Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.

For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?" The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.

The first reading for this Sunday is from 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12, it is the story of Solomon having a dream in which God’s asks him, "Ask something of me and I will give it to you." Solomon does not respond in the typical manner of, “please give me a bigger army, or please give me more wealth, power, prestige, a longer life, etc. No, rather he thinks of others when God grants him a wish. Think for a moment if you truly found a genie bottle and lo behold there is Barbara Eden (those of old to remember I Dream of Genie), anyway, I digress, please forgive me. If you found a genie bottle and a genie comes forth and in this case grants you one wish what would you ask for? It’s a good question, for I am sure we could all use more than one thing. Nevertheless, we would have to contemplate and think it over wisely, what do I need that is of immense importance. For starters, I may think of youth, health, wealth, peace and quiet, or I may ask for a favor for a loved one, for their health and prosperity. Solomon on the other hand really thought of others, and yet still of himself. He realized he had big shoes to fill, that of his father David, and not only big shoes to fill, but this great amount of people. Who could govern and lead them all? I am sure he heard complaints, people’s grievances, troubles, finance issues, land problems, farms, produce, animals

for feeding, security and safety issues, who to trust, etc. So he did think of his country folk when he asked for right judgment and wisdom to lead, because he thought of the people first, but not excluding himself, since he was the one that would still have to carry out the governance of Israel. So, we too like Solomon are asked, maybe in not such a dramatic fashion as was he, but we are still asked by God, “what do you want?” We are supposed to respond and make requests\petitions. So make your requests and let them be as high as the heavens, God is listening, and He will respond, sometimes in the exact way we think, in other ways He may respond indirectly or in way we never imagined.

Remember you have the Genie bottle in your hands and the genie in your heart, He is called the Holy Spirit. Remember to ask, but when asking have also the heart of Solomon.

God bless you,

Father John

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”

- ROMANS 8:28

Do you really trust God? Do you believe that all things work for good? Stewardship is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, means that God’s plan for our lives may be different than our plan. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.
