UAE-Swiss Research Day
Dear Participant,
It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the campus of EPFL (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne), on the occasion of the UAE‐Swiss Research Day 2011. We are delighted to extend a particularly warm welcome to the academic community of the UAE, who brings a very special relevance to this event. EPFL is a research‐based university of science and technology, with a significant international presence on campus: students, researchers, staff and faculty. We hope that your stay with us will be both stimulating and enjoyable, as we open the UAE‐Swiss Research Day.
This is the first time such an event takes place between the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, and constitutes one of the cornerstones of the Emirati‐Swiss Friendship Forum 2011. The participation of leading academic institutions in the UAE and in Switzerland has been made possible by the patronage and generous support of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and by the support of the individual institutions in both countries.
The UAE‐Swiss Research Day gathers the next generation of leaders from both countries: graduating students across the UAE, MSc and PhD students in Switzerland, scientists, researchers, and faculty. The conference highlights their individual research activities, as well as graduate‐research conducted by Swiss institutions in collaboration with the UAE; this includes the activities of EPFL Middle East in Ras Al Khaimah, or the collaboration between the University of Geneva and Zayed University. The fifty plus contributions presented at this conference cover a wide range of topics, and collectively represent a trans‐disciplinary approach to the future of energy and sustainability: sustainable design and architecture, smart energy management, renewable energies, governance and policies, environmental approaches. All these graduate‐level research projects and technological innovations are shaping, today, the future of Energy and Sustainability – two of the most pressing and important challenges for this century and for generations to come.
We look forward to the conference and to your scientific contributions, which will make this event a success.
Sincerely,
Franco Vigliotti Dean of EPFL Middle East Benoît Deveaud‐Plédran EPFL Dean of Research Stephan Morgenthaler EPFL Dean of International relations

Practical information Preparing posters and oral presentations Language The language of the conference is English. Poster format and posting The space available for each poster is A0 in portrait orientation. We suggest you also bring an electronic copy with you, alongside with your poster. You will have time to set up your poster before the afternoon session of 22 June. Posters should be retrieved after the poster session ends around 17h30. All abstracts will be made available on line on the website www.epfl.ae, and will also be provided to the participants on a USB key, as part of the conference material. Poster awards Voting
All visitors and participants to the poster session will have a chance to vote for three posters from the UAE (gold=3 points, silver=2 points and bronze=1 point), and the same for three posters from Switzerland. Voting cards and instructions will be included in the conference package you will receive upon arriving. The overall top‐scoring UAE poster and Swiss poster will be selected for the awards. The laureates will be informed immediately after the poster session concludes. Awards
The two award‐winning posters will be honored at the gala dinner of the Emirati‐Swiss Friendship Forum, that same evening (upon invitation only). They will receive the award, and get a chance to present orally their project to the guests of the gala dinner, in a couple minutes and without support. The two award‐winning posters will be displayed on 23 June at the Polydôme, as well as the second and third best, for each country. Oral presentations on 23 June Each oral presentation occupies a 13‐minute slot: 10 minutes of presentation, and 3 minutes for questions. Oral presentations can be supported by powerpoint or pdf presentations. A computer will be available. If you require a specific software or set‐up for your presentations, please contact Hilary Mc Cormack by 15 June. Presenting individuals are expected to upload (USB key) their files onto the computer during just before the beginning of their session.
