Dear Reader,Corporate success generally depends on

many factors. But whatever the sector, competent and committed employees are the

most essential factor. In the Backman-Trummer Group, we invest in the professional skill of our personnel over the long-term through training. Employee wellbeing and job satisfaction are also key priorities in the Group’s service strategy.

In our sector, legislation and directives determine the boundary conditions of operations. Changes in national and EU legislation must be implemented effectively and this calls for frequent training of personnel. Through these training courses we make certain that our employees have all the information required to do a professional job. Our staff also has the opportunity to develop their competence in other areas, whether in supervisory skills or information technology. We assess available training primarily on the basis of quality. It isn’t always necessary to look for an educator outside the company because top-notch competence in

certain special fields can be found in our own organization. Whenever possible, we also make use of this expertise in customer training.

The quality of the customer service in our Group is also secured by maintaining the working capacity, job satisfaction, and safety of our employees. Some health services are provided at the workplace and in addition to statutory health care, extra services that encourage employees to pursue an active life style and healthy diet are available. The goal is a motivated staff and functioning work community that are able to respond to customer needs promptly and professionally.

The port operating company Stevena is providing expertise for demolition of the

Koverhar steel works in Hanko. The company is coordinating logistics related to the handling of the works’ machinery and equipment and is preparing their shipment for the new owners. The project was commissioned by Delete Finland Oy, the specialist in environmental services for industry and the building sector that is in charge of demolition logistics for the entire area.

Operations at the Koverhar steel works came to an end when its owner went bankrupt in 2012. As no-one was found to continue operations, it was decided to reuse the works area for other purposes and the facilities were sold to Delete for demolition. Demolition got under way in 2014 and is scheduled for completion during the current autumn. Most of the more than 30 buildings in the area have been torn down for recycling and entities of the machinery and equipment have been sold to various buyers abroad. The material for which Stevena is responsible comprises some 10 thousand tonnes and 15 thousand cubic metres, which are the equivalent of 450 semi-trailer loads. Since the largest entities being handled weigh more than 100 tonnes, road transport was not an option in this case. Instead, ship transport is required.

Stevena coordinates demolition logistics for the Koverhar steel works

Stevena’s contribution to the demolition project began in July. It’s being directed by customer service manager Kristoffer Retva, who, together with his team, is managing the project in cooperation with Delete’s experts.

“Every day of the project has brought new and sometimes also surprising things to the fore. This has even called for rapid adjustment to situations and coordination of the work with the other parties. Nevertheless, rapport with both Delete and also with the other partners and parties has been excellent,” Retva expresses his appreciation.

“There’s also been international cooperation in the project as representatives of the buyer and equipment supplier from North Africa and China are working at the demolition site. Also, a Mexican company specialising in industrial projects is responsible for separation of equipment entities,” Retva explains.

As the representative

of Delete, Nikolas Ruotsalainen is in charge of logistics for equipment destined for resale. He expressed his satisfaction with Stevena’s performance in the project.

“The logistics for damage-sensitive equipment require special competence and even creativity to a certain extent. We chose Stevena for the task because they have the professional skill and ability to respond quickly to new situations. These qualities have in fact stood out clearly in their work throughout the process,” Ruotsalainen explains.

“Overall, we are very pleased about our cooperation with Stevena. It’s been a real joy to work with them,” says Ruotsalainen.

The extensive steel works demolition project at Koverhar will be concluded this autumn.

In Kokkola Backman-Trummer offers its customers tailor-made logistics solutions for

various modes of transport, forwarding and warehousing. Every week the six-member team in Kokkola handles numerous assignments for Ostrobothnian export and import companies in different sectors of industry and trade. Long-term customers include Accon Suomi Oy, with whom cooperation began in the 1990s.

Accon is the leading supplier of big bags in the Nordic countries. The company’s product range also includes a variety of special sacks and other packaging products tailored to customer needs. Accon operates in all the Nordic countries and Estonia. Its Finnish office and production plant are located in Kokkola. Accon Suomi’s products are used by Finnish exporters in various industrial sectors.

Logistics face many challengesBackman-Trummer has overall responsibility for the logistics required by Accon’s import cargoes as either the receiving or the transporting forwarder. Import cargoes comprise the raw materials, semi-manufactures and finished products used in the production of sacks. Shipments arrive by truck or in sea containers. Sea cargoes are directed in the main to the Port of Kokkola, although other Finnish harbours are also used when preferable.

Accon Suomi’s managing director Petri Laasanen describes his company’s import logistics as a supply chain controlled jointly by Accon and Backman-Trummer. He points out that there is a strong foundation for cooperation.

“We seek reliability for the delivery chain and insist on flexibility, punctuality and the capacity for quick response to changing situations on the part of our partner. Expertise and the availability of personnel are individual factors that stand out in everyday operations. Smooth flows of information in changing situations are also important. Backman-Trummer has been able to respond well to these challenges and the personnel there have been able to react flexibly and make the extra effort when needed. For example, many good solutions that serve us have been made in road transport,” Laasanen explains.

According to Laasanen, there will be even more challenges to logistics in the future. “Operational flexibility will grow in importance because our manufacturing sites will be increasingly distant from Finland and transport will be shifting to the use of sea containers. Delays may be much longer then and a systematic approach and an efficient chain will become even more crucial factors,” Laasanen predicts.

Specialists with multiple competencesHannu Myllymäki, Backman-Trummer’s area manager in Kokkola, has served Backman-Trummer for 20 years and already worked with Accon and its predecessors for an earlier employer. In his opinion, managing cargo consignments from all over the world requires strict monitoring of the logistics chain and timetables from the country of departure to the recipient of the shipment.

“Cargoes come from many different countries, as far away as Asia. We also handle customs clearance for shipments coming from outside the EU. In addition, depending on the size of the shipment, we take responsibility for transport directly to Accon customers throughout Finland and the Nordic countries,” says Myllymäki.

All members of Myllymäki’s team have their own principal area of responsibility, although in practice job descriptions are not

strictly adhered to. “In a given year we manage a large number

of commissions that vary from shipments that recur weekly to large project transports. Operations are organised so that some of our employees concentrate on imports and others on exports. Nevertheless, tasks vary according to the situation, and when necessary everyone does everything: air freight, road transport, container cargoes, conventional sea cargoes, courier services and warehousing.

Our personnel are trained and experienced to handle tasks requiring special expertise such as temperature-controlled transports and shipments of hazardous substances.”

“Apart from customer service, everyone also takes part in sales and goes through the costs of the customer’s assignment in relation to the various modes of transport allowed by the schedule,” Myllymäki explains the comprehensive operating model of his team.

New warehouse facilities for Stevena at Naantali

Blomberg Stevedoring’s grain laboratory acquires the latest analysis technology

Stevena Oy’s warehousing operations at the Port of Naantali’s Kantasatama area obtained

much needed additional space in October, when the company rented nearly 2,800 sq. metres of recently completed warehouse facilities from Naantalin Satama Oy on a long-term contract. The new facility replaces the old K warehouse at the harbour, which was completed in 1988 and had reached the end of its life cycle. Some of the strong demand for warehouse capacity at the Port has now been met with construction of the new facility, which is the largest that the plot could accommodate.

In contrast to the previous warehouse, the new K warehouse is divided into two parts of equal size, both of which accommodate 3000 to 4000 tonnes of marine cargo. Its concrete pressure walls and smooth ceilings represent the latest building technology. It’s a welcome improvement at the main harbour, where the last new warehouse facilities had been built in 1995. All in all, Stevena now has more than 26,000 sq. metres of covered storage space in Naantali. When Turku and Uusikaupunki are included there are more than 50,000 sq. metres of covered storage space.

The demand for grain analysis has increased along with customer requirements. The

need for and number of pretested samples is growing simultaneously. Blomberg Stevedoring in Vaasa has responded to the growing demand by acquiring a FOSS InfraTec Nova grain analyzer for its laboratory. The analyzer enables determination for example of moisture, protein, and starch contents and also hectolitre weight direct from whole grains using near infrared transmittance technology. Thanks to the new technique, Blomberg Stevedoring will be able to offer more diverse analysis services to producers and the grain trade. Toxin determinations for oats will continue at the company’s grain laboratory according to previous practice.

In connection with acquisition of the new equipment, Blomberg Stevedoring has also joined the NIT (Near Infrared Transmittance) Grain Network maintained by Evira, the Finnish Food Safety Authority. NIT comprises all the equipment linked to a single

network via modems. Evira is responsible for administration of the network and calibration of the analysis equipment.
