This year’s Macleay Island Classic was staged in picture perfect weather conditions. The main event for singles and doubles was held on Saturday with 50 registered competitors taking part. Competitors had travelled from as far south as Coffs Harbour and Hervey Bay in the north. Mayor Karen Williams, stationed on the Club pontoon, was the official starter of the event. What a spectacular sight it made as Mayor Karen dipped the flag and the paddlers raced away on their anti-clockwise course of 15 km around the Island. On Sunday it was time for the team events with the 6 person outrigger canoes and relay teams battling it out on the water. Results and photos from both days can be found in the following pages of this newsletter.

T I N G I R A A H O Y !Macleay Island Classic - Sunday’s Team EventsAlthough there were fewer competitors on Sunday compared to Saturday, it was none the less exciting with close racing in both the outrigger canoe and the relay teams.

It was a fierce battle (Royale) between the outrigger canoe teams (OC6) Pete’s Princesses and Team Ted with both teams sharing the lead during the event. The Princesses with Peter Hayward on the sweep got away to a good start and led down the western side of Macleay Island and all the way to Corroboree Park. From there Team Ted, with Ted Upton on the sweep, took the lead towards home (with the Princesses making back some ground along the way). The spirit from each team was 12/10 and there was much encouragement from the spectators on shoreline. The results below show a very close finish with just a little over 1 minute the difference. A very close match indeed!

    Outrigger Canoes (OC6)

    Team Place Time Effort

    Team Ted 1st 1:44:46:43 12/10

    Pete’s Princesses 2nd 1:45:38:35 12/10

Pete’s Princesses showed great spirit and determination and can’t wait for a rematch.

The relay event on Sunday was also a hot contest between the Barracoota-Martins and the Sandpiper relay teams. The Barracoota-Martins with a five member team do not qualify as rookies for this event. Having already won for five years running they were out to capture their 6th trophy win.

And it is not all about winning. Annadell Tyack impressed us all with a courageous effort on her stand-up-paddle board.Annadell succeeded in completing the course around the Island and in doing so collected the prize money for her category Female SUP (30-39yrs)

And not to forget Tingira Member Digby Huffam (OBE)!Digby who has received his OBE (over bloody eighty) medal not only competed in Saturday’s individual event (sea kayaks / plastics 50+) finishing the course in 1hr:46min:01second but backed it up the next day by being part of the Team Ted OC6 crew.

Digby is pictured (far left) with the Team Ted crew. Digby competed in both the individual and team events - an impressive effort!

Feedback from the competitors:It is only early days yet but there have been a good number of positive comments from competitors given both verbally on the weekend and emailed to the club from those who travelled to Macleay Island to participate in the Macleay Island Classic:
