Dear Members: Another month has quickly slipped away and I’m scram-bling to get this month’s ad-dress out. It appears, as the weather has stabilized, and the construc-tion business is gaining ground. Nationally, new home construction has not gained any ground but…. it hasn’t lost ground either. Al-though new home construc-tion didn’t gain ground the multifamily house market is showing steady increase as well as the remodeling market. These are sure signs that the housing market is getting back on solid ground.

The State association had its Spring Board Meeting and all went very well. The commit-tees are progressing nicely on the immediate issues and their long term goals. We are very excited that the Greater Charleston will host this year’s

State convention; October 2-4, 2014. This year’s conven-tion will be held the same weekend as the Doo Wop and Rod Run in Charleston. The State Association will sponsor Thursday evening’s entertainment at the Haddad Riverfront Park so plan to be part of the fun. Friday will be a day of com-mittee meetings, educational seminars, and vendors. We will end the day with a planned dinner including en-tertainment. On Saturday we will have a board meeting in the morn-ing, a slate of functions in the afternoon, and cap the eve-ning off at The Clay Center with dinner and the Best in West Virginia awards. There will be numerous activi-ties throughout the weekend, so make your plans to join us.

Message from President Tim Cunningham

“Life is too short to wake up with re-grets. So love the people who treat you right. Love the ones who don’t just be-cause you can. Believe everything hap-pens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Kiss slowly. Forget quickly. God never said life would be easy. He just promised it would be worth it.” Author Unknown

The next meeting will be June 9th at the Sleepy Hol-low Golf Club in Teays Val-ley.

Please mark it on your cal-endar, come out and sup-port the association. You don’t have to be a golfer to come to the dinner; this is a membership function. Come around 5:30—6:00 p.m. Call Peggy to make reservations. I look for-ward to seeing each of you on Monday, June 9th.

“The strength of this asso-ciation lies with all of us.”

President,

Tim Cunningham

Save a Buck USE LESS GAS—here’s how to blunt warmer-weather car woes. Tires can lose air at a higher rate, reducing gas mileage and decreasing their life span, so ensure proper inflation. Heat is the leading cause of car bat-tery failure, so top off fluid, clean corrosion from ter-minals and make sure cables are tightly connected.

Park in the shade to reduce gas evaporation; Clip Lawn Costs—To save time and money on lawn care, use a mulching mower. No need to collect the grass clippings—they’re left right on your lawn to de-compose. They’ll generate enough nitrogen and elimi-nate one fertilizer application (think autumn) and will provide moisture to shade roots and reduce watering needs. You can buy a mulching mower new or a retro-

fit kit for your old machine.

house and ensuring it is cool and dry. ♦ Head to the beach. If you want to

spend time outdoors, areas by the ocean will have pollen counts that are much lower than in mountainous ar-eas.

♦ Dry clothes indoors. Line dried clothes

may smell fresh, but they can bring mold and pollens indoors and exacer-bate allergies.

♦ Shower frequently. After being out-

doors, take a shower to rinse off any al-lergens clinging to hair and skin.

♦ Check with a doctor before mixing al-

lergy medications with any prescrip-tions you are taking, ensure that they are safe to mix. If your doctor is un-available, consult with a pharmacist about drug interactions.

Coping with Seasonal Allergies The season of allergy induced sniffles and other complications is upon us. If you are one of the millions of people af-fected by seasonal allergies that lead to nasal swelling, sneezing, watery eyes, and a scratchy throat, you may not be eagerly anticipating the warmer weather as much as others. Allergy research is ongoing, and in the future doctors may be able to prevent allergic reactions from occurring rather than treating the symptoms that ensue. Until then, you will have to work with the remedies that currently exist. These remedies include antihistamines, which can cause dangerous interactions with other medications an d may cause drowsiness. These side effects can be dangerous for use in seniors. Consider these other options instead: ♦ Drink plenty of fluids. Although liq-

uids can’t wash the allergens out of your system, water, juice and clear broths can help loosen congestion. Hot liquids can soothe inflamed membranes to the nose and throat.

♦ Avoid allergens as much as possible.

Check weather reports for the levels of particulates in the air and stay in-doors if they are high. Keep away from tall grasses and places with a lot of foliage.

♦ Use the air conditioning. Rather than

keeping the windows wide open, use an air conditioner and dehumidifier to filter the air coming inside of the

Random Facts: A lump of pure gold the size of a matchbox can be flattened into a sheet the size of a tennis court. It’s impossible to sink in the Dead Sea without equipment. If you keep a golf fish in the dark, it will eventually turn white. It takes up to 2 hours to hard boil an os-trich egg. An olive tree can live up to 1,500 years. Dueling is legal in Paraguay, as long as both parties are registered blood donors. 23% of all photocopies faults worldwide are caused by people sitting on them and photocopying their butts. Women end up digesting most of the lip-stick they apply. The yin-yang pattern’s earliest use is in Rome. Not China!

Building features home owners are us-ing to improve a energy efficiency. The most popular green building fea-tures in the first quarter of 2014 were: ♦ High performance windows, including

Low-E and Argon gas windows. ♦ High-efficiency HAVC systems ♦ Programmable thermostats ♦ Energy Star appliances Other popular features include ceiling fans, moisture-control products (such as bathroom fans) water conserving fix-tures, and high performance insulation. “The improved availability and afforda-bility of high performing building prod-ucts means energy-efficient features are being incorporated into more home im-provement projects,” says NAHB Remod-elers chairman Paul Sullivan. “Remodeling not only improves the over-all layout and features of a home, but depending on the upgrades you choose, you can also save money on utilities, im-prove indoor air quality and strengthen the long-term value of your home.” Source: National Association of Home Builders

and a look at 2010. Remember the HBAGC New Year’s Resolutions you wrote? Did you succeed? We will find out at the January meeting when we select several to read. And……..just so you can be thinking about those HBAGC resolutions we will be doing them again. This is a great way for your to think about your membership and what you want from it! Have you ever served on one of the HBAGC committees? If not now is the time to consider serving. How many meeting did you attend in 2009?

Consider attending more in 2010. D o e s y o u r c o m p a n y participate in the WVHS? Did you help in the HBAGC booth at the Home Show? Did you play golf? Or attend the dinner after the tournament? There are so many ways that you could help the HBAGC and get so much more from your membership. The HBAGC p r o v i d e s s o m a n y opportunities to network and to sell your company. Take those opportunities and get to k n o w o t h e r s i n t h e association. Are you aware of all of our discount program available as a member? We have health & dental insurance; super fleet with Super America, Marathon & Pilot Stations. (By the way Stan Rose with Super America will be the guest speaker at our February 2010 meeting). UPS discounts, HP computer discounts, Omaha Steaks (what builder doesn't

like a good steak)? Thinking about buying a new vehicle in 2010? Don’t forget the $500. discount offered from GM. Planning to take a vacation? Check out the Wyndham hotel savings. Going to order books? Don’t forget to c h e c k o u t BuilderBooks.com. The HBAGC will get a rebate on all the books you order. So that is a win-win. We will be reviewing all of the program in the HBAGC newsletter, we want to make sure each member is aware of ALL of the benefit on being a members of the HBAGC. So check it out each month; this months we will be reviewing the Federal E x p r e s s D i s c o u n t .
