studying Honours can:

> provide an opportunity for more in-depth study of your chosen subject and refinement of your expertise in the field;

> enhance your research techniques and help you develop the skills to undertake a substantial research project;

> offer a pathway for students interested in going on to a PhD and an academic career;

> provide a competitive edge in the job market and be an aid to faster career progression.

Nu NguyenVietnamBachelor of International Security Studies

"I’m from Vietnam. I chose ANU because it’s one of the top universities in the world, on par with many top British and American universities. During my time in the Bachelor of International Security Studies, I’ve had my ups and downs, challenges and rewards. Every class’s robust and detailed discussion comes with rigorous self-research on topics. Every essay is the fruit of hard work and long hours of labour.

I’ve taken a minor in Historical International Security because I think they are essential for an international student like myself to become familiar with Western cultures and their progress of civilisation.

Without the study of history, it would be challenging to make sense of what’s happening today. In the future, I hope to work at a non-government organisation like the United Nations or ASEAN. These organisations are where I can apply the most of my knowledge and findings and actively contribute to peacekeeping."

ANU welcomes close to 3,000 international students each year. If you would like to be one of them in 2021, apply early for the best chance of success.

As an international student, you can apply directly to ANU, or use one of our international agents located around the world.

> ANU admits students twice a year, in Semester 1 and Semester 2.

> For each semester intake, there are up to three application rounds. Apply in the first round, and you may have three opportunities to be assessed and accepted for that semester, giving you the best chance of getting a place.

> You can only apply for one program, although you can change your preference during the application process.

> You need to meet pre-requisite, cognate and English language requirements for your program by the application deadline for the round, as we will not be issuing any conditional offers.

> You are ranked against other candidates applying for the same degree and places are limited.

The Application process

* We use your academic qualification or sequence of study to give you an ANU Selection Rank out of 99.95. Your ANU Selection Rank is used to determine if you meet the minimum requirements for your preferred ANU program.

† If you're completing an Australian Year 12, a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3, or an International Baccalaureate (IB), you need to apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Go to uac.edu.au for more information.

Find a degree and review requirements by visiting programsandcourses.anu.edu.au(Note: some ANU programs that have specific admission requirements may follow a different application and assessment process. For more information, visit anu.edu.au/study/apply and review page 18)

Take a Video TourGlimpse our world-class campus, diverse community and find out what our student residences look like – all of which are just minutes from the CBD. Check the ANU Accommodation Tour Videos on YouTube.

Cost of livingIn addition to accommodation costs, you will also have other costs to consider when moving out of home to study at university. It is a good idea to make a list of your expenses, for example: mobile phone and internet, textbooks and stationery, and transport and entertainment. Natali Heil KoerbelBrazilBachelor of International Relations/Bachelor of Commerce (International Business)

Three years ago I made the great decision of moving to Australia to study my undergraduate degree at the ANU. The opportunity to do a double degree in a high-quality institution instantly appealed to me because it allowed me to pursue different academic interests. The second best decision I made was to live on campus, at Burton and Garran Hall. Since day one my residential hall has given me all the support needed to adapt to a life in Canberra as an international student – from showing me where to get groceries to teaching me how to play footy. I have met incredible people from all over Australia and the world and created amazing memories with them.

All the pastoral care and academic support available at the ANU has helped me excel academically and grow as an individual. By being a Senior Resident last year and a Community Coordinator this year, I have noticed that I was not an exception and that numerous students benefit from all the support systems in place. Although it was not easy moving away from home to a foreign country, I am extremely grateful for the decisions that got me where I am today.

Gautham GopinathIndiaBachelor of Economics

The academic ranking of the ANU drew Gautham Gopinath to Canberra. Particularly the reviews he had read about the University’s College of Business and Economics (CBE).

Sherbaz HashmiBachelor of Software Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability

“I've always been very keen on trying new things,” Sherbaz Hashmi says, starting with his teenage years making “random apps”, and continuing now, with his “entrepreneurial spirit”.

In his third year of a Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability double degree, Sherbaz says his current career trajectory was shaped by an internship experience he completed as part of his science program.

“I did a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course at the Fenner School of Environment and Society and through that, my lecturer recommended me for an internship at Esri Australia, the market leaders in GIS technology and services.

The experience gave Sherbaz the training ground to decide what he wanted to do. “I went in there thinking that it would be completely GIS-based and I came out of there seeing that there's a whole world where you can integrate software engineering principles with GIS, and that's what interests me now. I wouldn't have figured that out unless I went through the internship. I can do something that will better the world, and also have the tools to do it.”

Get job-ready skills and contribute to something bigger than you. Take on some amazing internships here and overseas, some of which are exclusive to ANU.

Lilliana Cazabon-MitchellExchange: Waseda University, JapanBachelor of International Security Studies

Lilliana spent one semester experiencing the fast-paced rhythm of Tokyo, Japan.

"Though it was an academic exchange, I feel that the area in which I most benefited was personal. Increased responsibility and cultural and language differences forced me to be a better communicator, more independent and most importantly, more adaptable. Throughout my time abroad I noticed a substantial amount of change in myself feeling more capable of not only studying but functioning as a human being. This in turn has improved my relationship with myself, and has made me realise I can rely on myself."
