IMPACTOF THE

BIG EAST

“Unbelievable! The BIG EAST exceeded all our expectations. The BIG EAST is great competition, exposure on an unprecedented

national scale and pure class. We appreciate Commissioner Michael Tranghese and his entire staff for embracing us, our city and our campus.

It’s been a privilege being a member.”

TOM JURICHVICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS

In August of 2006, the BIG EAST Conference and ESPN announced an innovative and creative television and publicity deals that will extend the relationship between the league and the network’s vast array of media outlets through the 2013-2014 academic year.

“This is one of the most significant events in the 27 year history of the BIG EAST,” said Commissioner Mike Tranghese. “The national exposure our member institutions will receive will be unprecedented. I’d like to thank the hard work of Tom Jurich and the BIG EAST Television Negotiating Committee for the leadership, assistance and support in reaching this historic agreement.”

The agreement will expand the already extensive coverage of BIG EAST Football and Women’s Basketball as well as ensuring the BIG EAST remain the most televised conference in the country for men’s basketball.

NATIONAL MEDIA EXPOSURE

The University of Louisville Athletic Department continues to receive unprecedented national and regional media coverage, not only for the football and men’s basketball program but for its Olympic Sports as well.

The first year in the BIG EAST Conference also gave the Cardinals an opportunity to perform in front of a new audience – sports fans up and down the East Coast of the United States. This coverage, if converted to advertising dollars, brought the department and the University millions of dollars worth of exposure to prospective students, student-athletes and fans around the United States.

“The BIG EAST gave us an unprecedented national stage for exposure. America is seeing Louisville and its city like never before in the largest

markets in this nation. From New York City to D.C. to Philly to Tampa and back, it’s a whole new platform for Cardinal Athletics.”

CARDINALSIN THE

COMMUNITYIt is our pleasure to serve the community that serves us so well. Our L-Care program puts athletes into the community with CardsFIT. Through our community outreach programs, our athletes have amassed 3,000 service hours and served 109 organizations and touched thousands of lives. Our partnership with Women4Women and the implementation of the grant-winning program Fit-4-Me took the message of health and fitness to the underserved parts of our community.

“Our touch in the community will always be one of my top priorities. It’s not just about the scoreboard but about the chance to help others, be enriched and give back. Our student-athletes love their time in the community because they know how much the community gives to them.”

“We have tremendous support from so many but our “partners” give us an edge that’s been critical.Adidas made a national

statement when they made us a signature property

and one of their premier programs. Nelligan Sports Marketing brings a whole

new level of support for the Cardinal athletes. Jewish

Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare Services was

there from the beginning and sets a standard

for excellence that sets them and us apart from

everyone. Women4Women has created a link for our

female students that will set the stage for phenomenal women. We’re grateful to

each of our partners for their support and affiliation with the Cardinal family.”

“We’ve done a lot but there is much more still to do, starting with the Papa John’s Football Stadium expansion. Our feasibility study and survey is underway. We’ve broken ground on the Yum! Center, the new basketball,

volleyball, and lacrosse practice facility. We’ll build a state-of-the-art field hockey complex with permanent seating and an Olympic weight room for all our sports and a new academic services center. We have

great opportunities in front of us to make this the Best College Sports Town in America.”

“What’s important to us is that we build and maintain five-star, state-of-the-art facilities for our programs. This allows us to recruit and retain the finest student-athletes.

We’re proud of the extraordinary venues that have been built and look forward to more on the horizon that meet the needs of our student-athletes and the community at large.”

Since retirement, this football alum and his wife have been able to stay active by dividing their time between attending U of L Athletic events and their grandchildren’s activities. “By participating in the Volunteer Representative Program we are able to continue to support Cardinal Athletics by contributing our time and effort for various events. ” The Sturtzels view the Rep Program as a way to feel like you’re a part of the team; and be able to be involved with promoting all men’s and women’s athletics, and ultimately encourage continued success. The Rep Program allows the Sturtzels to meet other Cardinal fans and share in each other’s devotion to cheer on their favorite team.
