THOUGHTS ON THE DEATH PENALTY

First-degree murder is the intentional killing of a human being that is premeditated or planned. The Bible says, “Whoever sheds the blood of a man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has man been made” (Genesis 9:6). The Mosaic Law distinguishes between intentional killing and that which is accidental. The penalty for intentional killing is usually death. However, there are some notable cases in the Old Testament where death was not imposed by God, for example, the case of Cain, the first man to commit murder, who was spared. God also did not exact a life for a life from Moses, who killed an Egyptian who struck a Hebrew slave, or from King David, who arranged the death of the husband of the woman with whom he committed adultery.

In the Jewish Law, capital punishment was prescribed for crimes besides murder, such as for sodomy, blasphemy, and striking one’s parent. However, scholars point out that it was unusual for Jewish courts to actu-ally impose the death penalty for such crimes. When we look at the New Testament, Jesus spares a woman who was guilty of a capital crime. He also pardons his executioners. Consider the Apostle to the Gentiles, the great St. Paul, who before his conversion persecuted the Church and collaborated in the murder of St. Stephen. God did not require his life but eventually brought him to repentance and conversion. The New Testament ex-horts Christians not to repay evil with evil and to not seek vengeance for themselves. In summary, the Bible can be used to support an argument for and against the death penalty. Fortunately we have the Church, the divinely established interpreter of Scripture and Tradition, to guide us on this matter. The Church comes down firmly against capital punishment.

Last week I presented Archbishop Chaput’s argument against the death penalty. This week, with all due humility, I would like to add a few of my own thoughts.

Some people support the death penalty because they are convinced that first-degree murder warrants it. However, both as a citizen and a pastor I think our society needs to look beyond what is strictly deserved and consider whether the imposition of capital punishment causes more harm than good. It seems to me that human life is so precious that lethal force ought to be used only as a last resort to safeguard the public. A person in custody is no longer a threat, as long as he or she is probably secured, and therefore there is no need to exe-cute him or her.

One of the purposes of punishment for crime is to balance the scales of justice by exacting retribution. It seems to me that lifelong incarceration is punishment enough. It is not an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, but for some it is a living death. From the perspective of faith, we know that perfect justice will only be achieved in the next life, where no one will escape God’s justice. Moreover, there may be some good to come out of a long prison stay, such as repentance, reconciliation and penance. No one in this life is beyond God’s reach for salvation. Why send an unrepentant murderer to hell? If he remains in his sin he will get there on his own. I think of Alessandro Sereneilli, the man who murdered St. Maria Goretti, who reconciled with Maria’s mother and lived the rest of his life living in a monastery and doing penance. His heart was hard, and had he been executed in the first few years after the murder he would have died unrepentant. It is the will of God that even the worst of sinners repent and be saved. As Christians, our first commitment is that God’s will be done. The longer a per-son lives the more opportunities there are for conversion.

One of the negative consequences of capital punishment is its effect on the executioners. Think about it – at the moment of execution, the condemned is helpless. To put a defenseless man to death can sear a per-son’s conscience or make him more callous. Execution is not an act of self-defense. Furthermore, capital pun-ishment as it is applied in our country is a direct attack on the healthcare profession. The presence of a physi-cian or healthcare worker is usually required, especially if the execution is by lethal injection. Also, someone in medicine has to be legally competent to sign the death certificate. The American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists have objected to the participation of their members in state executions. I cannot see how it is beneficial to our society to involve professionals who have dedicated their lives to healing to assist at executions.

In the United States of America we have the means of protecting society and administering justice with-out imposing capital punishment. As for its usefulness as a deterrent, it would seem that the possibility of a life sentence for murder is powerful enough. The likelihood of being caught is probably the greatest deterrent to crime. But even if capital punishment were an effective deterrent, this result could not of itself transform an exe-cution into something good.

The appeal to mercy is good enough for many people to oppose capital punishment. But there are rea-sons to oppose it besides an appeal to mercy. The negative effects of capital punishment on those involved in applying it and on our society in general are reason enough to oppose it.

Live the Liturgy

"We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets!" In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus notes that it requires moral strength to enter the kingdom of God. It's not mere proximity to righteousness that saves. Rubbing elbows with the righteous is not the same as being truly holy ourselves. Unfortunately, we can have this attitude in many areas. It's easy to see who may seem "first" in the eyes of the world. This occurs in our workplaces and among our public figures. It can also happen in our schools, local parishes, and the larger Church. For some of us, the temptation to have the popularity and prestige rub off on us can be fairly strong. If only we are in the right place with the right people, surely others will associate us with what they possess! But salvation is worked out in each individual life. It is our task not merely to show up, but to be transformed. And the truly transformed may not be everyone we expect. "People will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south... some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." Some who seem first in reputation now may be last in the kingdom of God. Others who appear now on the furthest fringes of society - but better imitate the lowly holiness of Jesus - will be first in his kingdom. What are your concerns? Proximity and reputation? Or prayerful righteousness?

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

From Deacon Ron Lewis….Hello! I hope you stayed cool over the summer! It would seem that this summer, the Lord did indeed set the earth on fire! As the summer comes to an end I would like to remind you that the RCIA program will begin on September 25th. With that in mind, on Wednesday, September 18th there will be a "MEET & GREET" in the Parish Center/Church lower level for all those interested in entering the RCIA program. At the meeting which will begin at 7 PM, we will discuss the program and distribute the schedule for instruction. Please contact me, Deacon Ron Lewis, at either [email protected] or by phone at 302-547-8586 with any questions or if you know someone who would like to register for RCIA before the meeting. Let us be the straw with which the Lord sets the world on fire!

LABOR DAY MASS

Monday, September 2nd 9:00 am Mass

Please join us!

Note: There will be no Eucharistic Adoration on Labor Day, no 6:30 am Mass, and the Parish Office will be closed.

Through August 18 the 2019 Annual Parish Appeal is doing well. Our goal is $150,000. In the first forty-two weeks of the 2019 Appeal two hun-dred and eighty-two (283) families have committed more than $142,699 of which $130,109 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the Parish and will ena-ble us to fund one necessary project. This project is to establish an emer-gency fund for unbudgeted, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate replacement of the church roof. The initial contribution to this emergency fund will be one-third of the moneys collected in the 2019 Parish Appeal. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. You may also use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

Collection August 18, 2019 $12,060 Includes estimated $4,750 E-Giving

- 34% Participation

Avg. Weekly Collection 2019/2020

Estimated Wkly Expenses 2019/20

$13,517$13,855

Thank you for your continued support!

The income estimated for our 2019-2020 fiscal year budget has been adjusted to reflect recent historical income numbers. This fiscal year our income goal is $722,000 for the Offer-tory collection. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is ap-proaching 18 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operat-ing costs need to be addressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal re-sponsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

Who do you say that I am?

Recent polls say that an alarming amount of Catholics don’t

believe in the true presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Don’t be unbelieving, but believe!! If you come before the

Blessed Sacrament for 15 minutes a day, you will believe

and be transformed!!!

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THOSE OVER 70 ½ WITH AN IRA

When you paid your 2018 Federal Income Tax were you able to itemize your deductions? No! Did you have charitable expens-es which you were unable to deduct? Yes! Did you know an indi-vidual 70½ years old or older may make a charitable contribution from the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA and reduce their taxable income without itemizing? Take ad-vantage of the tax laws in 2019. Talk to your financial adviser, your plan administrator or your tax accountant. Some of your fel-low parishioners are using this part of the federal tax law.

Remember: Individuals and eligible spouses can make an IRA charitable rollover (up to $100,000) to ABVM Parish and not have that transfer count towards their taxable income in the year that they made the charitable gift. Charitable rollover amounts will count toward your required minimum distribution. By avoiding the recognition of taxable income, you may also have less of your Social Security income subject to income tax.

PLEASE RETURN YOUR TICKET STUBS BY AUGUST 26TH.

Mission Appeal Weekend—August 24/25

This weekend, we welcome Marianist missionary, Father Da-vid Fleming, S.M. to our parish. The Marianists have been serving the poorest of the poor in India and Eastern Africa for decades. Through education, job training and empowerment programs, they help people out of desperate poverty and into lives of hope and dignity. Archbishop Charles Chaput is hop-ing everyone in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be remind-ed of their baptismal call to be Missionary in this Extraordi-nary Year of Mission through October 2019. To contribute to the Marianist missionaries, please use the envelope provided in the pews this weekend, or if you give through Faith Direct, add gift under icon for “Summer Missionary Appeal”. Your prayers and your generous support are truly appreciated!

This week we celebrate two saints, a mother and son: St. Monica and St. Augustine. As a young Christian wom-an, St. Monica was married to a pagan. Early in their marriage, he was bitter and critical. After nearly 20 years, Mon-ica's holy example led to his conversion to Christianity. In the meantime, Au-gustine was a teenager beginning to live a wild life of self-indulgent excess. This lifestyle would continue into his adulthood. Like with her husband, Monica prayed and fasted for the con-version of her son. Augustine met an-other future saint, the bishop Ambrose of Milan, who greatly influenced his perspective on life. Augustine was bap-tized a Christian! Augustine later be-came a bishop and one of the most influential thinkers in Christian history. How's that for the power of patience and intercessory prayer?
