TEACHER NOTES:

The task chosen needs to be a simple experiment the students can easily follow.A focus question is supplied to the students. This can be in the form of an aim, hypothesis or simple question for the students to answer. For this standard a "fair test" may be the best method to follow. The students need to be given all resources for the experiment and MUST be supplied with a template for them to write their answers on.

The template produced needs to contain A focus question The method to be followed including independent and dependent variables ststed. A simple results sheet and space to record if method followed. (1.2) A place for the teacher to record the students ability to follow instructions (1.1) A box where the students show some processing of results, could be a simple graph, a table

etc. (2.1) A box to write a valid conclusion. (2.1)

Remember students may verbally report on their experiment but teachers need to attest to this for moderation purposes.

Possible experiments.

Concentration of HCL acid with magnesium, calcium carbonate.Speed of trolley related to slope anglePhotosynthesis studies. Change CO2 concentrations etc

Assessment schedule(NOTE teacher to add evidence for chosen experiment)

Element. Evidence JudgementE 1 1.1 Student able to follow instructions Must be achievedE 1 1.2 Student follows the method

Eg:Student able to record results.Eg:

Both must be achieved

E 2 2.1 Student shows some processing of results.Eg:Student gives a valid conclusion.Eg:

Both required for achievement.

The following activity (How can solutions be grouped?) and assessment schedule is a sample assessment for this unit standard.

NOTES:The names for the solutions are given as (mostly) archaic names so that students will (hopefully) group the solutions according to chemical property rather than by name (ie name contains “acid”).

The solutions are Limewater: calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2:]Lye: sodium hydroxide [NaOH]Oil if Vitriol: sulfuric acid [H2SO4]Spirits of Hartshorn: ammonia [NH3 / NH4OH]Spirits of Salt: hydrochloric acid [HCl]

For safety, all solutions should have concentration approximately 0.1 molL-1

The indicators suggested need not be used, but if others are substituted the assessment schedule would need to be amended.

Caution!Treat all solutions and indicators as poisonous and corrosive.Clean up spillages immediately.Rinse skin or clothing with water if you come in contact with these

Time allowed: Maximum 1 period

Instructions: Read the instructions carefully and write your answers in the spaces provided.

Introduction:Even though chemicals in solution may look the same, they have different chemical properties. Solutions can be grouped according to similarities and differences in chemical properties.

Focus Question:How can solutions be grouped?

Task:You have five different solutions, all of which are colourless. You are to carry out the practical activity below and record your observations in the table under “Observations”. The practical activity uses four different indicators.

You then use these observations to sort the five solutions into two groups.

The five colourless solutions are:A. LimewaterB. LyeC. Oil of VitriolD. Spirits of HartshornE. Spirits of Salt

The four indicators are: Bromothymol blue Methyl orange Phenolphthalein Phenol red

Practical Activity:1. Take four clean test tubes. Into each place about 5 mL (1 teaspoon) of limewater.2. To the first test tube add 5 drops of bromothymol blue indicator. Record the final

colour of the mixture in the “Observations” table.3. To the second test tube add 5 drops of methyl orange indicator. Record the final

colour of the mixture in the “Observations” table.4. To the third test tube add 5 drops of phenolphthalein indicator. Record the final

colour of the mixture in the “Observations” table.5. To the fourth test tube add 5 drops of phenol red indicator. Record the final colour

of the mixture in the “Observations” table.6. Rinse all test tubes carefully.7. Carry out steps 1 6 four more times, each time with a different solution. Instead

of limewater (step 1) use lye, then oil of vitriol, then spirits of hartshorn and finally spirits of salt.

PC1.2 YGrouping:

Use the results you have obtained to divide the five solutions into two groups (Group 1 and Group 2). A group must contain at least 2 or 3 solutions. The solutions in each group must have similar chemical properties.

Record the solutions in each group in the top row of the table below.

In the “conclusion” box explain why you grouped the solutions the way you did.

correctly for three solutions. May be differences in colour interpretation (eg pink/red and clear/colourless for phenolphthalein)

2.1 Solutions A, B and D grouped togetherORC and E together. (Title of group is irrelevant.)

Conclusion states the colours of the final mixtures are the same for all of the group.

Groups correctly identified.Conclusion is valid.
