Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan in Mishnah Berurah explains that this is the time G-d is most connected to this world and is most compassionate. Interestingly, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margoliot, in his sefer, Mateh Ephraim, points out that the custom has developed to delay the recitation of the Selichot till the sun rises. If for whatever reason, a person or a community is not able to recite Selichot in the early morning hours, it is permissible to recite Selichot during the rest of the day. Rav Moshe Feinstein (O”H 2:105) explains that the custom to recite Selcihot immediately after chatzot (halahkic midnight), is also deeply rooted in Kabbalistic sources, and is another ideal time to recite Selichot. Rav Moshe suggests that if a person cannot wake up for Selichot in the early morning hours, it is better to recite the Selichot immediately after chatzot than later in the daytime. There are some accounts of righteous individuals reciting Selichot even earlier than midnight; however, Rav Moshe strongly discourages this practice if possible. HALAKHIC CORNER This Motzei Shabbat we will begin reciting Selichot. The custom, which originates from the times of the Geonim, is to recite special prayers in advance of Rosh HaShanah. Rav Yosef Karo in Shulchan Aruch (581/1) records the custom and writes that ideally, these prayers should be offered during the last three hours of the night.

TREE OF LIFE YICC’s Tree of Life is located on the 2nd fl near our Youth Rooms. One way to commemorate a Simcha is to dedicate a leaf engraved with the date and Simcha on our Shul’s Tree of Life. Whether it be a Birth, Bar/Bat-

Mitzvah, Wedding or Anniversary, our Shul’s Tree of Life is the perfect way to permanently celebrate your Simcha.

Many of our members have leaves on our Tree that were dedicated in their honor. It would be so nice to dedicate new leaves to honor new celebrations: marriages, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, babies…!

The latest leaves on our Tree are dedicated in honor of the Bar and Bat Mitzvahs of Ethan & Sarina Frankel.

The cost of a Leaf is $180. For more information please contact

the Shul Office at 310-273-6954 /[email protected]

SEFER MINHAGIM - SELICHOT

By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

1) The first Selichot, which takes place on Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah is recited at Halakhic Midnight. This Saturday night we will start at 12:45 AM

2) The Hazan on Saturday night or for any Selichot recited at night, borrows a Talit from a friend and does not use his own or a Shul owned Talit.

3) On Saturday night we open the Aron for the poem, המנוח במוצאי .

4) Everyone is encouraged to stand when reciting Selichot.

5) Selichot in the morning should be preceded by התורה ברכות .

6) At the end of Selichot we only say תחנון, skipping the passages of וכו׳ מ חי ומסי and jumping to ‘ וכו מר ישראלוש .

7) If there is no Minyan when Selichot begins, the Hazan should start without the Minyan, and when the Minyan arrives, he should repeat two verses from אשרי, followed by the opening Kaddish and continue from where he left off. When there is no Minyan the verses of רחום אל ‘ה‘ ה should not be said.
