Dear Friends of the College Foundation:

Thank you! Only because of you are we able to fulfill our mission to provide support to Cape Cod Community College, its students, its faculty, and its community endeavors. You are the reason we have been hard at work for 27 years to further this shared mission.

We are pleased to report that the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation defied a national trend in higher education philanthropy in Fiscal Year 2010. Thanks to your generosity, the College Foundation was actually able to increase the number of donors by 13% and overall support by more than 10% over the previous fiscal year. We were also awarded the first grant ever received on behalf of the College from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The College Foundation receives support from a myriad of sources including grants, bequests, and events, but many of our largest and most significant gifts are donations from individuals. Your continued involvement in this new fiscal year will be of paramount importance as the state appropriation to the College was slashed by 12% or $1,500,000 for 2010-2011. This sum is on average what the College Foundation raises for the College annually; and year after year, the College has taken on more students with reduced state funding. Without your support, even more drastic financial measures would have to be taken by the College. In the year ahead, we will embark on special fundraising campaigns in concert with the 50th Founding Anniversary Celebration of the College. These include raising funds to enhance and update the College’s dental hygiene clinic widely used by the community, and completing campaigns to improve accessibility to the Tilden Arts Center, and the renovation and expansion of the W.B. Nickerson Cape Cod History Archives. We welcome your investments in these and other College priorities, including our student scholarship initiatives and faculty and staff enhancement grants.

You truly make a difference, as do our volunteers— including our board of directors and our small but hard-working staff. Sadly, this past year, we say good bye with gratitude to outgoing volunteer board members Harvey S. Irlen and Kathleen Snow and to Natalie K. L. DuBois who served as Executive Director of the College Foundation for more than 16 years. We wish them all well.

And with these transitions, we also announce the appointment of the College Foundation’s new Executive Director Laurent A. Fisher. Laurent has decades of development and alumni experience, and we welcome her into our fold as the Foundation’s third full-time director. We also officially welcome three new board members: CCCC Alumni Association liaison Dimitar Arabadzhiev of Hyannis, Patricia A. Hurton of Mashpee, and CCCC Student Representative Bernard “BJ” Kilroy of Centerville. And finally, we welcome back Charles A. Marshall, Jr. of West Barnstable returning to the board as our treasurer.

We are grateful for all of you, donors and volunteers, and thank you on behalf of the students who ultimately benefit from your vision and abiding commitment to quality higher education on Cape Cod.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth M. Lewis John W. Miller Chairperson Interim Executive Director & Immediate Past Chairperson

Establish a Scholarship

You can change lives now and into the future by funding

your own CCCC student scholarship in your name or

that of a loved one or business. A one-time student

scholarship can be funded for as little as $500, funding

an average three-credit course at the equivalent of $453,

with a balance to defray textbook and/or course material

expenses. The Foundation makes the management of

these awards easy and rewarding, taking into account

your specific wishes for individual scholarship recipient

requirements.

Since 1983, the College Foundation has awarded more

than $5.3 million in scholarships to deserving students.

Endowed scholarships continued in perpetuity can be

established with a minimum $10,000 gift paid in one lump

sum or over multiple payments. Fifty-one of the College

Foundation’s current scholarships are endowed at $10,000

or higher.

For more information, contact the College Foundation at

508-375-4015 or [email protected].

July 8-12, 15-19Tennis Tournament

The 17th Annual CCCC Open Tennis Tournament at the College tennis courts attracted some 300 singles and doubles players and $18,000 in support to the College Foundation. A stellar volunteer committee and generous sponsors ensured the popular event’s success once again, topped off by a BBQ reception.

September 20 21st Golf Tournament

Nearly $30,000 was raised at the Hyannis Golf Club. The event was funded in part by presenting sponsors Helene’s Gifts and Wayside Gallery, both of Chatham. Thanks to thousands of supporters and players, the event has realized $350,000 in scholarship support over our 21 years of play.

October 28 Map Book Launch

The College Foundation and the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank hosted more than 200 history buffs to a book-launch reception and signing of The 1858 Map of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, & Nantucket book to benefit the W.B. Nickerson Cape Cod History Archives campaign underway for the College. Joseph Garver of the Harvard University Map Library presented on the history of mapmaking followed by an essay reading by fellow book contributor Robert Finch. The sell-out first edition was published in partnership with On Cape Publications and Cape Cod Five in support of the Nickerson Campaign.

Second-edition copies are now available for $50 and can be purchased online at www.ccccfoundation.org or by calling 508-375-4015.

November 1 Ruth Burrough Event

A “friendraiser” was hosted at the Woods Hole Golf Club by Foundation Board member Jackie Nolan to announce the establishment of the Ruth B. Burrough Scholarship by the College Foundation. The College and our student scholarships were always a priority endeavor for Ruth during her 11 years of service on the Foundation board. The newly-endowed scholarship will benefit students from the Falmouth area attending the Cape Cod Community College.

December 3 An Evening of Discovery and Philanthropy at the Chatham Bars Inn

Hosted by the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, the evening featured guest speaker William D. “Bill” Green, Chatham resident and Accenture CEO. Overwhelming generosity from within and outside the College raised nearly $50,000 in response to a $100,000 scholarship match challenge by Mr. Green. The scholarship will be earmarked for full-time students studying at the College in the fields of Business, Hospitality, Information Technology, Environmental Technology, and other green jobs of the future. When the $200,000 Accenture Scholarship is fully endowed, it will be the largest endowed scholarship held and managed by the College’s Educational Foundation. An encore event to raise the remaining match monies is being planned for the winter of 2011.

December 23 NEH Grant Announced

The Foundation announced its award of a $170,000 matching grant made by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the only grant made in this particular series to a community college in the Commonwealth. The prestigious award, and the College’s first NEH grant, is being applied to the $1,000,000 campaign to expand and renovate the College’s W.B. Nickerson Cape Cod History Archives.

January 16 Day of Wellness

A first-ever Day of Wellness, co-presented by CCCC Alumna Diane Kovanda, was held on campus to benefit the Foundation. The day attracted a wonderful cross-section of participation from the community and college in attendance—many on campus for the first time. The day was devoted to inspiring health, relaxation and renewal, and featured wellness activities such as massage, reflexology, yoga, mini-facials, meditation, and acupuncture demonstrations. Wellness screenings were administered by the College’s Nursing, Massage Therapy, & Dental Hygiene faculty and students.

FISCAL YEAR HIGHLIGHTS

3

February 26 Farewell to Natalie

Approximately 100 well wishers gathered in the Lorusso Technology Building Solarium to bid farewell to Natalie K.L. DuBois, the College Foundation’s longtime Executive Director. Natalie, pictured above left with Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross, began her career with the Foundation in 1993 as the second full-time Executive Director of the Foundation. Under her tenure, the Foundation grew by leaps and bounds. Her accomplishments represent remarkable achievement, including the distinction that our College Foundation consistently holds one of the highest student per capita endowments among the Commonwealth’s 16 community colleges. In spite of her success, Natalie was always quick to assert that her job was “merely” to provide opportunities for the extraordinary generosity of the community and donors who recognize the vital role our college provides.

April 14&15 Art Donation Events

CCCC celebrated the addition of two acrylic paintings by Cotuit resident and artist Richard C. Bartlett, in a dedication ceremony in the Wilkens Library. The two colorful paintings, donated by the artist, uniquely depict the development of graphic letter design and are both displayed in the main lobby of the library.

Bartlett’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Wiggin Collection of the Boston Public Library; the Bezellel Museum of Israel; Le Bibliothéque Nationale in Paris; the Boston Athenaeum; and other private and public collections. One of his donated pieces to the College is featured on the back cover of this report. On Thursday, April 15, the College also dedicated the installation of a contemporary sculpture by Centerville artist Richard Neal entitled Head in the Books. The dramatic 140-pound sculpture is made entirely of books and will be on permanent

display in the Lorusso Applied Technology Building Solarium.

According to Neal, the Lorusso Applied Technology building, the first LEED-certified building built by the Commonwealth, is an ideal location for this sculpture. “Head in the Books reflects an interest I have long had in sustainability and in reusing the materials that surround us as a medium for making art.”

April 28 Donor Appreciation Dinner

The Foundation hosted its major donors for dinner and entertainment from Culinary, Drama and Music students of the College. The Earth-Day themed event featured a local, mouth-watering menu and “sustainable gifts” under the supervision of Zammer Hospitality Institute Coordinator Tom Connolly.

June 14 College Connection Event The College Connection program brings a variety of CCCC services, advisors, and counselors directly into area high schools, linking graduating seniors directly to admissions information and placement testing, no matter where they plan to go after graduation. Since the program was piloted in 2008, it has provided services to over 1900 seniors and assisted nearly 100 families with the financial aid process. Program Director Lisa Fedy welcomed donors, partners, and College officials to the Lorusso Solarium to celebrate another successful year and to welcome new partner, Mashpee High School. During the event, first-hand accounts of the College Connection program’s impact on schools and students were given by Carol Woodbury, Superintendent of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and two student participants–Arielle Biron of Harwich High School and Evan Waugh from Barnstable High School. Fiscal year donors to the program included BackOffice Associates, Bank of America, James Hinkle, Jr. & Roy Hammer, the Lyndon Paul Lorusso Foundation, TD Charitable Foundation, Walmart Foundation, and the Wilkens Family Trust.

Excellence in Teaching Award

Each year the College faculty honor one of their own who has gone far above the expectation in scholarship, teaching, and service to students. The College Foundation sponsors the award. This year’s honoree, Professor Patricia “Trish” Allen, was completely overwhelmed as her name was read from the Commencement podium.

Professor Allen’s students’ education is her first priority. She understands the challenges

experienced by non-traditional students and has served in a variety of roles that have forged relationships between area high schools and the College. She has worked tirelessly as an advisor and instructor in programs and courses designed to promote student success among first-time college students. A gifted and creative teacher, Professor Allen challenges students to think critically and carefully about their own work, about their peers’ work, and about the tools that they are likely to need in the real world. Moreover, her own journey in pursuit of education continues to inspire her students on a daily basis. After first dropping out of high school, Professor Allen persevered and earned a GED, an Associate in Arts degree from CCCC, an undergraduate degree from Wellesley College, and a Master Degree in Education from Harvard University. She resides in West Yarmouth.

Alumnus of the Year

Charles A. Marshall, Jr. was named CCCC Alumnus of the Year at the 2010 Commencement. Mr. Marshall is a Director at ML Weekes & Company, PC, a public accounting and consulting firm serving the needs of colleges, universities, hospitals, non-profits and government contractors. He earned an AA in Accounting and Business in 1995, an AS in Computer Information Systems in 1996 from Cape Cod Community College, a BS in Accounting in 1999, a MBA in Finance in 2001 from Fairfield University, and a BS in Information Technology from UMass, Lowell in 2009.

Mr. Marshall has demonstrated a continuing interest in and support of Cape Cod Community College over time through contributions of his time, talents and resources. He has been an active member of the CCCC Educational Foundation (2004-2007), serving as treasurer on the Executive Committee during the last two years of his term and returning to the post in 2010. Marshall has also been a strong advocate for energizing the Alumni Association and fueled that advocacy with his volunteer leadership of the board since 2004, including serving two terms as chair 2005-2006 and again in 2008-2009. In the community, Mr. Marshall serves as a call/volunteer firefighter in West Barnstable and as a licensed EMT.

CAMPUS AWARDS & HONORS

EVENING OF EXCELLENCE

5

Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation announced $250,000 for 195 scholarship awards at the annual Evening of Excellence ceremony. We thank you for these gifts which promote educational advancement and retention in the lives of so many students who cross our campus.

This year, scholarships from $500 to $5,000 were awarded to current, incoming, and graduating students. Recipients were selected based on their academic excellence, accomplishments, and in some cases, financial need or personal circumstances. The awards included four newly endowed scholarships: the Accenture Scholarship; the Ruth B. Burrough Scholarship; the Christopher Lovelock Scholarship and the Barnstable Bar Association Scholarship.

Also new in 2010 were the: • Boleyn/Kadar Scholarship • Natalie Linke DuBois Scholarship • Harold D. Smith Memorial Scholarship • Making Education Possible Scholarship • Phillip M. Hanly Memorial Scholarship • Cape Cod Human Resources Association Scholarship

Presentations were announced by Liz Lewis, Chairperson of the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, and John W. Miller, Interim Executive Director along with Susan Miller, the College’s Interim Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. Professor Patricia M. McGraw, the 2009 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, was the honored faculty speaker.

Heidi Cappadona, a 4.0 graduating student from East Harwich (pictured here), spoke on behalf of all the scholarship recipients, expressing heartfelt thanks:

“When we hear the name Cape Cod Community College, we think of higher education. This college gives the student of any age, a chance to begin or begin again. We also think ‘community’ because from the first day a student walks on campus the caring of this close-knit community can be felt. Here we find great professors and teachers who will always go the extra mile to help us succeed. We find friendly administrative staff to answer our every question. And most of all, we find that CCCC has provided for our benefit an amazing amount of student programs designed to give the student all the support and help they could possibly need to succeed, even when it’s been twenty years since they left high school.

Tonight our community has given us the gift of education and a better future… but most of all we will be better people because our community has given us a strong sense of helping others. This goodwill, we will carry with us wherever we go; and one day in the not so distant future, we will be able to give the gift of education to others.”

DENTAL HYGIENE CAMPAIGN

6

In concert with the College’s 50th Anniversary in 2011,

the College Foundation will embark upon a $1,500,000

campaign to renovate and upgrade the College’s highly

successful dental hygiene clinic. The College Dental

Hygiene Program currently operates a 14-chair clinic as

part of its program, where dental hygiene students treat

patients while under the supervision of licensed dental

hygienists and dentists. While the size of the renovated

clinic will remain the same, campaign funds will be used

to update the facility and advance the level of service,

providing the community with access to affordable

dental/operative care.

Specifically, campaign funds will allow for:

•Replacementof DatedFacilities—allowingstudentsto

be trained in a state-of-the-art clinic with improved

care for patients

•MoreHoursof DentalClinicAvailability—increasingthe

number of hours of clinical training for students and

types of clinical training available, and increasing the

number of appointments available to patients

•HigherLevelof DentalCareintheClinic—fromdental

hygiene only to operative/dental care. This will

attract a more diverse pool of patients and ensure

that students are exposed to more complex cases and

diverse treatment options in their clinical training. The

expanded care will also address additional community

dental needs.

A recent report estimated that 33% of residents in the

College’s service area do not have adequate access to

dental care. These community needs are reflected in the

patient pool seeking care at CCCC’s clinic where:

• 25%of thepatientslackaccesstodentalcare;

• 74%reportedthattheyhadnodentalinsurance;and

• 64%soughtservicesatCCCC’sclinicbecausethey

could not otherwise afford dental care.

There are no other schools of dental hygiene within 50

miles of Cape Cod. CCCC is the only institution that

offers training opportunities for students interested

in Dental Health in this region. The Dental hygiene

program accepts 22 students each fall semester. Since

2004 the program has graduated 130 students with

the majority of graduates remaining in the area to work

within the Community.

You too can leave your mark with a Legacy gift—regardless of your means.

PLANNED GIFTS AND BEQUESTS

This fiscal year was one of growth and challenging transitions. Laura L.

Flanders, the Foundation’s Chair, passed away in the fall of 2009 and new

board member, Deborah A. Skinner, succumbed to a short illness just

months later. Both Laura and Deborah exemplified a deep commitment

and passion for the Foundation’s mission; and both women remembered

the College Foundation in their estate plans as members of the College

Foundation’s Legacy for Learning Society.

Laura was a beloved tutor and English teacher at Cape Cod Community College.

Before being hired as a CCCC English instructor in the early 1970s, she worked

as a high-fashion model in her native New York. Among the many hats she wore on Cape

Cod, Laura worked in the hotel and advertising/sales industries. A graduate of Cornell

University, she also taught high school English and served as a selectman in Eastham for

six years.

Deb, an avid golfer, was a lead committee member of the College’s annual benefit

golf tournament. In addition to the College Foundation, Deborah sat on the Executive

Committee of the Cape Cod chapter of SCORE. Before moving to Harwich, she worked in

New York as a merchandise executive and director of overseas operations for Federated

Stores where she was the first buyer for the company in China during the 1970s.

Through the years, many individuals have found planned gifts to be excellent vehicles for benefiting their favorite charitable organizations. In addition to personal satisfaction, such gifts offer major planning opportunities to minimize federal and state taxes, increasing the possibilities for effective distribution of assets.

While we have highlighted a variety of gift-planning options for the College Foundation, we encourage you to consult an advisor to review your full estate as changes to the law are constant. We will be delighted to work with you and/or your advisors in establishing a bequest or planned gift that best suits your needs and objectives now and into the future. Thank you!

DONORS

We’ve joined TD Bank’s Affinity Membership Program,

which provides the Cape Cod Community College

Educational Foundation the opportunity to earn annual

cash contributions, providing we obtain 50 minimum

members. There is no cost to our organization or affinity

members in this program.

To join, you can call a customer service representative,

or visit any TD Bank location and ask to have your

balances included as part of the Cape Cod Community

College Foundation’s Affinity Membership Program. Of

course, members’ accounts are not affected in any way

by this contribution, and the account balances that are

used to determine the level of contribution are kept

entirely confidential by TD Bank.

Here’s how it works:

TD Bank will contribute a percentage of the annual

balance in every member account. Checking, savings,

money market, CDs, and retirements accounts are

all eligible; and, there is no limit on the contribution

amounts! Contributions are calculated at 1/2% on

Checking balances and 1/4% on Savings, Money Market,

CD and IRA balances. (New accounts

opened with TD also can qualify for

affinity membership status.)
