Like Father, Like Son As we journey with God through our lives, the milestones of maturing are of-ten centred on a fresh and personal discovery of another facet of His charac-ter and Person. Simply learning new information can make it appear that we are growing, but real growth is about being transformed by growing closer in relationship with Jesus.

As we have been hearing a lot about our identity as sons, I have been reflecting on how I can make this mind blow-ing truth real in my life. After all, in the words of Leonard Ravenhill, “Of course you’ve been challenged, but have you been changed?”. I really want to grow in this area, because I know that being solid and secure in my identity is the right founda-tion on which to do everything in life. But how do we take this truth – our adoption as sons into God’s family – and see it change the way we live?

God showed me that I will only understand my identity as a son through knowing Him as Father. It all has to start with God; after all, we are only sons because He is the Father! So, I have been reading the Word, and discovering more of who the Father is. I have seen how Jesus related to His Father while on earth with absolute submission and joyful trust (Luke 22:42), and a com-plete obsession with the Father’s purposes! This week at work, I have been really conscious of how my entire life is wrapped up in the purposes of God, and everything I do, from advocating for a young refugee or doing some boring administration, is kingdom work. In every situation I have been able to ask God: What is your purpose here? What is your heart for this person? What needs to be done to advance the kingdom in this situation? I am all about my Father's business! (Luke 2:49) I have also read how we can call our Father ‘Abba’, or ‘Daddy’ (Romans 8:15) and as I have used these words in prayer, I have experienced a deeper level of intimacy with God. I have seen how we bear His likeness, like Father like son, and how we carry his authority in the family business (John 20:21). I have prayed for quite a few people this week, friends who need comfort, heal-ing, wisdom. I have remembered that I am a son, and have been able to take authority over situations and speak the Word of God into people's lives with power. Dave Emmett stated in his first message on the topic of identity, “The most important thing about you, is how you think about God.” I am convinced that as we pursue real, intimate relationship with God, allowing Him to reveal Him-self to us more and more, we cannot fail to be transformed into mature sons and daughters of the King. Happy growing!
