super online banking system超级网银The People’s Bank of China on Monday launched its “super online banking system”, enabling online real-time *interbank transfers and *balance *inquiries. Exact charges for the new system have yet to be finalized.

quote “We wanted to send you a soccer ball, but it wouldn’t fit through the hole, and you can’t play down there anyway.”— Carolina Lobos, in a message to her father Franklin Lobos, a former professional soccer player and one of 33 men trapped in a mining disaster in Chile. The mine collapsed three weeks ago. Miners are sheltering in a *refuge measuring 50 square meters connected to the surface by an 8-centimeter-wide hole through which rescuers deliver life-support supplies. The trapped men face a four-month underground ordeal while a rescue tunnel is dug.

Issues Digging out of sorrow

AN avalanche of mud, dirt and debris engulfed homes in Zhouqu county in Gansu on Saturday at midnight. It also buried survivors in inescapable sorrow.

The tragedy struck when rain-triggered mudslides ripped through streets and homes in Zhouqu county, of Gansu’s Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture. The death toll had risen to 337 by Monday night, with 1,148 others still missing.

There are several reasons behind the disaster: the county’s loose terrain; the Wenchuan earthquake that shook the mountains around Zhouqu; the drought and soil erosion since last winter; the torrential rain on Saturday night.

Forest fire's ripple effect extends globally PRESENT-DAY Moscow looks like this: Kremlin and golden church cupolas have disappeared behind a layer of smoke. Residents who haven’t fled the city wear protective masks or simply clutch wet rags to their faces. And drivers switch on their headlights in broad daylight.

The acrid haze has been caused by a massive forest fire that is both burning acres of land and causing a ripple effect across Europe.

Officials said Friday over 867 million square meters of woodland and peat bog were burning in at least 17 of the country’s 83 regions. So far, the fire has caused over 50 deaths.

Opinion Moral high ground for

teachers?

IT’S not easy being a college student these days. Spiraling tuition fees and living expenses, academic pressure, the stress of sorting out jobs and internships as well as campus relationships will all weigh heavily on the busy minds of young students.

Planners should marry sustainability with market economy SINCE it introduced a market economy in the early 1980s, China has developed rapidly and cities have risen up in many former rural areas. In many situations, China’s urban layouts have learned a lot from the West. The movement of rural workers into the city and the gradual transition from public to individualized transportation have resulted in city sprawl. However, the pattern of American sprawl that some Chinese cities modeled after has, over the past few decades, resulted in an unsustainable system of living that revolves around fossil fuel consumption.

Campus Life

HE may be more than 1,600km from Harbin, but Peng Yu, a Shijiazhuang senior high graduate, has already had a picture of what his life will be like at the Harbin Institute of Technology. He has already seen the excellent cyber cafe where he can play games online. He has seen the campus’ popular dating spots. He has even seen the bed he will sleep in.Rather than take the traditional campus tour and discovering its various delights with his fellow undergraduates, Peng has undertaken an online orientation. This is, after all, the digital age, and senior high graduates looking for the perfect college life are leaving nothing to chance with their preparations. As a result, university BBS, and social networking sites are popular places for students to prepare for college.

New horizon New warnings over online safety WHEN you’re surfing the Internet on your laptop from

your dorm or home, do you know your personal details are being gathered secretly? And would you be surprised to know the information may be sold cheaply to advertisers and marketers?

According to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal, all it takes is a tiny file in a computer–a single code consisting of a long series of numbers and letters–to record the computer user’s age, gender, location, favorite movies and hobbies.

Freshmen swarm into colleges with parents, the major force of luggage delivering.

Helicopter parents

Page 22: 21st century reading 1

ON his arrival at Beijing Normal University’s reception desk at the railway station, freshman Meng Xiang, 18, suddenly felt a little embarrassed that his parents were tagging along behind him with his luggage. But after he was *ushered into a small crowd waiting for the *shuttle bus to campus, his unease completely disappeared: the place was full of students being followed by parents with heavy luggage.

Recently, on campuses across the country, the number of parents has exceeded the number of freshers. Some universities even prepared accommodation for the many visiting parents. Some colleges, however, are not so considerate. When faced with a *swarm of parents, Beijing Jiaotong University stood by the rules printed in its freshman handbook, saying that parents “should relax and let students register by themselves so that they can cultivate their independence”.

Facing the invasion of the superbugs

A killer bug spreading across the globe like wildfire sounds like something out of a bad sci- fi film. But while this is still the stuff of fantasy, microbiologists are concerned about the news of an enzyme( 酶 ) with the potential to convert all bacteria into superbugs resistant to treatment.

New Delhi Metallo-1 (NDM-1) is already widespread in India and Pakistan, according to the Lancet Infectious Disease journal. There have also apparently been 50 cases in Britain.

Page 25: 21st century reading 1

So can we stay ahead of these superbugs? We talked to leading experts to discover what we can do to protect ourselves.

1. Use an antibacterial body wash/shampoo such as Hibiscrub (希必洁液 ) before, during and after a hospital stay.2. If you’re fitted with a catheter( 导管 ), ask for it to be removed as soon as clinically possible, says Professor Mervyn Bibb, a molecular microbiologist at the John Innes Institute, Norwich. ‘It is a potential source of infection.’3. Ask hospital staff and visitors to use antiseptic hand gel.4. Take your antibiotics as prescribed: If you don’t finish the course or take them at reduced dose there is a risk you won’t kill all the bacteria, says Professor Bibb. ‘Finishing the course will ensure all pathogens are killed. Taking less than the prescribed amount could lead to 。”

Page 26: 21st century reading 1

5. Watch for signs of redness, swelling and pain around wounds and report it to medical staff.6. At home, practise good hand hygiene. Wash your hands after going to the loo and before preparing food. Regularly clean door handles, light switches and flushes on loos. Avoid sharing towels. Be vigilant( 警惕的 ) about food hygiene: E. Coli( 大肠杆菌 ) can colonise meat products, such as burgers, so make sure you cook them thoroughly and they are not left bloody.
