Home Learning Project Week Beginning 01.06.2020Dear Parent and carer,Please see the information below for activities your child needs to do at home during the current school closure. We will ask the children to bring their work into school when we reopen so that we can celebrate their learning. Please remember to visit your child’s class blog page for links to the recommended websites.

Maths Writing Topic Reading

Day 1 Daily: Practise 2,5 and 10 times table. You can also practise your times tables by using Times Tables Rock Stars.

Lesson 1: I can learn how to write multiplication sentences using the multiplication symbol (x) and how it relates to repeated addition.

Use the link below and watch the video about repeated addition and multiplication.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhchscw

You can then use this link below to complete a White Rose activity sheet:https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zddybdm/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from

Day 1: I can understand what an adjective is and write examples of this.

An adjective is a word that describes a noun (the name of a thing or a place). ... You can put adjectives in different places in your sentences to make your writing more interesting.

If you would like to find out more about adjectives please see the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrqqtfr/articles/zy2r6yc

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-4876-adjectives-powerpoint?sign_in=1

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-par-178-ks1-amazing-adjectives-powerpoint

Day 1: I can say what I would like to know about the topic.

Our new Topic is called ‘Nature Detectives’ and is all about insects, mini-beasts, habitats and food chains.

Can you write two – three sentences about what you already know about insects, habitats or food chains. After you have done this, think of some things you would like to find out during this topic and write them down. Think of some questions you might want to ask and record them.

Day 1: I can use inference to answer questions.

Listen to (Miss Williams telling the story or there’s a link for YouTube) or read the story ‘Room on the Broom’ and answer the questions. We will be focusing on this book for the week.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRany_OScmsAnswer these questions (before you read the book again) based on the front cover:

1. What do notice about the title? Can you think of any more words that rhyme with ‘room’ and ‘broom’.

2. Look at the front cover. What words would you use to describe the witch?

3. What do you think the cauldron is for?

Page 2: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzhchscw&intlink_ts=1589785824800-sa

You could also:

Write out some multiplication sentences or equal group sentences for example:

There are 3 equal groups of 5 bananas or 3 x 5.

Once you have written some of these have a go at writing them as repeated addition sentences e.g. 5 + 5 + 5.

Then have a go at completing the Karate Cats multiplication game.

Can you think of a maths story where you can include your multiplication or repeated addition sentences. If you write one that includes a multiplication sentence, have a go at writing the repeated addition underneath for each one.

You are going to create your own word bank of adjectives. Try to think of as many different ones as you can. You could create this as a poster, mind map or however else you might want to.

You are now going to look at your adjectives and see if you can make them any better. Could they be more interesting?

You can now use your adjectives to write some descriptive sentences for example, if you had the adjective ‘massive’, you could write ‘There was a massive green tree’.

Please see the links below if you would like to download some extra adjective worksheets:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-52577-adjectives-activity-sheet-resource-pack

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/halloween-adjective-complete-the-sentences-differentiated-activity-sheets-us-l-261

Create your own title page for this topic. Make sure the title is ‘Nature Detectives’.

Now listen/read the book again.Think of at least 4 words to describe the witch.

Now pick two of the words you chose and write a sentence explaining why. E.g. I think the witch is kind becauselet the animals on her broomstick.

Page 3: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

Day 2 Daily: Practise 2,5 and 10 times tableLesson 2: I can use and describe arrays.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrf8jhv

Today you are going to look at how to use an array to see the commutativity of multiplication facts.

You can then watch the video to look at how you can use arrays to multiply by putting them into equal rows.

An array is a way of representing

multiplication facts in a diagram or

picture. It is always rectangular and

made up of rows and columns.

An array is helpful for calculating

multiplication statements, for

example, 2 x 4which can be shown

using this array:

There are 2 rows of apples

and 4 apples in each row.

There are 4 columns of apples

and 2 apples in each column.

Day 2: I can draw and label my own character.

This week you are going to write your own character description.

The first thing you need to do is think of the character you are going to describe. You might want to create your own or choose a character from a story.

Once you have decided on your character you can then draw them. Make sure you colour them in to make them look as much like the character as you can.

When you have finished drawing your character you will then label it. You can label it with key words and also some adjectives e.g. long blonde shiny hair.

Please see the links below if you would like to download some extra resources to help you create and label your character.

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-852-design-a-character-writing-

Day 2: I can explore and compare the differences between living and non-living.

Think about: What is a living thing? What does a living thing need to survive?

Dead things include: dead animals, dead plants and parts of plants or animals that are no longer attached e.g. leaves and twigs, shells, fur, hair and feathers. An object made from wood is classed as dead.

Objects made from plastic, rock, metal have never been alive.

Animals and plants live in a habitat to which they are suited which means that animals have suitable features that help them move and find food and plants have suitable features that help them to grow well.https://toybox.tools.bbc.co.uk/activities/id/gggz3sdq6f/exitGameUrl/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Ftopics%2Fz6882hv%2Farticles%2Fzs73r82/palette/colour-palette-7/language/en-GB/project/blocks-bitesize

Day 2: I can answer questions about what I have read.

1. What made the witch wail and the cat spit?

2. Which item did the dog fetch for the witch?

3. Why do you think each animal dropped the objects ‘politely’?

4. What made the broomstick snap in two?

5. How did the witch feel when the dragon appeared and why?

6. The dragon saw a ‘horrible beast’ what was it?

7. Do you think the witch preferred being on her own or having friends with her? Why?

8. Can you remember the spell that the witch said?

Page 4: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

This array shows the multiplication

statements 2 x 4 and 4 x 2.

The array has 8 apples in total. This

tells us that 2 x 4 and 4 x 2 are

both equal to 8.

2 x 4 = 8 and 4 x 2 = 8

Remember:

Multiplication is commutative.

4 x 3 is the same amount as 3 x 4.

4 lots of 3 is the same amount

as 3 lots of 4.

You could also:Try and create your own arrays by using different items like lego or pasta but you could also draw them. Make sure you say/write the multiplication sentence for each array.

Complete this activity:Can you draw an array to show 3 x 4?What other multiplication fact

frames

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-5250-character-adjective-word-mat

You can also find lots of character description sorting activities on Twinkl if you wanted to have a go at some interactive resources.

Activity: Find a range of items outside that are living, dead, or never lived, collect them and sort into categories.

Page 5: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

does it show?Does it help you calculate 4 x 3?

After you have done that, try to complete the interactive activity for arrays on the website.

Have a go at completing the worksheet below:

https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/z49pf4j/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzrf8jhv&intlink_ts=1589885783421-sa

Draw the arrays to match each multiplication sentence:

6 x 3 1 x 5

2 x 4 5 x 1

3 x 6 4 x 2

Asha is describing an array to her friend. Asha says her array has 18 counters. What multiplication might Asha be solving? Give 3 examples.

Page 6: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

You can also have a go at the ‘Karate Cats’ multiplication game.

You could also create your own match the array to the multiplication sentence and draw a line to each correct one.

Finally, you could create some multiplication sentence flashcards and when you choose one, you have to make that array.

Day 3 Daily: Practise 2,5 and 10 times tableLesson 3: I can recall my 2 times tables.https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z7hdqp3

You can then watch the KS1 video and learn a song all about the 2 times tables.

You could also:Look online for any other times tables songs you might want to learn to help you.

Here is a counting pattern:2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, …

Day 3: I can plan a character description.

You have now drawn and labelled your character and this is going to very useful when planning and writing your character description.

Today you are going to plan your character description. You can plan this however you would like to but please see some suggestions below:

You could split your page into different boxes e.g. appearance, personality and then fill the boxes with key words and adjectives. You may want to have a box for different things you will describe e.g. a box for hair, a box for their face, a

Day 3: I can explore and compare the differences between living and non-living.

Now you have found some things that were living, non-living and dead create a table and put them into the table.See below:

Non - living

Dead Living

Pebble twig spider

Can you add these onto your table (some you might have already in your table):

Day 3: I can create my own potion and spell.

Can you think about what things you would put in your cauldron if you were the witch? Can you come up with a new rhyme to say when you stir the things together?

Activity: Draw a cauldron and inside either draw or write the objects you would put in it. You can write your spell around your cauldron! The spell the witch muttered was ‘ Iggety, ziggety, zaggety, ZOOM’

Page 7: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

This pattern goes up in twos.

From each number, we add 2 to get the next number.

Can you count on in twos to get to 24?

Groups of 2:

This array has 2 apples in each column.

There are 4 columns, making 4 lots of 2.

Have a go at working out how many 2p coins you would need to make 18p.

Write out the repeated addition sentence and the multiplication sentences for this.Top tip to remember:Every number in the 2 times table is an even number. Even numbers always end in 0,2,4,6 or 8.

Have a go at drawing an array for each multiplication fact in the 2 times table. You might want to write out the 2 times table first to help you.

What do you notice about the arrays you have drawn?

How are they the same? How are they different?Once you have done this try to complete 2 x table interactive activity. See how many you can get right. If you get any wrong try and have another try.Once you have done all this you can practise recalling the 2 x table as quick as you can and also

Day 4: I can write a character description.

Today you are going to use everything you have done this week to help you write a character description.

You will use your plan to help you now write your character description. You could write your character description in sentences and paragraphs. You might want to write a paragraph describing your characters appearance and a paragraph about your character’s personality.

You may want to write your character description as a wanted or missing poster.

You could also use the template below:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-53913-character-profile-writing-template

Please use the resources below to help you and make sure you use

Day 4: I can identify and name a variety of animals and plants in their habitats, including micro-habitats.

Choose an animal, insect, mini-beast that you are familiar with.

Here are some ideas below:

Day 4: I can write an extra section for the story.

Write an extra section for the story. Maybe the cauldron blows away. Where might it go? What animal might find it? Can you use the rhyming pattern that Julia Donaldson uses in the story to extend the story in this way?

Use the template below to help you.

Please use the link below to answer a variety of questions or see the questions below.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z7txhbk

1. Jane is standing in a queue.

There are 5 people in front

of her. There are 2 people

behind her. How many

people are in the queue?

3. Rosie has 80 pence and

Mo has 12 pence.

Rosie gives Mo 25

pence. How much

more money does

Rosie have than Mo

now?

4. Using your knowledge

of the 2, 5 and 10

times table write out

Day 5: I can edit my character description.

You should have now finished writing your character description. If you haven’t then please carry on writing that so you can edit it.

When you have finished writing your character description please have a go at editing by doing these:

Check your spellings.Check that you have used capital letters and full stops correctly.Have you got a variety of adjectives? Are your adjectives exciting? See if you can make them more exciting by using a thesaurus (this can be done online).

You could use some of the links below to help you edit and check your character description:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-526804-ks1-editing-station-display-pack

Day 5: I can identify different habitats. There are three main habitats:Terrestrial, marine and freshwater.

Terrestrial - forests, grasslands, deserts and rainforests

Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams

Marine - seas and oceansActivity: Look at the different habitats and sort

Day 5: I can complete activities linked to the book.

Look at both activities. Pick one to do or both.

Activity 1: Write a new adventure for the witch and the animals now they have a new broom.

Can you think of a new place the witch and animals would like to go? Who else they might meet?

Activity 2: Make your own broomstick.

Page 13: 2024.rushymeadow.education  · Web view2020-06-01 · Fresh Water - bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Marine - seas and oceans. Activity: Look at the different habitats and

and answer some

missing number

sequences e.g.

5. How many 5ps would

make 50p altogether?

6. How many 10ps would

you need to make £1?

7. Ben has 5 marbles and

his brother has 6 times

that number. How

many marbles does his

brother have?

Once you have completed the questions can you write some problem solving questions of your own? Can you use all 4 different operations? Can you write some questions involving multiplying and dividing. You could also think about creating your own maths story e.g. Miss Punter had 6 buckets with 4 shells in each. She puts 1 more shell in each bucket. How many shells does she have now?

Miss Williams baked 25 cakes and
