22 August 2019 Newsletter No.23

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to all our children who dressed up on Wednesday for Book Week. It was wonderful to see the children get so involved, and of course, this can’t happen

without your support. I hope that those parents and pre-schoolers who joined us, enjoyed the parade.

Each level has also created a door display that reflects a book, so come in and have a

look around. We have some incredibly talented students and teachers. The children are also fortunate to have had two authors come and talk about their

experiences. I hope this inspires your child to write or illustrate their own stories.

If you are free tomorrow afternoon, drop by at 2.50pm, ready for a 3pm start, as the

children enjoy our annual read around. I would like to extend a big thank you to Maria Lontos, Gordana Jordanovska, and the

whole staff, for their efforts in making book week such an enjoyable event for the children.

Condolences

On behalf of the Holy Name school community, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Skye (Prep PM) and her mother Holly, on the recent loss of Skye’s father

through a road accident.

Father’s Day On Friday August 30th, all Fathers or important males are invited to a sausage sizzle

which will be commencing at 3:30. This is an opportunity for them to spend some quality time with their child/children that attend Holy Name. A special soccer match

will be organised. Please see the flyer sent home today, for further information.

Head Lice Alert

We have had some cases of head lice reported. Please check your child’s hair at least once a week, and if you see eggs or live lice, treat your child immediately. Children

with head lice must not be at school until treatment has commenced. You must be vigilant in following the instructions on the treatment leaflet. In most cases, you will

be instructed to do at least one follow up treatment. All eggs should be removed from the hair shaft. It only takes one or two eggs to survive the treatment, for the whole

infestation to start again….. very quickly! Note: Head lice DON’T have knees or wings! They crawl very quickly when children

put their heads together. Eggs look like dandruff, but are stuck to the hair shaft. (If you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, see Mrs Fraser in the office).

PRESTON REGIONAL DEBATING

On Tuesday 20th August, twelve Year 6 students participated in the 2019 Preston Regional Debating Day at St Raphael’s Primary School. This day was a great experience

for the students to apply their learnings about persuasive writing and improving their speaking and listening skills in a formal debate setting. All students had the opportunity

to participate in a formal debate and also work together in a collaborative setting. Although it was a challenging experience, the learning to participate in rebuttals and

expanding arguments was invaluable. I would like to congratulate all our students for their efforts and determination to improve their debating skills.

5/6 RESERVOIR CUP BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Tomorrow, twenty Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the Reservoir Cup

on. The first game will be at 9:30am, with the finals taking place at 2:00pm.

IT’S BOOK WEEK!!!

Holy Name has been enthusiastically celebrating Book Week this week, and what an amazing week it has been!!!

We have shared some fantastic books, made some incredible artwork, paraded in our best costumes, listened to two talented authors and voted for our favourite picture books. Some of us have even challenged our brain with some tricky competitions!!!

I would like to thank EVERYONE in our school community for being so enthusiastic and energised this week. It has been so wonderful to see the love of stories come alive in our school, and the talents of each and every one of us shine, as we have participated in various activities.

However, the week is not over yet! Don’t forget that our annual Read-Around is happening tomorrow afternoon at 3pm – (please arrive at 2.50pm)! Students are invited to wear their house colours and bring their favourite stories to share in their house groups. Parents, grandparents, siblings and special friends are invited to join us for the last part of the day. Please enter through the office, where you will be escorted to the designated area by our school leaders and house captains.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

The Challenge closes on Friday 6th September! If you haven’t finished reading, please do before then.

Here are this week’s Challenge Champions! Congratulations to:

*These students will be presented with their Certificates at Monday’s Assembly*

So far, the children have read books, which is fantastic!

Parents: Please note: If your Grade 3 to 6 child wants to ‘meet the challenge requirements’, the challenge books they read must be from their grade level

or above. For example, if your child is in Grade 3 or 4, then their challenge

books must be from the 3-4, or 5-6 level, not Prep-2.

PREP SCHOOL NURSING PROGRAM - 2019

Dear Prep parents, In your child’s bag today, is an important notice and questionnaire to all Prep students

from the School Nursing Program, which is offered by the Department of Education and Training. Completion and return of the questionnaire allows the opportunity for your

child to have a health assessment by the Visiting Primary School Nurse. Please return the questionnaire even if you do not wish your child to be assessed by the School

Nurse. Just tick ‘No” in the red consent block on the form. Please return the form to your child’s classroom teacher by next Friday 30th August

PREP 2020 ‘I’M GOING TO HOLY NAME’ T-SHIRTS Have you collected your FREE t-shirt yet? If not, please come to the office to collect

one for your Prep 2020 child – they come in size 6 & 8.

NUDE FOOD DAYS FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2019

We only have TWO more Nude Food Days - Tuesday 3 September & Tuesday 3 December.

SMS MESSAGES Dear parents,

As you may have noticed, we are now using Caremonkey to SMS you with generic ‘head

bump’ notifications and other regular SMS messages. Unfortunately, Caremonkey does NOT allow you to respond via SMS.

FOUND On the last day of Term 2, a large size ‘almost brand new’ windcheater was found.

Unfortunately, the owner didn’t put their name on it. If you lost yours, please contact Mrs Fraser in the office.

ALSO If anyone in the Prep area picked up a ‘fur jacket’ on the 100 days of Prep day, please return to PF.

ACADEMY UNIFORM

If you place an order online (our password is – reservoir), or by phone with your credit card, Academy will deliver the item to the school, (usually ONLY once a week), at no

extra cost to you.

Privacy Matters If you care about the share, you’ll protect your privacy, no matter what. Regularly

check your privacy settings on social media, and always think before you post. It’s amazing where data ends up – usually all over the internet.

OUR BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

OPERATES IN THE SCHOOL’S ILC

What we’ve been up to this last week……… We are so excited about this week's Book Week.

Everyone wore some super-colourful and vibrant costumes on dress up day. It is great to see so many book characters coming alive through the children's

costumes. Some of our favourite costumes are Harry Potter, Disney princesses, Where's Wally and superhero Marvel characters.

On Tuesday afternoon, Abbey, Eliza and Laura helped Helen cook some yummy pancakes.

Just to remind parents that St Raphael's holiday program has closed, the nearest holiday program in our area is Ivanhoe Girls Grammar. Please go to our website if you

are interested in making a booking for your child/ren.

Parents….if you would like your child to attend for a trial, the first session is free. Come up and meet us and have a look at our program!

Reminder To enrol your child/ren in our program, or to view fees, go to
