Cinema can be a hard sell in a World Cup summer. Although sunny weather can be a hazard in itself, introduce football into the mix and times can be even tougher.

In 2014, when Belmont had only just joined the Filmhouse family, the World Cup in Brazil began in earnest and a fairly fallow period followed, even though to memory the weather wasn’t that nice (research suggests we had a very wet August). A similar pattern can often follow across the industry. There’s a reluctance to programme against the likes of a World Cup. Many summer blockbusters have been released already, leaving the films which either can thrive in their absence, or appeal to a more specialist audience.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is likely such a film and we’re pleased to have it at Belmont, given the spectacular success of the first instalment. As is Ocean’s 8, a reimagining of the Soderbergh/Clooney romps with a stellar all-woman cast - including Bullock, Blanchett, Bonham-Carter and Rihanna.

Sicario, one of the best crime thrillers of the last few years, also gets a sequel, as we delve deeper into Benicio del Toro’s Alejandro Gillick in Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Stefano Sollima takes the reigns from Denis Villeneuve, but expect the same tightly plotted, dark and violent tale as 2015’s original. In a similar vein, Fatih Akin (The Cut, Head-On) returns with German-Turkish thriller In the Fade, starring Diane Kruger, which tackles a woman’s loss and pursuit of justice after her husband and son are killed in a terrorist act. Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme provides the score.

Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney and Mary Shelley by Haifaa al-Mansour (director of the fabulous Wadjda) are also shown shortly after their UK Premieres at Edinburgh International Film Festival. Lord Byron features in Mary Shelley, which, as is tradition, allows us to tie at least one of the films back to Aberdeen. Another film worth mentioning is McQueen - not about Steve, but fashion designer Alexander. It is wholly appropriate, in a World Cup summer, to feature someone else who has a hand of God…

All from 22 June, by which point England will have played their first game, to either your pain or pleasure. And you’d think that would be it. You’d think it would be all over, but turn the page for full film listings. Read to the end. it is now.

Rupert Everett writes/directs/stars in this moving depiction of the tumultuous last days of Oscar Wilde, a man who remained uncompromising even as his life was compromised. Released from prison following his conviction for ‘gross indecency’, the result of his very public affair with Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Colin Morgan), Wilde lives in exile in Naples and Paris, his eventful life flooding back in a series of flashbacks. A moving reminder of the shame society cast on those who dared display their desires openly, and the hypocrisy that this same society would tolerate homosexuality as long as it was hidden.

Roland Emmerich • USA 1996 • 2h25m • 12A - Contains moderate threat, violence. • Cast: Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Mary mcDonnell, Judd hirsch, randy Quaid.

Big budget sci-fi disaster movies don’t get more ‘90s than Independence Day. Roland Emmerich - who would go on to make Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down - borrowed plenty from The War of the Worlds, Alien and The Day the Earth Stood Still to make this enduringly popular summer blockbuster about the human race’s daring last stand against a race of invading aliens. A satisfying, action-packed movie that doesn’t ask for too much effort from its audience and offers plenty of fun moments in return.

Rob Reiner • USA 1987 • 1h38m • PG - Contains mild fantasy violence and language • Cast: Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Wallace Shawn, Peter Falk.

When the one true love of her life is killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts, Buttercup blindly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck. But the Prince is planning to incite war by assassinating Buttercup and blaming foreign agents. Yet even as the Prince’s trio of oddballs kidnap Buttercup, a mysterious man in black is in pursuit...

Whether it be cult classics, nostalgic sci-fi, cheesy action flicks, comedy masterpieces or films we just love, grab a sofa or bean bag and kick back with some of the best loved and unique pieces of cinematic history.

Alex Proyas • USA 1994 • 1h42m • 18 - Contains strong language and violence. • Cast: Brandon Lee, Michael Wincott, Ernie Hudson, rochelle Davis, Bai ling.

The Crow is the macabre tale of rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), who is murdered by a gang, only to be mysteriously resurrected again a year after his death. With a solitary crow as his guide, Draven embarks on a vengeful crusade across the crumbling city against the gang’s vicious leader, Top Dollar (Michael Wincott). A dark fantasy - based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel - that has gained eternal cult status due to the accidental death of Lee during filming.

CrUEL INTENTIONSSat 21 Jul at 7.30pm

Roger Kumble • USA 1999 • 1h37m • English, Vietnamese and French with English subtitles • 15 - Contains strong language, moderate sex scenes and drug use. • Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, louise fletcher.

Two wealthy and conniving step-siblings, Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), agree to a dangerous wager of seduction and revenge after Kathryn is humiliated by an ex. Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, the deliciously cynical Cruel Intentions relocates the story to a group of wealthy New York teens and boasts a who’s-who of late ‘90s teen idols in its cast - including Gellar, Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Tara Reid and Joshua Jackson.

DONNIE DArkOSun 29 Jul at 7.30pm

Richard Kelly • USA 2001 • 1h53m • 15 - Contains strong language and psychological horror. • Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze.

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a typical American teen - a smart boy with a nice family and friends. Donnie is also, however, a little bit strange. When a jet engine crashes through the ceiling, narrowly missing him, a monstrous rabbit called Frank appears to him, telling him he must fulfil his destiny - and that there’s no time to lose. He embarks on an increasingly strange series of actions which startle his teachers, scare his parents and amaze his friends. Surreal, imaginative and enticingly dark, Donnie Darko is a wickedly intelligent fantasy.

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1954 • 1h54m • Digital • PG - Contains mild violence • Cast: James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter.

Jimmy Stewart, immobilised in his apartment by a broken leg and aided by his girlfriend (Grace Kelly at her most Vogue-coverish), takes to watching the inhabitants across the courtyard, first with binoculars, later with his camera. He thinks he witnesses a murder... Quite aside from the violation of intimacy, which is shocking enough, Hitchcock has nowhere else come so close to pure misanthropy, nor given us so disturbing a definition of what it is to watch the ‘silent film’ of other people’s lives, whether across a courtyard or up on a screen...

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1958 • 2h8m • Digital • PG - Contains mild threat and references to suicide. • Cast: James Stewart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes, tom helmore, henry Jones.

Bernard Herrmann’s spiralling score is a perfect match for Hitchcock’s portrait of a man teetering on the edge of emotional instability. John ‘Scotty’ Ferguson (James Stewart) is a retired cop turned private detective hired to follow his old friend’s errant wife Madeleine (Kim Novak), who unwittingly falls in love with her and is devastated when she commits suicide. On meeting an identical woman, and racked with guilt for not having been able to help Madeleine (due to his vertigo), Scotty becomes obsessed... Screening from a new digital restoration.

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1940 • 2h10m • Digital • PG - Contains mild horror, threat and sex references • Cast: Laurence Olivier, Joan fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson, Nigel Bruce.

A young woman (Joan Fontaine) meets enigmatic and temperamental widower Maxim DeWinter (Laurence Olivier) in Monte Carlo, and on a whim marries him. He takes her home to foggy, rainy Cornwall, where he owns Manderley, a rambling country manor house, and the new Mrs DeWinter begins to grow nervous and suspicious: Did he have something to do with his first wife’s untimely death? Atmospheric and moody, Rebecca is a masterpiece of style and substance, an extended meditation on how the dead haunt the living.

Alfred hitchcockWe celebrate the newly restored 60th anniversary edition of Vertigo - swirling onto our screens - with a season of films by the Master of Suspense...

Vertigo is perfectly complemented by the voyeuristic drama Rear Window, starring Stewart as the peeping tom who thinks he’s seen a killing, and the mistaken identity thriller North by Northwest.

Another pair of films showcase Hitchcock’s fondness for the work of Daphne du Maurier - first with the 1940 adaptation of her classic novel Rebecca and then his re-imagining of her short story The Birds, starring the one-and-only Tippi Hedren. Rounding off this season is a truly underrated gem starring Sean Connery - Marnie, screening in early August.

Enjoy these films on the big screen and keep an eye out for seagulls as you leave the cinema...

Afred Hitchcock • USA 1963 • 1h59m • Digital • 15 - Contains moderate threat and horror • Cast: Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica tandy, Veronica Cartwright.

By the time of his last Daphne du Maurier adaptation, Hitchcock was so established (and sure of himself ) that he readily relocated her story about a Cornish farm labourer’s family responding to avian attacks to wealthy northern California. Though Evan Hunter’s script expands the tale, the film drops the novelist’s tentative explanation for the apocalyptic events, becoming Hitchcock’s most rigorously abstract study of the psychology of fear - a quality enhanced by the non-musical electronic score supervised by regular collaborator Bernard Herrmann.

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1964 • 2h10m • Digital • 15 - Contains domestic and sexual threat • Cast: Tippi Hedren, Sean Connery, Diane Baker, martin Gabel, louise latham.

A pathological liar and compulsive thief (Tippi Hedren) is befriended by her latest victim, Mark Rutland (Sean Connery). Despite his sincere love, dashing looks and wealth, some deep-seated neurosis makes her emotionally inaccessible, causing him to search her past for an explanation. This is Connery’s American film debut, and he portrays his character’s fascination with Marnie with a conviction that allows the psychological turmoil of the young woman to emerge. Hedren’s performance as the deeply conflicted and emotionally scarred woman walks the fine line favoured by Hitchcock, balanced between an icy sexuality and emotional fragility. One of Hitchcock’s most underrated and underappreciated films.

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1959 • 2h16m • Digital • PG - Contains mild violence and sex references • Cast: Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James mason, leo G Carroll, Jessie royce landis.

North by Northwest treads a bizarre tightrope between sex and repression, nightmarish thriller and urbane comedy. Cary Grant is truly superb as the light-hearted advertising executive who’s abducted, escapes, and is then hounded across America trying to find out what’s going on, and slowly being forced to assume another man’s identity. With a sizzling love interest in the form of Eva Marie Saint, James Mason on top form as a suave villain, and another thrilling score by Bernard Herrmann, it has all the ingredients of a classic.
