Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

Following our 10:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Ellie Furry, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Godly Care-An unique opportunity for children ages 2 - 4 to get to know God through music, crafts, prayers and stories. Classes are in the Under-Six Classrooms A & B.

Godly Play-Children in kindergarten through second grade gather in the Ruth Christie Room to learn the language of God’s people through sacred space, stories, parables and liturgical actions.

Godly Kids-Worship education for children in grades 3 and 4 inthe Meeting Room. Godly Kids return to the sanctuary during the final hymn and sit together until their parents meet them following the postlude.

10:10 a.m. Sept. 13th: Christian Education Open House for all ages in Community Hall

Beginning Sept. 20th: Prime Time Education Hour for all ages.

Our Month of Musical Masterworks continues at the 10 o’clock service this morning with the seldom-heard (in Church, anyway!) guitar concerto by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). We’re grateful to Glenn Lyons, of the West Chester University faculty, for providing this unique musical experience for us today. Next Sunday: The series concludes on August 30 with Johannes Brahms’ amazing Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, featuring soloists Timothy Schwarz (violin) and Lawrence Stomberg (cello). The first movement of this profound work will begin approximately 9:45 a.m.

Sing for Joy!Westminster Choir Rehearsals start September 2nd

You know those people in the cool blue robes who sit in the choir loft on Sunday mornings, leading our singing in worship and giving as well as making their own musical offerings? Ever notice how much fun they’re having? You can have that much fun too! During the “school year,” the Westminster Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings (7:30 – 9:30) and sings weekly at the 9:00 a.m. worship service. Our first rehearsal for the 2009-10 season is Wednesday, September 2nd. Come sing with us! New singers are always welcome, and we know you’ll have a great time.

Special bonus this year: As you may have heard – since this kind of news always gets around pretty quickly – this year the choir is going on tour again, this time to Germany in May 2010. We will visit Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and other beautiful sites in the Bavarian region. And here’s the deal: Westminster Choir members have the opportunity to earn a substantial discount off the tour price!

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you find your heart is heavy as you worship this morning – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following both services and to offer compassionate support. If you go to the piano at the conclusion of either service, someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you, and if desired, pray with you.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know so that we may include that person on our prayer list. Do You Know the Muffin Man? Well, this could be you – even if you’re not a man. The Holy Toast Café will be reopening on September 13th, and we need lots of volunteers to bake 2-3 dozen muffins to offer for sale each Sunday. The congregation enjoyed a wide variety of sumptuous muffins last year and many folks are already talking about when they can again taste their favorite blueberry or bran muffin! WHOLENESS IN BODY AND SPIRIT

HealthySteps is an exercise program to improve mobility and quality of life for cancer survivors and those with chronic immune disorders. There will be a free, introductory class on September 11, from 9-10:00 a.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Naamans Road in Wilmington.  The class will regularly meet on Friday mornings.  Please call the instructor, Joy Mulholland, at 397-1134 for class details.  See www.gohealthysteps.com for information on the program.

A new 12-week Grief Support group, Living Through Loss, will be offered this fall on Sunday evenings from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Dr. Ledbetter will lead this education and grief support group Sunday evenings September 20 – December 6, and enrollment is limited to 10 people. Be a Part of Westminster By Heart Westminster By Heart is a new group that has formed over the summer but will continue to grow as we move into our church year. The purpose of the group is to develop tellers who will present scripture in our worship services about once a month. We will be meeting during the Education Hour beginning September 20th to learn some techniques for this biblical discipline and to help one another as we learn these stories together. Westminster By Heart will provide a unique opportunity to study scriptures, to foster a deeper personal connection to the stories of the Bible, and to develop skills for telling Scripture in worship.

We are fortunate at Westminster to already have a strong base of talented tellers who have demonstrated their abilities, most notably at the Maundy Thursday services for the past three years. Be a part of expanding this potential, connecting

to the stories of our faith, and sharing the story with our congregation. Even if you’re not sure that you’re ready to tell but you are fascinated by the process, you are welcome! CONGREGATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

This morning our 10:00 am worship service will include the BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS as we launch our children and youth into the upcoming school year with God’s abundant blessings and the love and support of our church family. We will present the filled backpacks we have gathered to the principal of Shortlidge Academy Elementary School, who will distribute the packs to students when they return in September.

Ice Cream Social Today at 11:00 am. Please join Westminster’s Deacons for our annual Ice Cream Social in Community Hall. There will be delicious ice cream and tasty toppings.

We need two more women or men computer mentors for the second computer literacy class for residents in Burton and Daughtry Houses, beginning in early September. The course consists of 7 or 8 weeks in the evenings,1-1/2 hour sessions at the Daughtry House, to “cross the digital divide”. We’ve developed a written teaching plan that covers computer basics: the Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word and Excel, and keyboarding. It’s directed to online job applications, writing résumés and enhancing employability. Call Jim Clark @ 996-0406 for more information.

It Really Isn’t Finished Yet. Join your fellow Westminster members in New Orleans for a week of fulfilling work and fellowship. We will be hosted again by St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church through their RHINO projects. Accommodations are a bit more posh than past trips, as participants will be staying at Brent House, a residence hotel. Act now – only two chances left! Mission Fair in Honor of ChadWe all know that our Chad Miller had a passion for mission. In recognition of his strong support of mission, the Joint Mission Committee is hosting a Mission Fair. The Fair will be held on Sunday, September 20 th and Sunday, September 27th in Community Hall. All members are invited to attend and learn about the mission efforts Chad was so passionate about. We also hope that in his honor each member will give of their time to one (or more) of these efforts. Chapel Club, our “tried and true” midweek program for children (Grades 3 – 6) is getting a face lift! Beginning September 2009, Chapel Club will finish 30 minutes earlier, at 7:00 p.m. rather than 7:30 p.m.

Our Closing Celebration is Tuesday, March 16
