Often referred to as “The Sunshine City”, St Petersburg has an average of 361
days of sunshine each year and boasts the Guiness World Record for logging
768 consecutive days with sun. Drawn by the terrific weather and the city’s
growing amenities the St. Petersburg area receives over 6.1 million annual
visitors of which 89% visit as vacationers. Tourists provide over $9.25 billion in
economic impact to the area annually.
Total Visitors Annually 6,197,500
Average Length of Stay 5.6 days
Average Party Size 2.7
Total Annual Visitor Spending $4.65 billion
Total Annual Economic Impact $9.25 billion
Once viewed as a popular retirement destination, due to its good weather and
low cost of living, the city is now shifting towards a millennial population. St.
Petersburg saw a 6% increase in this demographic between 2010 and 2015.
The influx in youth has both attracted and further bolstered St. Petersburg’s art
scene, craft movement, and live-work-play environment.
The St. Petersburg area has issued over $1.3 Billion in new
construction permits in the past four years. In the same time period,
there have been 3,000 residential units delivered or under
construction in the downtown area.
The 40% increase in residential can be largely attributed to the
strong economy in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater
Metropolitan Area. The second largest metropolitan area in the state
had an unemployment rate of just 4.3% at the start of 2016, down
nearly a percentage point from the prior year, and below Florida’s
statewide unemployment rate.
Nearly 16,000 businesses reside in St. Petersburg, notably John
Hopkins Health Systems (which is currently expanding their facilities
further), Raymond James Financial, Valpak, University of South
Florida, and the Tampa Bay Rays. St. Petersburg also lays claim to
the largest marine research center in the Southeast.
The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Area led all
metro areas in the state of Florida for year-over-year job gains in
education, health services, financial activities, and manufacturing in
2015. It is expected that area employers will expand payrolls by an
additional 38,000 workers during the course of 2016.
MARKET OVERVIEW
The culture of St. Petersburg is infused with art and entertainment. The
downtown encompasses a waterfront city where the temperate climate
encourages a pedestrian lifestyle. A wide array of activities are found
downtown ranging from history and art museums, over 50 independent
galleries, and street art murals to a thriving craft beer scene and live
sporting events.
The Salvador Dali Museum, Chihuly Collection, Morean Arts Center,
Museum of Fine Arts, and others will soon by joined by the Western and
American Indian art collection of Tom James. The museums are also
accompanied by other cultural venues including Jannus Live, American
Stage Theater, Palladium Theatre, the Mahaffey Theater, and The
Coliseum.
The city regularly plays host to outdoor festivals, international events,
and sports games. Events range from the IndyCar Firestone Grand
Prix, which attracts over 120,000 people during race week, to Ribfest,
Mainsail Arts Festival, and the St. Anthony’s Triathlon. The Tampa Bay
Rays (MLB) and Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) each have their home
stadiums in downtown St. Petersburg. The Sunshine City is regularly
drawing crowds of visitors with Second Saturday Art Walk, First Friday
Block Party, and the Saturday Morning Market.
