21ST CENTURY LEARNING
AN INTRODUCTION
THE CASE FOR DEVELOPING 21ST CENTURY LEARNING SKILLS
‘…education was built for an economy and a society that no longer exists. In the manufacturing and agrarian economies that existed 50 years ago, it was enough to master the “Three Rs” (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In the modern “flat world,” the “Three Rs” simply aren’t enough. If today’s students want to compete in this global society, however, they must also be proficient communicators, creators, critical thinkers, and collaborators…’

CRITICAL THINKING
independent thinking or thinking for oneself.
CRITICAL THINKING
“The link between critical thinking and education is obvious: one can’t learn well without thinking well.”

CREATIVITY
More than 60 definitions of creativity were found in a review of relevant literature.
“Imaginative activity fashioned so as to produce outcomes that are both original and of value”
NACCCE, All Our Futures, 1999, p30
Involves thinking or behaving imaginatively
This imaginative activity is purposeful; directed towards achieving an outcome
These processes must generate something original
The outcome must be of value in relation to the objective
QCA, A View of Creativity, 2006, p4
CREATIVITY
‘Many educators and employers see creativity as a vital 21st century
competency. While researchers have not settled on a single definition of
creativity, Jackson and Messick (1965, p319) suggest that “unusualness,
appropriateness, and transformation in varying combinations
characterize a large proportion of those things we are willing to call
creative.”’

Who do you think of as ‘creative’ and how do you recognise that?
What do you think that it takes to be a creative person?

COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION
“Communication and collaboration are identified as vital 21st century competencies by most researchers.
Communication is vital to facilitate teamwork and lies at the core of empathy, trust, conflict resolution, and negotiation. For instance, effectiveness with clients often hinges on effective communication and the teamwork necessary to produce a superior product. The importance of communication and collaboration in the workforce has generated increased focus on these skills in schools.”

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
“What should students learn in the 21st century? At first glance, this question divides into two: what should students know, and what should they be able to do? But there's more at issue than knowledge and skills. For the innovation economy, dispositions come into play: readiness to collaborate, attention to multiple perspectives, initiative, persistence, and curiosity. While the content of any learning experience is important, the particular content is irrelevant. What really matters is how students react to it, shape it, or apply it. The purpose of learning in this century is not simply to recite inert knowledge, but, rather, to transform it. It is time to change the subject.”

LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
“There is wide agreement that we need new models of education, and not simply new models of schooling, but entirely new visions of learning better suited to the increasing complexity, connectivity, and velocity of our new knowledge society. We now have the capability to reimagine where, when, and how learning takes place.”
