Work

At Kirkland, you’ll work on challenging, substantive matters right alongside our senior partners. We give you the freedom to choose the matters on which you work.

Kirkland has four core practice areas:

• Corporate: We work on sophisticated transactions, including in the areas of private equity, M&A, debt finance, capital markets, tax and real estate.

• Intellectual Property: We’re known for our complex patent litigation, copyright, trademark, Internet and advertising practices.

• Litigation: We take on the most complex and challenging cases, and our success rate at trial is among the best in the country.

• Restructuring: We represent some of the world’s largest companies and key stakeholders in high-profile, complicated restructurings.

Our attorneys work together as multidisciplinary teams to provide innovative solutions and superior service for our multinational clients.

Life at Kirkland: Close Colleagues

“Kirkland attorneys genuinely

care about the individuals on their

teams, and we rely on one another

to achieve our goals. I have devel-

oped unexpectedly strong bonds

with my colleagues, and I think

the organic nature of the open

assignment system has played a

large part.

“For instance, I was a member

of a team handling a complex,

global matter with an extremely

compressed timeline. The deal

team and our client contacts built

strong connections with one an-

other over the course of several in-

tense weeks of in-person negotia-

tions. When the deal finally closed,

it was strangely bittersweet. We

had all bonded for a common goal

and worked hard together to suc-

cessfully achieve it — and then it

was suddenly over. This particular

deal had closed a few days before

the Super Bowl and, because I

don’t think any of us wanted to

simply disband so abruptly, the

senior partner had the Kirkland

team over to his house to watch

the game and grill steaks from

the best butcher shop in Brook-

lyn. The lesson I took away was

that the relationships you forge

(professional and personal) can be

just as meaningful as the success

of any particular matter.”

“I’m proud to work at a firm that handles such challenging, complex work.”

My Perspective:Patrick Jacobs

“Kirkland provides a stimulating environment with incredible payoff and gratification. I’m honored to work at a firm with such top-notch attorneys, a stellar reputation and a promising trajectory.

“Kirkland helped me to develop the ability to manage complex projects that attorneys at other firms don’t get to handle until much later in their careers. I’ve gained practical and technical experience, and have learned to challenge myself and test my limits, which has enabled me to take on larger responsibilities with confidence.”

Culture

Kirkland’s culture sets you up to succeed.

Our environment is friendly, fair and respectful. We pride ourselves on our entrepreneurial spirit and meritocratic structure. From the get-go, you’re a valued team member, and you’ll work alongside some of the brightest minds and most esteemed individuals in the legal industry.

Kirkland does not have a minimum billable hour requirement. Our attorneys manage their work and time as they see fit, and we strive to achieve work-life balance.

We believe that we draw strength from our different experiences and backgrounds. Our Firmwide Diversity and Inclusion Committee and various subcommittees for LGBT, women and minority attorneys support our diversity efforts through rich policies and programming.

Kirkland is also committed to social responsibility. We support a variety of causes and communities through our award-winning pro bono work and contributions through the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation, which donates millions of dollars annually to charitable and law-related organizations around the world.

Life at Kirkland: Early Responsibility

“Kirkland gives associates signifi-

cant responsibility early on in their

careers, which provides so many

opportunities to quickly learn and

grow. In terms of knowledge and

experience, I am leaps and bounds

ahead of my peers at other firms.

“As a second-year, I worked on a

matter in which we represented

a creditor in the City of Detroit’s

Chapter 9 bankruptcy case. That

representation demonstrates the

unique types of matters Kirkland

takes on. As a junior associate, I

was often the closest to the docu-

ments and legal research at issue,

and the partners looked to me

to speak up during negotiations

when something wasn’t right.”

—Alexandra Schwarzman

“From day one, associates are encouraged to be proactive in managing their careers.”

“I’ve formed close friendships with my colleagues at Kirkland.”

My Perspective:Alexandra Schwarzman

“Kirkland attorneys are supportive and friendly, regardless of level or practice group. There’s a fantastic team attitude here, and I’m as comfortable asking a partner for advice as I am a fellow associate.

“I’ve also developed great friendships here with attorneys across multiple practice groups. I’ve stayed particularly good friends with my colleagues from the Summer Program. It’s a fantastic feeling to work with people whom I consider close friends.”

Training & Development

Kirkland is committed to providing our attorneys with ample resources, training and development to guide them throughout their careers — at Kirkland and beyond.

Our formal, practice-specific training programs take place year-round and feature lectures, workshops, mock trials, boardroom exercises and other presentations led by senior attorneys.

To round out your training, Kirkland offers frequent in-house professional development programming, including workshops focusing on management and leadership skills and business

development. You’ll also benefit from informal training and development as you work closely with senior associates, partners and clients on sophisticated matters. You’ll be given hands-on work experience and significant responsibility from your first days at Kirkland.

Kirkland’s pro bono, diversity and women’s programs, as well as our various administrative committees, also offer opportunities for personal and professional development and leadership.

Life at Kirkland: Building Confidence

“The learning opportunities at

Kirkland are great — especially

if you’re willing to put yourself

outside your comfort zone.

“In college, I was a computer

science major with a quiet repu-

tation, which I held on to through

law school. My experiences at

Kirkland helped me to gain confi-

dence to speak up.

“Kirkland’s training programs

helped instill this confidence.

Kirkland’s litigation training pro-

gram, the Kirkland Institute for

Trial Advocacy, is an interactive

experience that helped boost my

communication skills. The program

made me feel comfortable talking

to any number of people, at any

level, anytime, anywhere, without

feeling nervous. I know that with

this training, and with the mentor-

ship of the partners I work with, I

am prepared to handle any aspect

of any litigation matter that comes

my way.”

—Justin Singh

“Our associates gain experience faster than those at other firms.”

“There is mutual trust among the attorneys at Kirkland.”

My Perspective:Justin Singh

“When I was a first-year, I appreciated the fact that the attorneys I worked with trusted me to complete assignments independently, while sharing their expertise and guidance to help me grow as a lawyer. They gave me meaningful responsibility, and they showed me how my tasks fit into the bigger picture of the case and within the Firm as a whole. That kind of informal mentorship and training is incredibly valuable.”

Achievements

Kirkland’s achievements and awards are a testament to the talent of our attorneys, the excellence of our practices and the effectiveness of our local and Firmwide initiatives.

Part of what drives Kirkland’s success is our commitment to helping our attorneys achieve their goals and build rewarding careers. From the moment you join us, you’ll find that your senior colleagues are eager to

guide and mentor you. Our alumni program is another valuable resource for connecting with current and former colleagues. It’s this enthusiasm for paying it forward that keeps Kirkland thriving and full of energy.

We’re confident that Kirkland’s rich hands-on experiences, trainings and supportive working environments will help you pave your personal path to success.

Life at Kirkland: Personal Success

“I joined Kirkland to help build

and grow the Houston office’s

litigation team. I was immediately

drawn to the Firm’s culture — it’s

truly collaborative, and our attor-

neys are hungry and motivated. I

feel like I’ve found my tribe.

“When I came here, I couldn’t

believe the investment that Kirk-

land puts into formal training. You

don’t spend a lot of time in law

school learning the nuts and bolts

of the craft — you really have to

be taught, and Kirkland takes that

training very seriously. The asso-

ciates on my team feel confident

when they go to take a deposition

for the first time, and that reinforc-

es my confidence in them.

“Our attorneys are quick,

hard-working, energetic and

always seeing the possibilities. I’m

blown away case after case, work-

ing with colleagues across differ-

ent offices and practice areas. I’m

proud to call Kirkland home.”

—Anna Rotman

“Our young attorneys are highly motivated, and Kirkland ensures that they have tremendous opportunities.”
