    AT LEAST two staffers at aChandigarh governmenthospi-tal,whoworked in its X-ray de-partment, have been detectedwith high levels of radiation,withoneofthemsentforfurtherexamination to the BhabaAtomic ResearchCentre (BARC)inMumbai.

    Oneofthestafferswasadarkroom assistant, while the otherwas a technical assistant in theradiography department of theGovernment Multi SpecialityHospital (GMSH) here. Both arewomen. Both have been takenoff their labdutiesandassignedclericalworkatanothergovern-menthospital.

    Dr Vandana Gupta, medicalsuperintendent, GMSH, con-firmedtoTheIndianExpressthatthehospitalhadreceivedreportsof twostaffmemberswithoverexposureofTLD(radiationmon-itoring).

    Wearesendingoneofthemfortest,toseeif thewomanisre-ally exposed to radiation or itwasduetosomefault intheTLDbadge,shesaid.Wearealreadytakingmeasuresforthesafetyoftheemployees.

    TheTLDbadgeor thermolu-minescentdosimeteriswornbyradiographystaffandisusedformonitoringradiationlevels.Thebadges are sent every threemonthstoanagencyinBiharau-thorised by BARC, and BARCsends the analysis back to thehospital. In the last report that

    the GMSH received, BARCflaggedthehighexposureof thetwoemployees.

    Guptasaidoneof thestaffershadgiveninwritingthatshehadleft her badge inside the room,and that the high reading wasbecause of this. We think thatthe other one, too, was not fol-lowing the guidelines , but weare sending her to BARC just toensure that everything is okaywithher, saidGupta .

    GMSH, located in Chan-digarhs Sector-16, has three X-raymachines in three separaterooms.Onavisit to thehospitalon Wednesday, The IndianExpress saw X-rays being con-ductedinroomswiththeirdoorsopen,woodenslatsusedasshut-ters in one of the rooms andnon-functional red and greenalertbulbs.

    Ateamcamehereforthein-spection and they suggestedsomemodificationsfortheX-raymachine rooms and we areworking on it. We have thedrawings ready and we havesent them to the engineeringwing, shesaid.

    Explaining the lack of infra-structure, Gupta said that thehospital is very old andwhenthedepartmentwassetup,therewerenoguidelines.Wearenowmodifyingitaccordingtothelat-est guidelines by the BARC inMumbai, shesaid.

    She said the hospital hadtaken full precautions by re-

    placing the lead sheets thatstaffers must wear while con-ductingX-rays.Theradiographydepartment of the hospital hasaround12technicians.

    Sushmita Ghosal, ProfessorandHead,DepartmentofRadio-therapy, PGIMER, said: The ra-diation safety officer must seewhatwentwrong andwhy thisis happening. If the regulatoryauthority has suggested ame-thod of correction, it should beimplemented immediately.

    inthemurdercase,Nishamwaslistedasagoonafterthestatepo-lice slappedrelevant sectionsofthe Kerala Anti-Social ActivitiesPrevention Act. Accordingly, hewas consigned to jail withoutany trial for sixmonths.

    Nisham moved SupremeCourtwithabailplea,whichthecourt rejected, observing thatthe case showed the rich werebecomingegocentric.

    When the trial began,primeprosecutionwitnessKCAnoop,a colleague of Chandrabose,turned hostile. He said he hadnot seenChandrabosebeinghitbythevehicledrivenbyNisham.Thestatementtriggeredruckus,forcing Anoop to correct it.When the trial resumed,AnooptoldthecourtthathehaddilutedhisstatementunderduressfromNisham's family, andwentbackto the original version inwhichhesaidhehadseenChandrabosebeingattackedbyNisham.

    Thecasealsotriggeredripplesinthepolicedepartment.FormerKeralaDGPKSBalasubramaniamfaced allegations that he tried toprotect Nisham. Then Thrissurcity police commissioner JacobJobwas suspended for a secretmeetingwithNisham.

    A32-YEAR-OLD engineerwork-ing for IBMwas found strangu-latedwith the chord of a laptopcharger in her house in Beng-aluruTuesday,police said.

    Thewomanhasbeenidenti-fied as Kusum Rani, a native ofPunjab. She had been trans-ferred to Bengaluru sixmonthsagofromGhaziabadinUttarPra-deshandwaslivinginMahaveerKingsApartment,Kadugodi.

    The police suspect she waskilled sometimeonTuesday af-ternoon,butthemurdercametolight around7.30pm,whenherroommateNidhireturnedhomefromoffice. Nidhi informed theKadugodipolice,whoarrivedtofind Ranis body in a pool ofblood. The police suspect shewas also attackedwith a sharpweapon.

    Our investigations have re-vealed that one person visitedherapartmentaround12.30pmonTuesday,saidMBBorali-nga-iah, Deputy Superintendent ofPolice (South-Eastdivision).

    Herstatementwasrecordedbefore the magistrate in Sep-tember, said Mishra, addingthey were yet to record state-mentsof some jail inmates.
