National School of Arts Unit Listing 2022 (Information last updated on 20 September 2021) Students must ensure that they select discipline areas that are approved for their course, as not all disciplines can be taken in every course and some are available only on certain campuses. This information is listed under each discipline, but please consult your course rules or CEG for information on your degree.
• A major is a total of 80 credit points (cp) in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level, at least 40cp at 200-level and at least 20cp from 300-level.
• A minor is a total of 40cp from prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10cp at introductory level and at least 20cp at advanced level.
• An elective is an individual unit undertaken apart than those units required for your selected majors or minors. You should consult your course rules or CEG to see what units are available for your degree. Generally, for degrees in the National School of Arts an elective may be any unit from the National School of Arts list for which you have the pre-requisite. Global Studies degrees have their own list of approved units.
• A unit identified as a cross-listed unit may only be used in one major or minor or as an elective. You may not count the unit in different disciplines. (For example, HUMA250 is listed as a Drama unit or a History unit. You need to determine whether you want it to count as Drama or History as you may not count it as part of two sequences.
The lists that follow provide information on the units offered on the different campuses (or online) in 2022. There may be other units available in your chosen discipline that do not appear in this list because they are not on offer in 2022. To view the complete structure of your discipline, please refer to the Course Rules sequences for your course or for the Bachelor of Arts. Accelerated BA: Students following the accelerated program map for the Bachelor of Arts need to take units in summer and winter terms. While the map places Arts electives in summer and UNCC units and community engagement in winter, students may change the placement of those units taken if they are taking a winter unit available in this unit list or applying for an overseas winter intensive unit in the year ahead. Summer and Winter units: Arts units available to all students in summer and winter 2021-2022 are Summer: HIST260, and HUMA330 and Winter: HIST261.
Community engagement units available in 2022 in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Creative Arts and Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Global Studies are listed after the discipline sequence lists. Program Core units: Students who started their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Creative Arts degrees prior to 2019 will need to include at least two Program core units in their course. The Program core units on offer in 2022 are listed at the end of this document.
How to use this document Use the table of contents to locate your discipline and check which units are on offer in 2022 either on your campus or as national online units. Some areas have specified units that are required for the discipline – these will also be listed with the information on the discipline pages. Check the instructions at the top of each discipline to ensure that you meet any specific requirements for your course. First-year students, in their first semester, should enrol in 100-level units, that is, those units whose code has a number in the range 100–199.
Prerequisites: All students should check that they have the prerequisites for the units they have chosen before enrolling in them. Students who wish to request that the prerequisite requirement for a unit they would like to enrol in be waived may submit the Prerequisite Waiver Form (PRQ). In some cases, the rules for students taking teaching degrees are different to those for students completing the Bachelor of Arts, and these rules are also indicated on the appropriate page.

BUSINESS STUDIES Important information for all Business Studies students Business Studies is offered as a major or minor on the Blacktown, Brisbane, Melbourne and Strathfield campuses. Students on the Strathfield or Blacktown campuses may need to go to North Sydney to undertake some subjects. NOTE that the maximum number of 100-level units you can study in the major or minor is two. The minor requires you to have at least two units at 200/300-level, so you cannot study a mixture of all first-year units. The major requires you to have at least 6 units at 200/300-level with at least 2 of those at 300-level. In order to achieve this, you may need to choose your units from two of the sub-disciplines (Accounting, Marketing, Management or HR Management) so that you will have the prerequisites for third year units. (Consult your course coordinator if you have any concerns.) Available
• Bachelor of Arts and dual degrees with Arts including Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Global Studies, Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Psychological Science/Bachelor of Arts (May not be taken in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Commerce). (major or minor)
• Students studying a secondary teaching degree (major or minor) • Bachelor of Psychological Science (minor only) and Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) • Bachelor of Visual Art and Design (minor only)
Special rules for students completing a secondary teaching degree The different states have different requirements for teaching in the area of Business Studies. BRISBANE: Business Studies is available as a minor or major in Brisbane in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts. It is available as a first or second teaching area in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) or (Bachelor of Education (Special Education and Secondary). The Business Studies minor is available in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Exercise Science. Students taking Business Studies as a minor should include BUSN113 Managing people and organisations (previously MGMT100) in their units. They also need at least 2 units at 200-level. Students studying the major should do 4 units of Management/HR Management and 4 units of either Accounting or Marketing and make sure that they have at most 2 units at 100-level and at least 2 at 300-level. STRATHFIELD: Students who would like to qualify to teach both Business Studies and Economics undertake 4 units of Economics and then extend that sequence with BUSN113 Managing people and organisations (previously MGMT100) and BUSN104 Money Matters. See Economics for units available and consult your course coordinator if necessary. MELBOURNE: Business Studies is available as a major in the Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities). It is available as a First Teaching Area in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary and the Bachelor of Education (Special Education and Secondary) but must include 2 extension units to get the 8 units required as described below.) Students studying the major should do 4 units of Management/HR Management and 4 units of either Accounting, Marketing or Economics and make sure that they have at most 2 units at 100-level and at least 2 units at 300-level. ARTS SCHOLARS PROGRAM UNIT What is the Scholars Unit? Challenging and nurturing high-achieving students in the humanities is a key strategy for ensuring the production of excellent scholars and researchers of the future. HUMA251 Shaping Humanity: Ideas, Power and Scholarship is a dynamic unit for students who excelled in the first year of their Arts degree (or double degree with the BA). It provides students with the opportunity to join a select group of peers and academic experts in exploring some of the most significant contemporary questions in the social sciences and humanities. Each week, students will focus on a question having a seismic impact on the world of ideas. This unit considers the different ways in which scholars and thinkers from the Humanities, Social Sciences and Creative Arts disciplines are trying to answer these questions; the sorts of research methods they are using to do so; and the major works written about them. This unit is offered in semester 2 each year. To enquire about or apply for this unit please contact [email protected].
