    Note to the teacher:

    Throughout the Test Book, the

    language used alternates

between short forms and longforms. This has been done in an

effort to expose students to both

    forms.

    When marking your students'

    work, accept both short forms

    and long forms as answers.

    Careers: three interviewsBY LINDA MACRIDGE

    A. VET

I suppose it was my love for animals that made me decide on

this job, says Dr John Gordon. The necessary qualifications

include a university degree, but if you dont love animals you

cant really do it. The salary is not as high as many people

believe and very often I have to visit farms away from the

village I work in. Sometimes there are risks. I remember once

when a pet snake attacked me! However, nothing compares

    to helping an animal.

    B. POLICE DETECTIVE

Although to most of us this job sounds exciting, police

detective Chris Collins believes that there isnt so much

glamour. Working long hours and getting a low salary are

not what most young people dream of. People often believe

we are very famous. The truth is that the newspapers rarely

write anything about us. Our job doesnt always have

successes. You need to be a strong person to survive the

pressure and you should have a good memory and a clear

mind. However, when you solve a mystery, you feel excited.

    C. ARCHITECT

Its a difficult time for architects. You can be unemployed for

a long time after your university studies, but if youre lucky at

the interview and youre talented, you can become very

successful and earn a lot of money. Although computers

make the job much easier, you have to come up with

    original ideas, says Tim Burton.

In which paragraph does it say that ...

1 ___ the job offers a high salary?

    2 ___ computers are helpful?

3 ___ you dont become as famous as people believe?

Is there intelligence anywhere else? Many believe that we are the only intelligent creatures in the

    galaxy. But is this so?

While huge cities, original inventions and a comfortable lifestyle are

all signs of intelligence, some people argue that the destruction of

our environment is a sign of stupidity. However, everybody agrees

that no other creature on the planet has achieved so many things.

On the other hand, the Earth is only one of countless planets in

space. Some scientists believe that life may have existed on Mars,

so why not elsewhere? Although it may be difficult for us to

imagine alien creatures, it doesnt mean they are not real!

It may be too early to say, but it would be fascinating to know that

there are creatures out there who can think.

    Ads everywhere1 ___

Ads are everywhere. Theyre in newspapers, on the streets,

on the Internet, on television and radio. Theyre so

common we dont always notice them!

    2 ___

Advertising a product or a service can be good for a

company. If the product wasnt advertised, nobody would

know about it and nobody would buy it. If companies sell

their goods or services, then there is more work and more

    people can find a job.

    3 ___

Another advantage is the low cost of the media. If they

didnt have adverts, newspapers and magazines would be

more expensive and fewer people would buy them. Many

TV and radio stations would close down because they

wouldnt have enough money to survive.

    4 ___

However, many people often complain about the poor

quality of adverts. They believe that adverts tell lies and

they just try to make people buy things they dont want. Its

certainly true that ads often promise that if you buy a

certain product youll be happier. Its rarely true of course!

    5 ___

People should use their intelligence. We shouldnt believe

everything that adverts tell us and we should ask ourselves

if we really need whats being advertised.
