Keynote  Presentations

Saturday  Spotlight  Presentation

Melinda  Kolk,  Tech  for  Learning  The  21st  Century  Classroom:  Where  the  3  R’s  Meet  the  4  C’s!  Our  world  is  changing  and  changing  rapidly.      A  21st  century  classroom  must  engage  and  energize  both  natives  and  non-‐natives,  preparing  all  students  to  be  active  participants  in  our  exciting  global  community.  Many  people  react  to  global  competition  with  fear  and  cry  out  for  a  renewed  focus  on  the  3  R’s  -‐  reading,  writing,  and  arithmetic.  But  in  order  to  fully  participate  in  today’s  global  community,  students  must  also  master  the  4  C’s  –  creativity,  critical  thinking,  communication,  and  collaboration.

Melinda Kolk is the Director of Professional Development at Tech4Learning, Inc., which publishes open-ended software tools and learning resources that support project-based learning. Melinda is the editor of Creative Educator magazine and the author of Teaching with Clay Animation. She has been helping educators implement project-based learning in their classrooms for over ten years, developing the ProjectLearn model and authoring the ProjectLearn project-building and project design materials at Recipes4Success.com. Melinda has made hundreds of presentations at educational technology conferences around the

United States, including ASCD, NSBA T+L, NECC, ILTCE, and more. She has been a featured speaker at the MACUL, VSTE, and MICCA conferences and was the keynote speaker at the 2004 VSTE Conference in Roanoke, Virginia. Melinda has also had articles on student technology projects published in Virginia's "VSTE Journal" and Australia's "The Educational Technology Guide." *See the Spotlight Presentation Saturday at either 8:10 a.m. or 10:10 a.m. in room B112.

84 So you have the latest anti-virus product, but are you really safe? Michael Moore, MBA, MCITP, MCSE., CCSD

What is a virus, worm or malware? Why would someone infect my computer? What can I do to protect my information? Every year, millions of systems are compromised through the single action of a person, even though the workstation had the latest software protection. These everyday actions not only expose personal information but can also expose an organization’s information to unauthorized access. In addition, these compromised systems are then used as launching pads to infect other computers and can diminish the ability to access network resources. In this presentation, we will discuss who is trying to infect your computer and why; the various types of threats to your computer; how these threats are being delivered; the tools used to defend against these threats; the underground digital economy; and finally a discussion on what is the best solution.
