    Century Project Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL)

    Background

    To enable teachers from the region to interact and share best practices in the area and also help

    further strengthen networks between education institutions in ASEAN to support ASEAN

    Communities 2015, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Open Learning

    Centre (SEAMOLEC) will conduct the Project Based Learning model entitled 21 Century Project

    Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL) among schools in Southeast Asia and other SEAMEO

    associated member countries. SEAMOLEC with 16 years of experience in developing of Open and

    Distance Learning in Southeast Asia consider that there is a need to foster 21st skills especially the

    4Cs skills creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication in the learning process of

    schools particularly in Southeast Asia. These activities will consist of one month online course and

    face-to-face workshop. An online social learning network will be used as a media to provide

    materials sharing, discussions, interactions, and also evaluation for students among countries.

    Objective

    1. Trying out on certain Project-based Learning Model associated with 21st century skill

    development.

    2. Equipping and empowering the participants with the ability to create Cross-Curricular project

    ideas and incorporate digital tools and resources

    3. Conducting feasibility study on e-collaborative learning model among schools in Southeast Asia

    and SEAMEO associated member countries to develop culture tolerance among countries

    To reach this goal, Participants will:

    Design, discuss and arrange a pilot project

    Be introduced to some digital tools to support the project

    Be introduced to some tips in managing projects Be encouraged to create projects idea suitable for their context

    Mechanism

    There are six activities involved in this model described as follow:

    1. Online course on 21st

    Century Project Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL) for teachers.

    This phase is needed to get mutual understanding among participants about issues and

    challenges in PBL, PBL across subject, 21 century skills in PBL as well as integrating Edmodo

    in PBL. It will be also the first stage of planning their PBL pilot project. These activities willbe conducted one month and they are illustrated below:

    o The participants have to join the virtual class in www.edmodo.com as a teacher and

    go to the class 21st

    Century Project-based Learning (Across Subject) with the class

    code is ypuj7q.

    o Once you join the class please send a confirmation email to [email protected].

    o Once SEAMOLEC get your confirmation then facilitator will add you into the group

    where you belong to.

    o The participants will be divided into 8 groups as follows:

    your left navigation.o Each group will be facilitated by facilitators and assist you to the depth of

    understanding about issues and challenges in PBL, PBL across subject, 21 century

    skills in PBL as well as integrating Edmodo in PBL.

    o Participants are expected to get actively involved in weekly activity during 1 month

    to achieve optimal goals in further face to face workshop.

    2. Face-to-face workshop on 21st

    Century Project Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL) for

    teachers

    This workshop will be held in three days and it will be conducted after online course. This

    phase is needed to enhance participants understanding in the 21st

    Century Project-based

    Learning (Across Subject) concept and implementation, to work together with their partnersin planning a pilot project for their students, and also to explore other tools that support

    their activities by integrating 21st

    century skills. Participants should present and share the

    result in online forum on the last day. Illustration of workshop activities is displayed as

    3. Pre-Test for Students Involved

    Prior to starting the project based learning, a Pre-test will be conducted to measure the

    amount of pre-existing knowledge on the project topic and to indicate to the student the

    learning level of the project. The pre-test is related to the topic of the project, which is

    Climate Change and will be covering different school subject, among others, Math,

    Biology, Geography and English. This test will be in the form of multiple choices and essays

    and will be conducted online using Edmodo.

    4. Implementation of 21st

    Century Project Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL)

    Schools have to implement a pilot project for one month, and should be across activities

    among students in other countries based on their PBL design agreed during online as well asduring the face to face workshop. SEAMOLEC Facilitators are going to assist and supervise

    during the pilot project conducted. At the end the Teachers have to make a report by using

    template provided and share this report to the forum.

    5. Post-Test for Students

    A post-test will be conducted to measure the learning as a result of the project

    implementation and to see the appropriateness of the learning process. Similar to the pre-

    test, the post test will be conducted online using Edmodo in the form of multiple choice and

    essays. The coverage of the test will be based on some school subjects, i.e. Math, Biology,

    Geography and English.

    6. Post Implementation of 21st

    Century Project Based Learning Model (Cross Subject PBL)

    At the end of the implementation of Project Based Learning, each participating school will

    join the international Online Seminar Conducted by SEAMOLEC and will have to present and

    share the result of the Project Based Learning Model implemented in their schools.

    SEAMOLEC will evaluate the result of this implementation based on some criteria, among

    others, the suitability of the PBL with the timeline, the teachers efforts in ensuring students

    learning, the teachers effort in supporting collaboration among students (schools) and the

    success of the project implementation. Awards will be rewarded to three best schools.

    1. Each country is suggested to involve at least 1 school within the country.

    2. Participants are geography, mathematics, biology, or English teachers for grade 8 grade 11

    (Junior High & Senior High)

    3. Participants have proficiency in IT minimum using office application, browser, and email.

    4. All programs held in English. Proficiency in English is needed.

    5. Participants will be required to bring their own laptop/notebook during the workshop.

    Venue of the F2F Workshop

    F2F workshop will be conducted in each country. Host country is suggested to provide venue of the

    workshop consist of:

    1. Class room for 20 participants or computer laboratory (if participants do not able to bring

    their own laptop/notebook).

    2. One LCD Projector.

    3. Whiteboard and markers.

    4. Internet connection for participants.

    5. Extension cable for participants laptop.

    6. Flipchart Paper and markers for group work (If possible)
