Anundergraduate degree can leadto further education andspecialisation in cartography, geoinformatics, GIS, ruraldevelopment, town planning, and development studies orsocial work. There are careersand jobs where the transferableskills of geographers can be putto good use. Examples includeadministration andmanagement, defence services,

Withoutgeography you get lost.Geographers help us explainand understand the world'sweather, oceans, biospheresand landscapes, and the wayour environment is shaped bywind, water, ice and tectonicactivity. Geographers ask whereand why things are located onthe surface of the earth, howplaces differ, and how peopleinteract with the environment.Geography is unique in linkingthe social and natural sciencestogether. It is concerned withstudying the earth's topographyand climate and how theseaffect living things.Geographers analyseeconomic, social, and physicalresources while attempting toexplain the relationshipsbetween people andenvironment. Maps are themost important tools forgeographers. Today, computers have transformedmap-making and opened upextraordinary opportunities forgeographers to work incomputer cartography, remotesensing, and geographicinformation systems (GIS).These geospatial technologiesare used to forecast weather,

monitor land use, manageforests, plan transportationroutes, select retail sites, andeven prevent crime.SKILLS DEVELOPED:Geography is an intellectuallychalleng ing subject. Mostgeography graduates arenumerate, literate, good teamworkers, can think analyticallyand critically, and are highlycomputer literate. The study ofgeography enhances a student'sanalytical capabilities to collect/select, analyse, present andinterpret primary and secondarydatasets, and to understand andvisualise complex data.FORMAL EDUCATION: Thestudy of geography is usuallyoffered in most universities, buta few universities only offer itunder the science discipline, while a few offer geography inboth the arts and sciencedisciplines, depending upon theprior academic base of theconcerned student. Students ofgeography in the science streammay pursue master's degree/

    { 21 - 27 fA, 2012 NIJUKTI KHABARPoster Colour and Poster inks

Product Introduction: Poster colours are a range of colours used for commercial work. They areavailable in solutions, paste and solid forms. A number of mediums are used in artist colours such aswater colour oil, paints etc. Poster colours also constitute a specialised class of water colour inks. They consists of the usual pigments ground or dispersed in a vehicle composed of a stabilizedemulsion of two essentially immiscible liquids. Poster inks come under the group which are used forscreen printing, i.e., printing on advertising posters in brilliant colours from a cheap stencil, onspecial materials, P.V.C., Canvas etc., printing transfers on gummed paper from photographiccopies of artists sketches of a wide type and diversify also on fibre board boxes. There are threetypes of air drying screens ink: (i) Water colours (ii) Oil based (iii) Nitro-cellulose-based. Oil BasedInks. Oil based inks are cheaper and particularly suitable for posters. The vehicle used is based onstand oils, alkyds or an oleoresin base, but often includes some solvents. Since these inks dry mainlyby oxidation some cobalt drier is incorporated. Nitrocellulose Inks. These inks can be used atconsistencies varying from 450 poise depending on the printing conditions. They are more

expensive than oil based screen inks, but possess several advantages. Oil based screen ink give thickfilms. Nitrocellulose gives media of suitable viscosity, but which have a low solids content, consequently although nitrocellulose based inks are printed at the normal thickness for the type ofthe screen the films are much thinner. Properties: These inks should be short, so that its drag on thesqueeze does not occur, and clear print can be obtained. It should not be oily to prevent disfigurationof prints. It should run over the screen easily without much pressure and it must not allow the printto drop from the screen without causing blur. B.I.S. Specification: Bureau of Indian Standard hasdeveloped standard specification for poster colours. This is given by. IS : 8101(1976) Poster colours(with Amendment I) Prescribes requirements and methods of sampling and test of the material.Manufacturing Process: Poster Colour. 2% solution of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) is preparedin cold water. Carton OI and phenol are added and ground to paste. To prevent floculation of inkresocol is used as a binder. Water Colour. 10 parts by weight of yellow dextrins is dissolved in 100parts of water by heating with continuous stirring. Previously prepared mixture of powdered gumarabic 25 parts and 25 parts water is added to above solution. 100 parts of glycerine, 1 part ofammonium alum, 2 parts of 40 % formaldehyde and 3 parts of soft potash soap is added. This is thevehicle. It may be used in the preparation of both transparent and opaque inks. All these inks will dryin a short time and may be over printed with other colours after a brief interval. Oil Based Ink. Thevehicle is prepared by adding white spirit to 100 poise stand oil. The purpose of addition of whitespirit is to reduce the viscosity. After that for desired colour different materials are added i.e., forblack 3 % carbon black, for white 6 % calcium carbonated and 15 % red chrome for red coloration.A lot of cheap extender can be incorporated. These inks printed at 50 microns on M.G. Poster paperset in about half an hour and dry in about four hours. Nitro Cellulose Inks. Nitrocellulose screen inksrequire special pigments. Permanent Red R and Helio Red are suitable red pigments, but amoderate bleed normally occur on over printing. Monastral green is very light-fast with no bleed onover printing. For blue colour bronze blue or monastral bluer are used. The pigments are ground at50% concentration into plasticizers. Nitrocellulose dissolved in a ketone alcohol is added to thepigments. Thinner used are aromatic white spirit mixed with a little ketonic-alcohol solvent. A widevariety of commercial synthetic resins are comparable with nitrocellulose and some of these can beused with advantage in this type of vehicle.FORMULATIONS: Water Colour-(1) White colour :(a) Dextrin solution 3 gallons Gum arabic solution 4 gallonsStarch solution 5 gallons Titanium dioxide 300 lbs.Lithopone 200 lbs. Poster colours and inks can be manufactured inthe same unit with not much of additional machinery equipment requirement. The market for postercolours shall be mainly in adjoining urban areas and with the ever increasing stress on salespromotion activities for marketing a product the consumption of poster colours is bound to increase.A good product mix of a number of poster colours and inks will make a unit more economical andwill also equip the unit to diversify its production as per the needs and requirement of the marketdemand. The machinery and equipment for the manufacture of such colours is available indigenouslyand is not very expensive. Furthermore the process technology being quite simple these items aremost suited for the development in the rural and backward areas. Hence there is good scope in thisline of manufacturing.
