We’ll be seeking a place, as the Bible notes, were we can find “the peace that passes all understanding.”

Picturing Mary - Daughtry House Classroom (next to WPC parking lot)DVD with discussionThis moving program takes viewers on an artistic journey spanning almost two thousand years and crossing four continents. Picturing Mary visits museums, chapels, and cathedrals in eight countries to view rare and sacred masterpieces by such artists as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Duccio in their original locations. From tiny personal images to giant mosaics and frescoes, these treasured artworks show how artists have expressed their personal devotion, and are an enduring testament to Mary as the sublime embodiment of the virtues, joys and sorrows of the human race.

Parenting – Ruth Christie Room Group led. Class discussion built around a powerful DVD series called Nooma. Each viewing session deals with a particular “real life” topic as seen through Jesus’ perspective, and serves as a means to generate discussion and sharing. Nooma encourages group members to search, question, and join the conversation.

Westminster By Heart – Meeting Room Led by Biblical Storytellers Shelley Gnade and Mary-beth Howard. This offers a unique opportunity to study scripture, foster a personal connection to stories of the Bible, and develop skills for telling Scripture in worship. Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or [email protected]. Available dates for flowers are January 3, 10, 17, and 31.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or [email protected].)

MUSIC

Joy to the World: New Westminster Choir CD now available! In answer to popular request, we recently made a professional recording of some of our favorite carols and anthems for the Christmas season. The CD selections include music from Handel’s Messiah, anthems by John Rutter, traditional carols, and possibly the most powerful rendition of “O Holy Night” you’ll hear anywhere. Selling price is $15, and proceeds will help finance the choir’s upcoming tour to Germany. Also available is our 2003 hit recording, All Hail the Power, as well as some live concert recordings from recent years. Look for the blue-robed Westminster Choir sales representatives between services this morning!

Please welcome our three newest members.Better yet, invite them to join you in something you are doing!

Jerry and Lucille Greth – Jerry, a retired chemist, teaches computer at the Academy of Life Long Learning. Lucille, a retired nurse, is an avid gardener and member of the Jr. Board of Christiana Hospital. Jerry and Lucille, who were high school sweethearts, have lived in the Wilmington area for 52 years. They have two children. They feel at home at Westminster, as they know many of our members including Dolly and Don Windsor and Jerry and Barbara Fedeler are the Greth’s parish partners.

Dr. Jill Biden, an educator for the past 29 years, continues to teach English classes at a DC-area community college. She is a mother of three, grandmother of five and wife of Vice President, Joe Biden. In her service to the nation, Jill visits and speaks on the importance of community colleges. She has been very dedicated to military families and established the Biden Breast Health Initiative to support early detection. Jill is a life-long Presbyterian.

December Mission Emphasis: “Sharing Our Plenty”

The Christmas season is filled with wonderful traditions. At Westminster, we emphasize “Sharing Our Plenty” with those less fortunate than we. Perhaps you donate food for the Christmas Boxes that will feed 135 neighboring families. Perhaps you take a star from the tree and purchase a gift for someone who might not otherwise receive one. Another significant way that you can reach out as an essential part of our community of faith is to make a financial contribution to our Christmas Eve Offering, taken up each year and dedicated to outreach ministries for those in need.

Dr. Cecile De Sweemer from Congo Visits Westminster this afternoon.Join a small gathering in Classroom 6 from 12:15 – 1:30 p.m. for a soup ‘n sandwich discussion with Dr. Cecile De Sweemer. She will provide provocative insights about the dire conditions in Congo stemming from the extreme food crisis and decades of unhealthy and unstable living conditions. (See her recent letter in the December Chimes.) Westminster donations help support Dr. Cecile’s work combating hunger and disease, and providing for orphans and refugees -- through nutrition centers, health clinics, agricultural development, sanitation and clean water programs.

An Advent Story -- A Thanks-Giving in Congo: A letter from our sister church in Congo reveals that their food crisis has persisted for longer than one year. Times are very difficult for the people but they are thankful for Westminster’s recent gift of $1500 which provided 82 families food for a month. To read the entire story, pick up the yellow sheet entitled An Advent Story -- A Thanks-Giving in Congo, on the literature tables in the main hall or the pavilion.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone in the congregation who bought a Christmas present for a person in need. Our Christmas Boxes project couldn’t succeed without you!

Still want to support the Christmas Boxes project? You can take a contribution envelope from the pew pocket, place your donation inside, and mark “Christmas Boxes Project” on the outside. We’ll use the money raised to buy food cards for turkeys, hams or whatever is needed to complete this project. Your support is appreciated!

Did you make a 3-year pledge to Westminster’s Habitat for Humanity house? In September 2006 more than 150 Westminster members and friends framed two townhomes on our church lawn for Webster Village in Wilmington. At that time Westminster committed $50,000 or “half a house” in financial support. Your generous pledges to that project enabled Linda Evans and her family to move into their new home by Christmas 2007.The final payment on our commitment to Habitat is due by year-end. If you have a balance on your Habitat pledge to Westminster, please complete it as soon as you can. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Brown (302-654-5214, x-129) or [email protected]. Thank you for your generous support!

The Advent Event invited us to enter a Place of Peace.  If you have not yet had a chance to do so, we invite you to visit Community Hall and see the Peace banners.  Most were made for Westminster by Sue Weissinger and Mary Field.  Each banner is reflected in the peace book found in our children’s worship bags. The banners offer us ideas for peacemaking.  The large green banner with the dove and the flowers is the New Castle Presbytery Peace Banner.  Each flower represents a church which has pledged to support peace.

16
