Message from our DP As the term has gone along, I have had the opportunity to spend time in many classrooms and reflect on the fabulous learning environments we have at TBPS. Last week, I was fortunate to spend an hour with Mr Henley and 3H as they prepared to engage with a new online tool designed to give teachers detailed and timely information to personalise their teaching of reading. What struck me was the caring classroom culture and eagerness of the students to try new things. This is an aspect of our school that I hear about often from visiting teachers and reflects well on our school values.

Yarn Up

It was great to see parents and family members of our Aboriginal students at yesterday’s Yarn Up. The event was organised by our Aboriginal Education Officer, Sherree Morley, with the support of our Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Leigh Ridgeway. Ms Sawyer and I laid out our plans as a school community for supporting Aboriginal students and families, and teachers met with parents to discuss individual student learning. A big shout out to teachers who attended and Mr Beedon (our GA) for manning the BBQ. The afternoon had a great vibe and we look forward to building stronger partnerships with our Aboriginal

families in the interests of student learning and wellbeing.

I have received communication from the photo company that they hope to have the class and individual photos back to us in about three weeks. A further date for group photos will be advertised later in the year.

Staff Changes

Last Friday we said farewell (for now) to Mrs Nix as she begins her maternity leave and an exciting new chapter in her life. Mrs Burr and Mr Ray will be increasing their days at TBPS to cover Mrs Nix’s teaching duties. Best wishes Elli! Can’t wait to meet your little person.

Teaching and Learning

Earlier this week Mrs Walker and myself spent a few days working with the research team behind a state-wide program called Quality Teaching Rounds. Next task: Using our new learning to support teachers professional learning. Watch this space!!

REMEMBER…We celebrate Harmony Day on MONDAY 25th March (this Monday)…Send your child along in an orange t-shirt if you can find one!

Stage 2 News

This term we have been learning about living and non-living specimens and observing their features. Questions have been explored to think about what features make something ‘living’ and how we classify living and non-living things. The children have learnt about diagrams and labelling features of living things. Investigations of leaf litter and habitats is always interesting! We have also talked about why we need to be careful not to disturb the environment and habitats of animals and plants.

In History we have been looking at our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their traditional culture. We have examined how Aboriginal people acquired an intimate knowledge of physical features of the land, animals, plants and people and their connection to the land. We have looked at the Country and language as well as how they managed the environment according to ancient laws and customs that are recorded in Dreaming stories.

Our next stage assembly is on Tuesday 26th March at 2.30 in the hall where Bronze Awards will be presented.

Tell Them From Me: Student Survey

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

The survey will be completed by the students between Thursday 1st April – 5th April during school hours. An information letter has been sent home to families with students in years 4-6.

A parent Survey will take place later in the year during Term 3 which also provides valuable information for future planning.

BOOK WORM CORNER

Welcome to our first Book Worm Corner for 2019. What an incredibly busy term we have had with so much fun, learning and creativity going on in our beautiful library space.

Kindergarten Our kindergarten students have been getting to know the library space, enjoying borrowing picture books for home and loving story time. The students especially enjoyed the picture book ‘Maddie’s First Day by Penny Matthews and illustrated by Liz Anelli. The students were able to discuss the things they have in common with Maddie and her first day at school. Things like being nervous, making new friends and painting pictures are just some of the exciting topics our kindergarten students talked about.

WAKAKIRRI Our Wakakirri performance creation has begun! Stage Three students who have picked Wakakirri as an elective are super excited about our performance this year. We are recreating the fabulous story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. Students have chosen the parts they would like to play, worked out with the teachers our props, been madly collecting plastic bottles and painting our props, not to mention starting our dance. Students already are to be commended on their dedication and hard work and we are only four weeks in! The performance will be at Civic Theatre and on the 5th August, 2019. More information will be sent out in the coming weeks and months. We still need large piece of cardboard boxes and plastic bottles, 1.25 or 2 litre or 600ml. No milk bottles!
