PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Over the last fortnight, students have been involved in many learning opportunities outside of the

classroom;

-assisting at primary school Cross-Country events

-attending the Don College Production ‘Shrek’

-participating in the Don College Rock Climbing Challenge

-running at the Inter-High Cross-Country Carnival at Hellyer College

-rafting on the Mersey River

-RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program)

-and Laser Skirmish at Fulton Park, Forth.

On all occasions, we received positive feedback from the community about student behaviour, work ethic

and engagement. Teachers are willing to provide learning opportunities outside the classroom, when

students are respectful, positive, hardworking and well-behaved. We should be extremely proud of the

reputation our students are building for themselves and our school community. Not only do teachers

have high expectations of students, students have high expectations of each other.

Be Kind Week

A wonderful idea has been initiated by our Student Leadership Team- ‘Be Kind Week’.

Throughout next week, they have compiled a list of activities to promote positive

relationships and respect, through being kind to each other. The team wanted to make

sure they developed a positive slant on anti-bullying and provide opportunities for all

students to model helpful and kind behaviours. I know these initiatives will continue to

drive a positive culture, where students feel safe, supported and feel a sense of belonging.

Grade 7 Maths Presentation Night

Tomorrow, parents of Grade 7 students will receive a letter invite from our Maths team to an information

session with parents and students. The evening will be held during the second last week of term, on

Wednesday 28 June. There is a direct correlation between student success and parent engagement. The

Maths team have planned a Maths program where parents can play an active role in supporting their child’s

learning. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an expert at Maths! If possible, we would love to see every

parent there.

Junior Leadership Can Drive

For the last three weeks of term, from 19 June to 7 July, the Junior Leadership classes will be holding a whole school Can

Drive. The aim is to donate/collect as many non-perishable items as possible – each donated item will earn a point for the

students’ house. Points will be counted in the last week of term.

Any donations of canned goods, spaghetti, baked beans, pasta, pasta sauce, cereals and similar items would be greatly

appreciated. These items will be donated to local community organisations such as YFCC (Youth, Family & Community

Connections) and City Mission.

We encourage you to get involved, it’s a great opportunity to support others in our community who are experiencing

hardship.

School Cross Country

On Wednesday 31 May, our school Cross Country Carnival was held at Kings Park. Participation was high on the day and

it was great to see the wave of red, green and blue running through Kings Park, Pig Island and along Sheean Walk. The

top seven students from each grade and each gender were invited to attend the Inter High Cross Country Carnival on

Wednesday 14 June at Hellyer College, Burnie. (A report follows)

It was a very close battle in the house points competition with Cygnus coming out victorious for the 3rd time this year

(with victories in the Swimming Carnival and the Big Day Out Carnival as well).

Congratulations to the Grade 8’s who had the largest participation on the day!!

Champions and runner-up’s from the school carnival were acknowledged at the assembly for their fantastic running.

INTER HIGH CROSS COUNTRY

On Wednesday 14 June, 54 students from Latrobe High School participated in the Inter High Cross

Country Carnival at Hellyer College in Burnie. It was a very difficult course with many hills and obstacles

to overcome, including a massive hill to climb close to the finish line. Many students from all schools fell

or slipped in the muddy conditions, which made for a tense, yet enjoyable day.

The best places for each grade and gender include:

Latrobe High had a very successful day placing 3rd overall,

GRADE 7 REPORT

Congratulations to the following on their excellent results at the Inter High Cross Country Championships at Hellyer

College, Burnie on Wednesday 14 June: Roman Jopson (7th), Will Sanderson (15th), Toby Rockliff (28th), Kaleb

Sims (32nd), Cooper Armitstead (34th), Jack Darby (46th) Jake Grubb (52nd); Keisha Williams (17th), Lily

Johnson (20th), Tara Steers (21st), Ashlea Dowling (46th), Abby Brown (57th) Aaliah Dennison (59th) and Charli

Hingston (62nd). Your performances were fantastic in your first Inter High Cross Country Carnival!!

Congratulations to Ena Nichols, Zoe Bugg, Dove Smith, Coby Towns, Thomas Gaffney, Cooper

Armitstead, Roman Jopson, Blade Blackburn and Dan Abd-Sahak who represented the school at the North

West Rock Climbing Championships hosted by Don College on Thursday 15 June.

Personal Interest subjects for Term 3 and 4 will be selected soon by students. A reminder that they need to do this

promptly but accurately to ensure that they get the subject choices that they desire. With many Grade 7’s experiencing

tasters on a Wednesday morning, they’ve now tried a large range of what the school offers to assist them with their

choice. Students will rotate to a new taster as of June 28 with the following classes:

7A- Music; 7B- Cooking; 7C- Art; 7D- MDT and 7E- Drama. Students will remain in these taster Personal Interests for

every Wednesday morning Block 1 class until Wednesday 23 August.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

Our Grade 7 Cross Country team did an amazing job at

the Inter High Carnival on Wednesday 14 June, finishing

very high in the field of approximately 80 students. The

team ran strongly, and as a team were able to place well

against the other schools. Pictured here is both the

boys and girls teams ready to run (plus Toby running

very strongly up the hill).

GRADE 7 REPORT continued

LEARNING

Students have maintained a fantastic work ethic

in Maths with students focussing on

measurement. Parents will have an opportunity

on Wednesday 28 June to be involved in a

Maths Information session offered by the

Grade 7 Maths teaching team. More

information will be sent out prior to the night.

RESILIENCE

Well done to Will (pictured) who showed great

resilience by bouncing back after a disappointing run at

the school Cross Country Carnival, where he finished 7th

and only just made the school team. At the Inter High he

went on to finish 2nd out of all Grade 7 Latrobe High

students and 15th overall. He finished four minutes

behind Roman (our best Grade 7 Latrobe boy at both

events) at the school carnival, but only 30 seconds

behind him at the Inter High! Well done, Will!

RESPECT

Students have shown respect whilst in their

Health lessons as they are learning about

personal safety and body image.

They have been able to understand the reasons

to maintain confidentiality whilst online and

how to ensure their social media accounts are

private.

DRAMA DEPARTMENT

The first half of the year has been a busy time for the Drama Department. Junior classes spent the first term

developing basic Drama skills by way of drama games, role-play, and simple improvisations, and are now

working on whole-class plays. Senior classes have concentrated on more advanced pieces that have involved

monologues and small group work.

Mrs Cadle’s Creative Arts class has been preparing performance work, ready for the Devonport Eisteddfods

later in the year. Drama students also attended Don College’s production of ‘Shrek’, which was a lot of fun.

It was wonderful for students to see a proper performance, with costumes, lighting and music. It was a

great excursion.

Our wonderful new Performing Arts facilities are slowly being completed. Blackout curtaining was hung

earlier this term, and we are eagerly awaiting the final stages of the theatrical lighting system to be installed.

Students really appreciate and enjoy our new teaching area. It is hard to believe we managed without it for

so long. It will make such a difference when it is fully-functional, and all our Drama classes will be able to

practise with lighting and sound.

Below are a variety of classes rehearsing and presenting drama pieces performed in class.

GRADE 8 REPORT

On Wednesday 5 July (the last Wednesday of Term 2), we are holding our whole Grade 8 Assembly in the Gym.

Students have the opportunity to display their creativity, leadership and entertainment skills during this block (1:50-

3:00pm) in front of their peers. The Creative Arts class will be displaying their videos/films that they have created since

the beginning of the year, and hopefully some Drama or Music pieces will be presented by students as well.

This is a great opportunity for those who want to be a part of the leadership team when they are in Grade 10, and for

them to start practising public/performing skills for the future.

Parents are most welcome to attend, so please send me an email if you would like to attend (students certainly won’t

let me know that you’re intending on coming!). Look forward to seeing you then.

Positive Relationships

It was great to walk around and see some of the Maths and Science classes this

week, there is some fantastic learning that occurs in these two curriculum areas.

Mrs. McPhee is one of the Grade 8 teachers for these particular areas (pictured).

She certainly has a philosophy of putting the ‘learner first’ and develops quality

relationships with all of her students.

Learning

If you have a queasy stomach, look away now! I walked into Mrs. Crossin’s class

this week to witness the 8C class dissect a sheep’s pluck (heart, liver and lungs…

yes, I had to Google this myself!) as part of the Science curriculum. Here is Belle

and CJ proudly showing their learning in this lesson! The smell, I must say, wasn’t

the greatest….

Resilience

A key value here at Latrobe High School is centred around Resilience, which for

me means ‘bouncing back’, accepting your responsibilities and facing up to

adversity or difficult situations. These boys in 8B (Ronan, Cooper, Jack, Levi and

Jaxon) can, at times, be found to be off-task! When challenged to do the right

thing, they respond very well by working hard.

Respect

In my classroom, I have the original ‘Fidget Device’, a tennis ball. The one pictured

here with Meg and Porcha I have had since I arrived here at Latrobe High School.

Any student during the lesson can take my tennis ball from my ‘red tub’ and

responsibly play with it, and then respectfully return in at the end of the lesson. It

hasn’t been lost once!

NORTH WEST ROCK CLIMBING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Thursday 15 June, 24 students represented the school at the North West Rock Climbing Championships held at

Don College, Devonport. Our team consisted of many Grade 9 students with a couple of years’ experience and many

students also making their debut.

Notable performances on the day include: Lachlan Harris winning the Senior Boys Speed Climb, Amy Fawkner win-

ning the Senior Girls Speed Climb, Roman Jopson winning the Junior Boys Inverted Wall Speed Climb and Dan Abd-

Sahak runner up in the same event.

BE KIND WEEK

There are countless acts that the world could benefit from having more of. Kindness is one of them.

When you are kind, you're not only helping others, you are helping yourself, too. There's a large amount of

evidence to prove that being kind makes you, and others around you, happy. We all need to be kind to each

other and ourselves.

Throughout next week, the leadership team will be running a different activity, every day, to help spread the

message - BE KIND. These activities include -

Monday - We lift each other up! Come and put your thumb print on our banner to support

'lifting each other up'.

Tuesday - Coloured ribbons in homeroom. Wear these ribbons for the rest of the week to show

your support for these great causes.

Orange - is the ribbon for self-harm awareness. We have chosen this ribbon because we

believe being kind can decrease the like likelihood of self-harm occurring.

Blue - is the ribbon for anti-bullying awareness. We have chosen this ribbon because this

week's theme of being kind and considerate of others can help prevent bullying.

Lime green - is the ribbon for mental health awareness. We have chosen this ribbon as being

kind can help improve mental health.

Wednesday - Blue for Beyond Blue - wear a blue accessory and bring a gold

coin donation to donate to Beyond Blue, an independent non-profit

organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety

disorders and related mental disorders

Thursday - Positive messages in homeroom - all students

will have the opportunity to express a positive opinion of another in

home room. Grade 7 students will also be attending a workshop with

the Leadership Team.

Friday - The Leadership team will be spreading the love.....

Congratulations to Grade 9 student, ASHLEE WOOLLEY and former LHS student Ebony White, for

having been chosen to represent the state in the Bowls Tasmania Junior Team. They will be competing in

Victoria from 11—13 July.

GOOD LUCK, GIRLS!

Good luck to Colby McCall who will represent Tasmania in South Australia, from Wednesday 21 June

through to Tuesday 27 June, in the Australian Off-Road Championships. Colby will race in the J4 division on

Saturday and Sunday with approximately 30 other riders from around Australia.

On Saturday he will race in a two hour ride competition (Enduro) and on Sunday, he will compete in the

sprint race which has multiple rounds. Colby is one of five Tasmanian riders heading over to South

Australia, and he would like to thank North West Motorcycles for their ongoing support.

GRADE 9 REPORT

There is only a little over two weeks to go in Term 2. Teachers are finalising their assessments in preparation for the

mid-year report. This is a very important time to make sure all students are giving their best efforts and are finishing all

work requirements.

Winter weather is bringing with it a challenge for the students to stay warm. I urge parents to support the school with

the uniform policy that has been put in place by the Latrobe High School School Association. Please ensure that your son

or daughter is attending school wearing the correct uniform. Instead of non-uniform jackets, thermals are a great idea to

keep warm and they are not seen.

RESPECT and POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS:

Zoie Ambrose was respecting the contract agreement by returning $1.50 she owed

Mr MacMichael. Well done Zoie, I wasn’t sure if you could do it, but Mr MacMichael

had full confidence in you!

RESILIENCE:

Act for Peace - Food Ration Challenge: Bell Freestone-Spindle-Tree will take part in the Food Ration Challenge and

show the refugees in Jordan that she is with them and not against them. She is urging people to support this cause and go

to the website and sign up to make a difference or join a group. She is hoping to make money to raise awareness of the

way Syrian refugees live life.

A Refugee Girl

The sky is dark and dull, there isn’t a single child running

around on the street playing. Everyone’s door is locked.

They’re all scared of what is happening. I’m scared as well. My mother is thinking we may have to move to

Jorden to be safe from what’s happening. Father says it won’t be safe soon. This scares me even more.

I don’t know what is going to happen to me, or my family. I asked my mother and my father if they’re going to

tell my brother what’s happening. They said it would scare him too much.

My mother and father say they are going to take us to Jorden to live in a refugee camp. Father said it is safe

there. I hope he’s right, but I don’t want to move from Syria, it’s my home and I love it here, but I realise I

would rather be safe from the war.

GRADE 10 REPORT

On Thursday last week all Grade 10 students went to RYDA. RYDA is a driver safety learning program

aimed at young people. Here we learnt the importance of abiding by road rules and were told of the

consequences of drink driving, driving under the influence of drugs, speeding and reckless driving.

Our day was filled with many activities, from learning about car safety to being warned by the police. The

part of the day that had the most impact was hearing from a road accident victim about how his life was

ruined from just one stupid mistake.

I hope that all Grade 10 students found this day valuable and never take risks on the road.
