Daviess County has upwards of 1000 Amish families. The Amish came to this area around 1860 and live mainly in the Eastern rural part of the county on family farms and homesteads. The Amish in our area are descendants of Jacob Amman, a defector of the Swiss Mennonites. He believed in the practice of feet washing and shunning excommunicated members and his followers became known as the Amish. They came here to grow a community that believes in simplicity of life and a separation of church and state. They do not take part in any war or any form of violence and follow the Bible as the literal guide for their lives. This is reflected in their dress, their form of worship, their language and their lack of use of technology. Their church services are not held in a church but move around to each member’s houses. Church is communicated to the community in the Amish newspaper, Die Kurier, and is printed bi-weekly.Many of the rules the Amish live by are unwritten but followed without question and custom is meaningful to them to disconnect them from the worldly ways. Church and Family are of most importance and set the pattern for how they live. Good work ethic is a significant value in the community as many of them have a full-time job and a side business tucked in and around their homes and farms. They not only believe in being separate from the world but also in serving each

other by providing the things they need to live such as groceries, wares, clothing and shoes. Most businesses are open six days a week and all are closed on Sunday. There are many types of businesses owned by the Amish including buggy shops, collar shops, craft and book stores, furniture stores, fabric and quilt shops and even a hardware store and metal fabricating shop. Food is a specialty in the Amish community and one must take up the offer of eating with a family if invited or visit one of the local Amish Buffets.Amish, living in Daviess County, have held strongly to their tradition and most are taught Dutch German as their first language before or during the learning of English. They live simple lives without the conveniences such as electricity or automobiles. Their clothes are plain and simple as are their head coverings. Horse-drawn Buggies are their mode of transportation and many learn to drive their buggies as school children, to one of the 16 small school buildings. Most Amish children attend school until the age of 15 and then begin working on the family farm or outside employer. The Amish strive hard to maintain their heritage and background to which they are very dedicated. They value simplicity, hard work and the closeness of their families.
