A F H B ... Advent moves us closer to the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Emmanuel, God with Us. As we move into this sacred and holy feast, we are aware of the gifts of the past and the promises of our future. As I mentioned with gratitude how Betsy Lazar and Daniel Maul have been such gifts to us through these years, we are also gifted with people who will step up and continue to do the tasks that these two Staff Members have done so well. Denise Garcia, our Secretary, will assume the Business Manager Tasks and take on some additional workload in the process. She has graciously accepted this opportunity and Betsy has spent the last few weeks training and assisting Denise to move into this role with a seamless transition. This shift has begun as of Friday, December 20. I ask you to support Denise is this new transition as she forges ahead and moves into her new role in this coming year. As Daniel has been so attentive to our program for Religious Education, Lourdes Santiago has graciously accepted a position as our Religious Education Coordinator. She has worked tirelessly with Daniel and has been a vital part of our program from meetings to retreats to teaching and coordinating the many aspects that are involved in running and coordinating a successful program. We anticipate a few hiccups as we move into this transition, but Lourdes has the faith and the heart, as well as our trust, to continue to build and guide our program as we look forward to our year with hope. It is a time of transition at our parish but also with our church as we move into the next planning phase for Renew My Church. Many great things are possible as we place our hope in Him. May this new birth of our Savior be a sign of new birth for our community as we weather the changes and face the future with possibility, promise and hope. Happy Christmas to all our Parish Family! Farewell words from Our Director of Religious Education

Every Advent, when asked the meaning and purpose of this church season, students invariably respond that it’s a time to prepare for Christmas. But, I’ve always wondered what that even means. Do we really need a liturgical season to remind us to decorate our homes and put up our trees? Don’t our stores and commercials already do that, immediately after Halloween? If the students mean a kind of spiritual preparation, I also wonder what personal goals are unique to Advent or Christmas. For what should we be striving, during this time? Sometimes, I’ll hear that we are to prepare ourselves to “bring Jesus to life” in our own lives. Well, I don’t know how to do that. I’m a sinner, not a saint. And, I’m rarely prepared to do anything. Rather, I often find myself having to adapt quickly to changing situations, which feel beyond my control. This hasn’t been the case for me, however, over the past nine and a half years. Over that period of time, this parish has provided me with stability, consistency, and reliability, and I’m very grateful. It has been a joy and honor to minister to the children and families of IHM. I now, however, am being called by God to leave, and I’m really not prepared. In a way, even though I sought out new employment, this change too feels beyond my control. I try to cooperate with God, and now I’m heading, with my family, to West Virginia, to be the Director of Faith Formation and Mission for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. It will feel strange; I’ll be a bit scared for a while; and I’ll miss so many people, includ-ing the people of this parish. I thank you for your support, acceptance, patience, forgiveness, and love. I sincerely hope that you’ve felt my reciprocation. My last day at the parish will be January 5th. Then, I’ll bid you all farewell, God’s blessings, and the hope that we will see each other again, one day. I think Advent is about reminding ourselves that we never really know God’s plan: “we know not the day nor the hour.” All we can do, in hopes of achieving our own goals, is to put ourselves faithfully into God’s hands, trust in our Lord, and open our hearts and minds to the movement of the Holy Spirit. It takes a lot of trust. We have to reject fear, and always remember that God will work it out. This, to me, is Advent trust. Peace to you all, and Merry Christmas.

A F S N ... Adviento nos acerca a la celebración del nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros. A medida que avanzamos en esta fiesta sagrada y santa, somos conscientes de los dones del pasado y las promesas de nuestro futuro. Como mencioné con gratitud cómo Betsy Lazar y Daniel Maul han sido un regalo durante estos años, también estamos dotados de personas que darán un paso adelante y continuarán haciendo las tareas que estos dos Miembros del Personal han hecho tan bien. Palabras de Despedida de parte de Nuestro Director de Educación Religiosa

Cada Adviento, cuando se les pregunta el significado y el propósito de esta temporada de la iglesia, los estudiantes inva-riablemente responden que es tiempo de prepararse para la Navidad. Pero siempre me he preguntado qué significa eso. ¿Realmente necesitamos una temporada litúrgica que nos recuerde decorar nuestros hogares y poner nuestros árboles? ¿Qué nuestras tiendas y centros comerciales no hacen eso, inmediatamente después de Halloween? Si los estudiantes quieren decir una especie de preparación espiritual, también me pregunto qué objetivos personales son exclusivos de Adviento o Navidad. ¿Por qué deberíamos esforzarnos durante este tiempo? A veces, escucho que debemos prepararnos para "dar vida a Jesús" en nuestras propias vidas. Bueno, no sé cómo hacer eso. Soy un pecador, no un santo. Y rara a la vez estoy preparado para hacer algo. Más bien, a menudo me encuentro teniendo que adaptarme rápidamente a situacio-nes y cambios, que se sienten fuera de mi control. Sin embargo, este no ha sido mi caso en los últimos nueve años y medio. Durante ese período de tiempo, esta parroquia me ha proporcionado estabilidad, consistencia y confiabilidad, y estoy muy agradecido. retiring this month. When I retired from the bank and came to work here, it was a pleasure to find many customers that were parishioners. I’ve very much enjoyed working with Fr. Jim, staff and you for almost 9 years. Deciding to retire is always difficult, but my husband and I are both looking

forward to it. As I leave, I will pass my responsibilities as

Business Manager over to Denise Garcia, our secretary, whom I am sure will do a fine job.

Decidir jubilarse siempre es difícil, pero mi esposo y yo estamos ansiosos por hacerlo.

Cuando me vaya, pasaré mis responsabilidades como Gerente Comercial a Denise García, nuestra secretaria, de

quien estoy seguro hará un buen trabajo. Por favor manténgame en sus oraciones como yo lo haré en

From Our Director of Music and Liturgy, I hope this finds everyone well and enjoying the Christmas season. It has been over two years now since I've had the pleasure of working for IHM and the time has flown by. This past fall has been unusual - most of you know I suffered a broken jaw back in September, but I'm happy to report that my jaw has healed and I'm back to nor-mal. I look forward to another wonderful Christmas season at IHM and greatly appreciate everyone's help - it takes the effort of many individuals to make the season what it is, many of whom work behind the scenes, so I'd like to make sure everyone knows that they are noticed and appreciated. I'd also like to take a moment to say goodbye to Betsy Lazar and Daniel Maul. They will both be very missed, but I am happy for and wish them well as they enter a new and ( hopefully ) exciting chapter of their lives. Best, Jacob Adams

De Nuestro Director de Música y Liturgia, Espero que se encuentren todos bien y que estén disfrutan-do de la temporada Navideña. Han pasado más de dos años desde que tuve el placer de trabajar para IHM y el tiempo ha pasado volando. El pasado otoño ha sido inusual - la mayoría de ustedes saben que sufrí una fractura de mi mandíbula en Septiembre, pero estoy feliz de informarles que ha sanado y que he vuelto a la normalidad. From Our Parish Secretary, Greetings! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas Season along with their loved ones! As Father Jim states in his article, I will be taking on the additional Business Manager Tasks. I am grateful for the confidence and the support he has shown me to fill in this role... I am more than happy to accept this new task at hand. I can still be reached at extension 110 for anything you may need. I ask for everyone's prayers and patience as we move forward in this transition. 7 years have gone by in the blink of an eye! In that time I have grown to care for the people of this wonderful community, Fr. Jim, and our staff. I hate to say good bye to my coworkers but I have enjoyed working and learning so much from both. IHM Christmas Posada The Hispanic community here at IHM would like to invite you to their end of Holiday gathering, better known as a “Posada”. A time of gathering, delicious food, music and fun for all ages. This celebration will be held on, Monday, December 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. in the school gym. At this time they are also asking for your help. Our Spanish volunteers will be in the vestibule of church after 10:30 a.m. mass this Sunday with a sign up sheet to sign up those interested in donating or bringing a dish to share for that night. If you have any questions, please contact Denise at ext. 110. Everyone is most welcome. Please join us!

Posada Navideña en IHM La comunidad hispana aquí en IHM le hace la cordial invitación a celebrar su Posada Anual. Un momento de acogimiento, con comida deliciosa, música, y diversión para todas la edades. Esta celebración se llevara a cabo el, Lunes, 23 de Diciembre, a las 7:00 p.m. en el gimnasio de la escuela. También se solicita su cooperación para este evento.
