It’s been tough sledding for the Thief River Falls girls basketball team during an abbreviated 2021 season. The Prowlers have a young

and inexperienced squad with just three seniors on the varsity roster - Brooklyn Brouse, Sydney Reierson and Trista Spears.

Junior Olivia Hawkins and sophomores Kendal Rantanen, Brylee Lingen, and Maren Espe are the team’s most experienced players. Brouse, Reierson and Spears also saw varsity

time as juniors. Spears, Reierson, Brouse, Hawkins and Rantanen are captains. Junior Abby Flaagan and freshman Breanna Myers have stood out as well in their first varsity campaign.

The COVID-19 pandemic provided a series of chal-lenges for the Prowler girls basketball team – starting with wearing a face covering for both practice and games. “The biggest [challenge] at the beginning of the sea-son was playing in a mask,” second-year head coach Laura Fay said. “We defi-nitely had to take things slower when it came to con-ditioning and more frequent breaks. It still is a challenge to play with them on, but the girls are doing amazing with them.” Some drills have been altered to reduce the chance of spreading the virus dur-ing practice. “We limit drills that have a lot of contact and we keep our teams separate as much as possible,” Fay said. “We also haven’t used of our lock-er rooms like we have in the past. If the girls aren’t in school that day, they are to

come dressed for practice.” Locker rooms are also off limits during games. “The girls get ready and we will do a pregame talk spaced out but halftime we go to the hallway where we can spread out more,” Fay said. “It took a little to get used to not having fans close to you or having a student section at the games. I know that the girls wish we could have more fans and also be able to have the support of their peers sitting in the bleachers. The girls have done a great job with adjust-ing to everything they are going through with COVID. The Prowlers struggled out of the gate with losses to Hawley, Moorhead and Detroit Lakes, before win-ning back-to-back games against Warroad and Bagley, respecitvely. Since then, the Prowlers have played teams close for one half, either starting fast and fading or starting slow and finishing strong, but they haven’t been able to record a win in their last eight games as of March 2. Fay likes the way her team works together and looks for ways to improve. “We have had a tough sea-son so far and it hasn’t gone the way we hoped it would, but these girls show up every day to work on their game,” Fay said. “We are working on limiting our turnovers and communicat-ing better on the court. We do have a young team and with that comes learning new roles and also learning to be coachable. We are working and will continue to work on improving skills at all levels, continue to improve throughout the sea-son and advance in tourna-ment play.” Hawley and Crookston are early section favorites in the north half of Section 8AA. Hawley defeated Thief River Falls 65-29 on opening night at the Brickhouse. Crookston is 10-3 and sched-uled to play Thief River Falls twice in the final two weeks of the season. Fergus Falls (9-3) is currently ranked eighth in the state and the likely front runner in the south half of Section 8AA.

The Thief River Falls boys basketball team contin-ues to make progress under third year head coach Jon Hamms. The Prowlers went 10-17 including a first round sec-tion playoff exit under Hams in 2018-19 and improved to 13-14 including a 1-1 playoff record in 2019-20. This year’s team won five of its first eight games before a positive COVID-19 test shut all team activities down. “We got to start back on Saturday (Feb. 20) after 16 days off,” Hams said. “We

try to get our grouping smaller and mix groups less than we normally would. We probably will be changing our travel routine to try and protect our players as much as possible for the rest of the season.” The school district has transitioned from a hybrid learning model to full dis-tance learning and back to hybrid over the course of the school year. Things are far from normal, but the Prowler boys basketball team is thankful to have a season. “Despite the strange cir-

cumstances everybody keeps their head up and com-petes,” Hams said. “This is one of the most competitive teams I have coached. They are constantly asking, ‘What can I do differently?’ and helping each other.” Senior captain and four-year starter Brevyn Lingen is the Prowlers’ most experi-enced player. Sophomore Jack Manning also played big minutes as a freshman and has taken the next step with several double-doubles so far this year. Junior Brady Olson saw good spot minutes during his sopho-

more season and has stepped into the Prowlers’ starting lineup. Juniors Jack Onkka and Dylan Hahn, and sophomore Jack Rosendahl have also stepped up and are playing big minutes for the Prowlers. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Warroad have emereged as the teams to beat in the north half of Section 8AA, with the southern half of the section featuring Pelican Rapids, and the two teams that were set to play for last year’s section title – Perham and Fergus Falls.

Girls hockey team looks for breakthrough season On Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, Thief River Falls defeated Warroad 3-1 to claim the Section 8A Girls Hockey championship. It remains the Prowlers’ only section championship in the sport. The following season, the Prowlers and Warriors split their season series with the Prowlers claiming a 2-1 win on the Ralph Engelstad Arena ice. It remains the last win in the series for

Thief River Falls. Warroad went on to claim the next five Section 8A titles and, including play-offs, the Warriors have won 12 straight games over the Prowlers. This year, the Prowlers look to advance to their third consecutive section champi-onship. If they accomplish that goal, their likely foe is the returning five-time sec-tion champs. Warroad is 10-1-0 and

ranked number two in the latest Let’s Play Hockey coaches poll, while the Prowlers’ slot in at number 15 with a 5-4-1 mark. “We want to get back to the section final and get over the hurdle that has stopped us short from our goal the last two years,” said Thief River Falls Head Coach Brett Johnson. The girls hockey team also seeks 1 percent improvement each day.

“Continue to improve and get better everyday,” Johnson said. Like every other team in the district, the Prowler Girls Hockey team has revamped its practice and competition routine during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Everyday the girls have to answer a COVID form on Google Classroom, then before they enter the locker room they have to get their temperature taken,”

Johnson noted. “For our actual on ice practice, it was a little bit of an adjustment for them to get used to the mask, but it’s fine now. As far as coaches, we do our best to keep our distance.” Seniors Gabriella Steele, goaltender, Shelby Breiland, forward and Haylie Rogalla, forward; juniors Jenae Johnson, forward, Bella Amiot, forward, and Daniella Niebuhr, defense-man; and sophomore Jayden Breiland, defenseman, are experienced players who back from last year’s squad. Steele, Shelby Breiland and Amiot are captains of this year’s team. Steele has started all 10 games in the net for the Prowlers. She has one shutout on the season and has 298 saves on 329 oppo-nent shots on goal for a .906 save percentage. Through the first 10 games, Shelby Breiland is the team’s top scorer with 18 points. She also leads the team in goals, with 11, is second on the team in assists with seven, and leads the team in scoring percentage, converting 11 of her 22 shots

on goal into goals so far this year. Johnson leads the team in assists with nine, and is sec-ond on the team in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore forward Gretchen Cota and eigth grade forward Kali Knutson have both made an impact as varsity newcomers. Cota is second on the team with three goals on the season, followed by Johnson and Jayden Breiland with two goals each, and Knutson and Niebuhr with a goal a piece. Carli Prickett is number three on the team in assists behind Johnson and Shelby Breiland. Cota, Steele, Amiot and Breanna Lee each have one assist. Describing his team’s strenghts, Johnson noted: “Gabriella in the net - does a solid job,” Johnson said “Forwards – blocking shots, getting pucks to the net – we play a small num-ber of girls each night and their ability to buy into the systems we are teaching and working hard to compete at a high level.”

PROWLER WRESTLING

After falling in the Section 8AA semifinals for eight consecutive years, the 2020 Thief River Falls wrestling team broke through and reached the section championship match with a 38-32 win over top-seeded Perham Yellowjackets. The Prowlers’ bid for a section champi-onship came up short in a 38-30 loss to the Detroit Lakes Lakers, but it gave the team added resolve for this season. This year, the Prowlers are in the thick of a section race that also includes defending champion Detroit Lakes, Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and pere-nial section power Perham. Detroit Lakes began the season as the odds-on favorite with a number three ranking in Class AA – which

is the same spot the Lakers finished in last year’s state tournament – while the Prowlers began the season ranked ninth. The Prowlers faltered early in the section schedule, with a tiebreaker loss to the Perham Yellowjackets (36-36) and a lopsided 51-25 loss to Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew. A week after losing to the Road Crew, the Prowlers avenged the section champi-onship loss to the Lakers with a 39-34 win to re-insert themselves in the section conversation. A few weeks after defeat-ing the Lakers, the Prowlers avenged their loss to the Road Crew, 37-29, and knocked off another section contender in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, 38-30. The Prowlers’ success comes in spite of the fact

that the team lost three var-sity regulars to graduation from the 2020 squad – Jake Davis, Cole Johnson and Aaron Bruggeman. Davis was a three-time state qual-ifier, placing sixth at 145 last year, and Johnson was a two-time state qualifier. The team also saw most of its light weights from the 2020 team grow into the middle weights, creating a perceived hole of inexperi-ence in the first four weights. That perceived weakness is no logner a fac-tor due to the team’s improvement. Thief River Falls Head Coach Kenny Geiser attrib-utes the team’s improve-ment throughout the season to a pod system that was originally created to help the team compete during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team is effecitvely

divided into three pods – middle school/lightweights, middle weights and upper weights. Each pod practices at a different site, they stay in their pods for travel and even sit on the team bench according to their pod. “Guys are getting more quality coaching and more individual help this year,” Geiser said. “COVID has been bad, a terrible thing in many ways, but it has helped those guys get better. We may take the good parts of this going forward. “At the beginning of the year, our lower weights and our upper weights were per-ceived weaknesses. They've both risen up and made this team solid all the way through.” Coaches also stick with a certain pod. This year, Mark Davis, Dale Rystad and Jake Davis are coaching the mid-

dle school and lightweight varsity/JV wrestlers; Andrew Youngblom, Kevin Fynboh, Brian Kasprick and Josh Bernier are coaching the middle weights; and Geiser, Scott DCamp and Ben Poissant are coaching the upperweights. The team also added Tyler Hennings as strength coordinator. Individually, the Prowlers are led by five returning state qualifiers. Sophomore Kale Geiser, 132 pounds, was a state qualifer at 106 pounds in 2020. Freshman Griffin Lundeen, 138, was a state qualifier at 126 last year. Junior Brady Kasprick, 145, was a state qualifer at 138 last year. Junior Cody Wienen, 152, was a state qualifer at 132 last year; and senior Mason Iverson, 195, was a state qualifier at 195 last year. Also returning from last

The 2021 season did not get off to a great start for the Thief River Falls boys hock-ey team. The Prowlers fell to defending section champion Warroad on opening night by a 7-1 margin, before drop-ping close games to Little Falls, ranked third in Class A, and Roseau, ranked 18th in Class AA. The Prowlers regrouped under the leadership of Tim Bergland, who is in his 14th season as head coach, and tied Kittson Central before winning seven of the next nine games. The 2021 Prowler boys hockey team features 12 seniors: Ethan Lunsetter, Gannon Kempert, Blake Biermaier, Kaden Bakken, Tylan Johnson, Zachary Dalzell, Wayde Jensen, Joshua Berzinski, Alexander Lundgren, Kyler Hoverson, Dalton Philipp and Samuel

Dyrud. Johnson, Bakken and Biermaier are team cap-tains. “Ty Johnson's leadership qualities are ‘lead by exam-ple kid,’” said Head Coach Tim Bergland. “He works his butt off on and off the ice and has just a great atti-tude. Kayden is another one whose engine is always going. He is intense during games and is an energy guy for us. Blake has a lot of the same qualities, but he is a bit more vocal than the other two. Between the three of them, it is a good mix.” Top returners from the 2019-20 team include for-ward Biermaier with 22 points (8 goals, 14 assists), Bakken with 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists), Brendan Bottem with 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists), Dalzell with 13 points (6 goals, 7

assists), Isaiah Villarreal with six points (2 goals, 4 assists), Johnson with four points (2 goals, 2 assists), Jaxon Brouse with three points (3 assists), Justin Funk with three points (3 assists), and Kempert with two points (2 assists). Through 13 games, Dalzell, Brouse, Bottem and Biermaier lead the team in goals scored with Dalzell at 9, Brouse at 7, and Bottem and Biermaier at 6, respec-tively. Bottem leads the team in assists with 14. Biermaier and Villarreal are tied for second on the team with nine assists each, while Dalzell and Bakken have each been credited with eight assists through 13 games. “We have had a number of players that have improved a lot from last year,”

Bergland said. “I think the biggest, however, would probably be Brendan Bottem. His work ethic all year round is next level, and he is starting to reap the benefits now.” Bergland has also been impressed with varsity new-comer Tysen Loeffler. The sophomore forward has scored five goals and three assists in just nine varsity games. “Tyson Loeffler has been making the biggest impact as a first year player,” Bergland said. “He has very, very high hockey skills and also a great mind for the game.” Among the departures from last year’s team were seniors Evan Bushy, Grant Hartmann, Will Johnson, Ayden Leake, Brockston Masseth, Tucker Skime and Noah Rupprecht. Rupprecht

was a two-year starting goaltender who allowed less than two goals per game over 47 career varsity starts. The Prowlers have two goalies sharing time in the net this season. In four starts, senior Josh Berzinski has posted a 3-1 record, allowing 13 goals on 114 shots (.886 save percentage). In nine starts, junior Brett Holmer is 4-4, allowing 23 goals on 247 shots (.907 save) perecentage. Like all other teams, the Prowler Boys Hockey Team has been forced to adjust its routine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think the locker room set up has probably been the biggest change during Covid,” Bergland said. “Normally we have more kids in the locker room. Boys hang out there a lot more do a lot more things as a group.

But we're very fortunate to have the season that we've had so far.” The Prowlers are in the home stretch with rematch-es against section opponents Warroad and East Grand Forks. Warroad remains the section front runner at 7-4-2 overall, with East Grand Forks in the second spot at 7-7-0. The Green Wave defeated the Prowlers 3-1 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on Feb. 9. “Of course I want to say we are the team to beat every year. Right now Warroad and East Grand Forks are teams we have not beaten,” Bergland said. “They would be the teams to beat at this point to point. It seems to be a very close race with them and we get to play them both still in the regular season. It will be a good sec-tion.”

Prowler swimmers answer challenge after facing elimination Paul “Fritz” Koppenhaver and Gerrit Bjornstad are the lone seniors on a young Thief River Falls Boys Swimming squad that wrapped up its abbreviated regular season the way it began – with a dual meet win over Detroit Lakes. Koppenhaver, Drew Casavan, and Richard Philipp are team captains for the young squad that has had to battle both in and out of the pool after learning that the boys swimming pro-gram could be cut due to a district-wide budget short-fall. “When the boys found out the swim team may be cut, they were given the option of going home that day to be with their family or stay at practice and do a sprint

workout,” said Thief River Falls Boys Swimming Head Coach Danielle Spiten. “They unanimously chose to swim hard. I have been so proud of the way they have composed themselves during all of this. They have been working really hard at prac-tice, focusing on helping one another, and speaking out to their community about how important the program is to them. Their attitudes have been admirable and it is because of their inspiring and vulnerable speeches at the school board meeting that the community has backed them. I feel so blessed to coach them.” Koppenhaver has stood out in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay

races with multiple wins. Gavin Smith is a threat to win the 200 IM and 100 freestyle each time he dives into the pool and he is also part of the 200 and 400 yard A Relay teams. Casavan has won both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while swimming with Koppenhaver and Smith on the 200 and 400 freestyle teams. “Paul, Gavin [Smith], and Drew have all done really well so far this season,” said Spiten. “It was a short, and unique, season for them. They stepped up as leaders when we found out we would have to fight to ever have another season again. Competitively they make up the backbone of two of our relays, the 200 free relay,

and the 400 free relay. Fritz has been working really hard to make the most of his season year and finish his final season with personal best times.” The fourth member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, Andy Dagg, also pushes Koppenhaver in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. “Andy has also been drop-ping time in the 50 and 100 freestyle this year,” Spiten said. “They have been push-ing each other, and we are excited to see what they are both going to do in sections this year.” Spiten said Koppenhaver is the hardest worker on the team and the boys look to him for leadership by exam-ple while trying to push through a difficult workout.

“He's always doing his best and never complains, no matter how hard the set is,” Spiten said. “On top of it all, he is one of the kindest peo-ple I have ever coached.” Casavan also leads by example both in and out of the pool. “Drew always has a fire lit under him and is ready for a challenge,” Spiten said. “He took the potential cut-ting of our team in stride and immediately asked, ‘OK, so what are we going to do to fight this?’ That's just the type of kid he is. He kept the boys motivated these past weeks.” “Richard is a new captain this year and he has been working hard on developing his leadership skills,” Spiten said. “He is really great with

our younger swimmers and works to help them feel included.” Much like the girls season in fall 2020, the Section 8A meet will be held at several sites with times posted. “Sections are going to be really strange this year, so we are focusing on Bemidji and Park Rapids since that is who we will be swimming against,” Spiten said. “Perham may be at our loca-tion as well. We have Fritz, Drew, and Gavin who all have a shot at placing top 16 at sections. For Fritz and Drew, they may even have a chance at top 8 if they taper well and are able to have the best swims they've ever had.”
