    Maximum value: £2,500

The City of Edinburgh Council’s Culture Service is committed to promoting stronger collaboration, developing new partnerships and creating new funding streams for the culture sector in Edinburgh.

The Diversity & Inclusion Collaboration, Research, Development and Fund is aimed at supporting independent artists and creatives who wish to further their creative activity in partnership with other freelancers and continue collaborations, develop new projects or promote individual practice via digital media. DISRUPT

Grants are available to support the showcasing of new or existing creative work at the online digital arts festival 'DISRUPT' in July 2021.

    Maximum value: £5,000

    Application deadline: 30/01/2021

    Background and Objectives of Fund

DISRUPT is a new digital arts festival taking place in July 2021, coordinated by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. It has been set up to explore how performing arts has supported communities across the UK during the pandemic and how this time of uncertainty has encouraged new and radical ways of working. DISRUPT festival has been created in partnership with Barbican; Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance; Culture Mile; Guildhall School of Music & Drama; Lived Experience Network, Maya Productions; Museum of London; and Slung Low. The festival aims to bring together creatives, arts, communities, cultural and community organisations, researchers, charities, and schools from across the UK and is particularly keen to fund the following types of work which will be showcased at DISRUPT:

    • New and experimental performance-based projects created with, by and for communities during the pandemic.

    • Tools and tactics to build skills on new or different ways of working in the performing arts, including practical steps on how communities, artists and organisations can collaborate.

    • Projects that explore alternative and more democratic futures for the performing arts.

The programme offers three funding strands:

    • Community Commissions - grants of up to £5,000 are available for experimental and collaborative performance projects between communities and creative partners. The project should be a response to the COVID-19 pandemic or its consequences.

    • Tools and Tactics - grants of up to £1,000 are available to encourage and develop new collaborative skills by looking at what radical new ways of working have developed because of the pandemic. This could include how art is made, selected or thought about by involving and broadening who and how communities are involved in decision-making.

    • Alternative Futures - grants of up to £1,000 are available to help open up spaces to explore what needs to change in order to harness collective learnings (or unlearnings) about community collaboration.

The Open Call for creative proposals has been split into three strands:

    Community Commissions

    Awards for Young Musicians

Grants are available for the UK's most talented young instrumentalists in any genre, aged five to 17 years of age who, because of financial need, may be prevented from fulfilling their creative potential.

    Maximum value: £2,000

    Application deadline: 30/04/2021

    Background and Objectives of Fund

Awards for Young Musicians (AYM) is a registered charity. The organisation is the outcome of one man's consuming interest in music: Robert Lewin was a musician and musical instrument collector whose enthusiasm and passion for stringed instruments led him to accumulate a collection of instruments and bows of extraordinary quality. When Robert Lewin died, he expressed the wish that the gradual disposal of his legacy of valuable musical instruments and memorabilia would provide a source of scholarships for music students. With the encouragement and help of Eleanor Warren, former head of BBC Radio 3 and widely acknowledged international adjudicator, the charity was established in 1998. AYM helps musically talented young people from lower-income families overcome the barriers they face to progressing in their music-making and fulfilling their potential. AYM combines individual funding, mentoring and other musical/performance opportunities for young musicians; AYM also helps to improve the wider environment for their progression, through

  • Background and Objectives of Fund

Funding is provided by the Wingate Foundation. Funding is available under the following categories and at the discretion of the trustees:

    • Jewish life and learning.

    • Performing arts (excluding music).

    • Music.

    • Medical research travel grants.

No minimum or maximum level of grant is specified other than medical research travel grants, which are for up to £1,000.

Who Can Apply and Further Information

Charitable organisations in the UK are eligible to apply. Applications by organisations that award scholarships or bursaries are eligible and will be considered by the Foundation. Funding is available under the following categories:

Jewish life and learning - Support is available for activities that encourage Jewish cultural, academic and educational life in a manner that enhances the Jewish contribution to the life of the wider community. In particular, applications are invited from academic institutions specialising in Jewish subjects and from bodies promoting Jewish culture, including museums, libraries and literary publications. Applications are also welcomed from organisations able to demonstrate a record in inter-faith dialogue, in the promotion of reconciliation between Jews in Israel and their Arab neighbours and the encouragement of liberal values in both communities.

Performing arts (excluding music) - Applications are welcomed under one or both of the following categories:

    Performing arts - achieving excellence

    • Support is available for the performing arts with particular emphasis on financial support for not-for-profit companies with a record of artistic excellence that require additional funding, not available from public sources or commercial sponsorship, to broaden their repertoire or develop work of potentially outstanding interest that cannot be funded from usual sources.

    • Assistance will also be considered for training and professional development for creative talent or the technical professions.

Performing arts - education and social exclusion

    • Support is available for arts projects that place a particular emphasis on addressing educational or social exclusion outcomes.

Music - Support is available for those areas of music performance and education which do not readily attract backing from commercial sponsors or other funding bodies, or which are not eligible for public funding. Priority will be directed towards supporting the work or education of musicians based in, or wishing to study in, the UK, but by no means exclusively so. An important criterion will be whether, in the opinion of the Trustees, the funding sought will make a significant difference to the applicant's prospects. The Foundation will be prepared to consider applications for support for ongoing expenses and will be willing to consider such support for a period up to three years. Priority will be given to those organisations which give opportunities to young professionals and to education projects for young people as well as for new adult audiences. This would include direct assistance as well as funding for organisations which promote their work or performance, and support for Master Classes. The Foundation reserves the right to draw up particular priorities for a given year such as support for aspiring conductors, young composers, amateur choral work, or the musical education of young people and/or adults.

  • Medical research travel grants - The Trustees are mindful of the influence of new clinical and laboratory techniques on the advance of medical science, and are aware of the advantages that may be derived from visits to laboratories for the acquisition of new skills, and for setting up inter-institutional collaborative research. They are prepared to consider applications for funds to cover the expenses of travel and subsistence for such visits up to a maximum of £1,000. The following criteria apply:

    • Applications should specify the benefit to the applicant of a proposed visit, including the relevance to the applicant's ongoing research programme and career development.

    • Applications must be accompanied by letters of support from the applicant's Head of Department, and from the corresponding individual in the department to be visited.

    • Applicants must submit a CV.

    • Applications must include justification of the amount requested.

    How to Apply

The next deadline for applications is 21 February 2021, to be considered at the meeting in mid-March. An application form is available to download from the Wingate Foundation website and it should be submitted by email to the Foundation. Applications will be acknowledged by email. Applicants are required to detail how the funding they are seeking can be used under the constraints of the current government coronavirus/COVID-19 guidance for the sector. The Foundation is not able to advise whether or not an application has been shortlisted. Applicants who have not heard from the Foundation within two months of the deadline date can assume that their application has not been successful.

  • Maximum value: £3,000

    Application deadline: 06/02/2021

    Background and Objectives of Fund

The Golsoncott Foundation was established as a charitable trust in July 1998 from the estate of the artist and sculptor Rachel Reckitt. The Foundation's declared objective is "to promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the public in the arts generally and, in particular, the fine arts and music".

Who Can Apply and Further Information

Voluntary sector organisations in the UK whose focus is primarily on the arts can apply for funding. 'The trustees favour applications from arts organisations whose raison d’être is the art form itself, and its perfection or excellence in performance.'

The following are not eligible for funding:

    • Capital appeals from museums, galleries, theatres, arts complexes or other projects.

    • Applications from individuals and students seeking funding for academic or vocational courses.

    • Schools.

The Trustees’ overriding concern is to support those projects that demonstrate and deliver excellence in the arts, be it in performance, exhibition, artistic craft, or scholarly endeavour. Priority is given to applications that focus upon the perfection or promotion of the art in question. Additionally, for those applications involving young people, the trustees look to a long-lasting connection between them and the art form, one which aims at a significant level of participation and achievement, rather than projects that offer little scope for further involvement.

    How to Apply

The Trustees normally meet on a quarterly basis (early March, June, September, and December). Applications for grants should be sent to the administrator at the registered office at least a month before the meeting. The volume of applications is often very high, and the trustees may close the nominal deadline before the end of the quarter. Therefore, applicants are advised not to wait until the end of the quarter before submission, the earlier the application the more considered the first appraisal.

There is no set application form. Details of the information that should be included are provided on the Foundation's website along with contact details for the Foundation. Applications should be supplied in digital form and hard copy, which should not be stapled; accounts and other supporting information should be supplied in hard copy only. An e-mail contact is required with any application or enquiry. Most applications will be subject to a first appraisal; applicants who fail the first appraisal will be notified by e-mail. In almost all instances the trustees make their decisions at the quarterly determination meeting and applicants are notified by post within the following week.
