The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs participate in a double round robin tournament of ten rounds. The tournament takes place at the Leiden University and is organized by the ICGA, LIACS and LCDS. The sponsors are Google, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the municipality of Leiden, Leiden University, Faculty of Science, ICGA, iSSC, SurfSara, Digital Game Technology and NWO Exact Sciences. It is held in conjunction with the 19th Computer Olympiad and the 15th Advances in Computer Games conference.

Round 1The pairing for the first round and the results were as follows:

Hiarcs – Jonny 0-1Raptor – Shredder 0-1Komodo – GridGinkgo 1-0

Being the world champion means that in the first round all eyes were directed on Jonny. During the opening Jonny was welcomed with applause. During drawing of lots Jonny was privileged to be the first to take its number. By the way it was number 6. Then the round started. Hiarcs played white and the game had the following opening moves 1. d4, d5 2. c4, c6 3. g3. In this position the world champion among programs was out of book and took 41 minutes for its reply. In the end the move was nothing else then 3. dxc4. Of course Jonny had computed many consequences and played the next 20 moves rather fast. On move 25 Hiarcs had spent 15 minutes of thinking time more than Jonny. Meanwhile the game had been exciting. On move 19 white decided to open the position since it believed that it could achieve advantage by opening the f-file and using the diagonal c8-h3. On move 20 black played the ingenious move Bg5, which after capture and recapture led to the position exhibited in the diagram. White played Nf6+ winning the black queen for a piece and a rook. The resultant position was evaluated as draw by both programs. However evaluations are different from playing moves. The innocent looking move 31. e3 turned out to be the decisive mistake, since it gave black the dominant position on all white squares. The only point of attention for black was not to exchange the rooks since RRB versus QR is stronger than RB versus Q for the side without the queen. Jonny exploited the opportunities given to the program excellently. This game promised an exciting tournament.

In the game Raptor – Shredder a closed Catalan was the start of tough fight. White played ambitiously and sacrificed a pawn for some play on the kingside. There was no real threat but white managed to enter the black position with his knight. It looked convincingly. However black sacrificed the exchange (see diagram Figure 2) and gained a second pawn. That was a good decision since from then on the position can be considered a win for black. Play by Shredder was impeccable and the win fully deserved.

Figure 2 Position after 20. … Ba6

The game Komodo – GridGinkgo show the intricacies of the English Four Knights opening. White played dynamically but black countered very well and seems to have a quite acceptable position. In a difficult middlegame white maneuvered adequately, but nothing seemed to be special. However white computed quite deeply and found an interesting move 25. g5 (see diagram Figure 3) which opened the g-line towards the black king and underlined the weaknesses of h6

and f6. Yet, black defended his position ingeniously. For a long time the white bishop on h6 seemed to be on the wrong square. Here again white had computed the position and the corresponding variations very accurately. It brought Komodo the first win in this tournament.

Round 2The pairing and results for the second round:

Jonny – GridGinkgo ½-½Shredder – Komodo ½-½Hiarcs – Raptor 1-0

It is fascinating how creative computers nowadays play. In comparison to human players they almost in exhaustively continue to find new ways to confront the opponent with challenges to overcome. World champion Jonny is a front-runner in this play style. In its game against GridGinkgo Jonny followed the lines of the well-known Bogo-Indian opening. Obviously black was well prepared and many inventive attacks of squares by Jonny was answered by adequate counter play. In the diagram position Jonny started an attack on the king side, mainly in order to gain territory. Black regrouped its pieces to a sufficient extent and countered by threats of invading the white position. In human terms the game went up and down but in computer terms we may assume that the computers had a deep understanding of the position. And therefore we must conclude that the computers saw almost everything. Whatever the trials performed at both sides the equilibrium was never broken which led to a well-deserved draw.

Figure 4 Jonny – GridGinkgo Position after 47. g4

The game Shredder - Komodo started as a Gruenfeld, Schlechter variation. Both sides played the opening along the usual lines. Shredder gained a pawn and tried to keep that pawn as an asset for a win in the far future. White was even able to run with the passed b-pawn along the b-file. The only possibility for black was a counter attack on the queenside. The attack was not really furious but black was able to exchange many pawns at that side of the board. The limited number of pieces led to a very interesting endgame. White was still a pawn up, black had the advantage of mobile pieces. The activity of the black pieces guaranteed sufficient counter play. When white tried too much it compromised its position (see diagram Figure 5). However the material advantage was not enough for black to win. The result was that bishop plus pawn against bishop plus bishop ended in a draw.

Figure 5 Position after 44. Nc6

In the game Hiarcs – Raptor we saw an unequal fight. The stronger side played the opening very well and entered the midgame with a comfortable position.

Black had to take into account many possible invasions. For a long time it looked that black had a reply on all the white attacks. But in reality its position became weaker and weaker. White continued to play well (see diagram Figure 6) and succeeded in penetrating the black position with king and rook. Accordingly black resigned.

Round 3

The pairing and the results for the third round:

Raptor – Jonny 0-1Komodo – Hiarcs 1-0GridGinkgo – Shredder 0-1

Raptor played a quiet opening against the world champion. It is called Guioco Piano and has an Italian snit. Although the forces at both sides came in a late moment in contact with each other, it was clear that black collected in that phase all kinds of small advantages. Move 18. cxb4 (see diagram Figure 7) was the start of two weak moves in succession. With the second capture on b4 white definitely was facing weaknesses at its queenside. Possibly 18. c4 was a better move. The advantage so achieved was sufficient for Jonny to exploit to its full extent. Without any doubt black managed to achieve a full point from this encounter.

Komodo – Hiarcs was a game between two tough opponents. Both programs have their credits and clash of ideas was expected. The game started smoothly with an English opening and for a long time the main motive of the game was not clear. However on move 27 white played f4-f5 (see diagram Figure 8) which opened the possibility of a king walk into the black position. This dominant feature decided the game. The continuation as follows by black underlines the idea and we see that penetration is more important than capturing a pawn. The way white completed the game deserves applause.

Figure 8 Position after 26. … Kf7

It is astonishing to see how Shredder harmoniously combines strong moves into plans and vice versa extracts from plans designed earlier strong moves. In the game against GridGinkgo the spectator is already from the beginning captured by the sequences of moves. After a sequence of four or five moves the spectator realizes that he has seen a nice plan. The sequence of plans then is a natural

view, which has everything to do with playing strength. Shredder is a very strong program. For those who did not know that this game is a telling example. In particular the final is a beauty for the eye. See the diagram Figure 9 and enjoy the move 46. … Qf2. The game is over. Compliments for Shredder!

Round 4

The pairing and the results for the fourth round:

Jonny – Shredder 1-0Hiarcs – GridGinkgo ½-½Raptor – Komodo ½-½

The game between Jonny and Shredder started as a Semi-Slav. The exchange of bishop against a knight in the end of the opening phase is well-known. Still it gave white the small advantage of having two bishops. Later it became even more relevant since the other black bishop was also exchanged against the knight. Having the pair of bishops is a clear advantage in positions as appeared on the board. Never the less fight could have go on when black had taken the right decision on move 31 by playing 31. … Kh7 (see diagram). After the move played Kh8 white had a clear advantage and managed to transform this is in a win.

7

Page 8: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

The game Hiarcs – GridGinkgo started slowly by the Italian opening Guico Piano. The pieces found their places and also found possibilities to be exchanged. It looked like an easy draw. But all of a sudden on move 42 white started with marching the king towards the opponent king by playing Kh2-g3-g4-g5. It was a surprising maneuver (see diagram). The freeing move was g2-g4. The recapture by the king brought things back to normal situations. This implied material balance and positional equality. So the game ended in a draw.

The game Raptor – Komodo started full of expectations since the Staunton Gambit was played. Both sides followed the theoretical line which is known to lead to equal play. Both programs did know the strategic lines to be followed. But as we all know the challenge of chess in its subtleties. Black tried to out-class white in a tactical way. However white took the pawns offered to him and decided to defend as best as possible. Since white did well black decided to look for a repetition and found it on move 30 (see diagram) by forcing a direct repetition of moves. So the game ended in a draw.

8

Standing after four rounds: 1. Jonny 3.5; 2. Komodo 3; 3. Shredder 2.5; 4. Hiarcs 1.5; 5. GridGinkgo 1; 6. Raptor 0.5.

Round 5

The pairing and the results for the fifth round:

Komodo – Jonny 1-0GridGinkgo – Raptor 1-0Shredder – Hiarcs 1-0

Chess is a game of sequences of moves. The sequence should be good which implies that the moves in the sequence should be good. From this statement it is clear that a good move should belong the sequence (the strategic idea chosen) that is relevant for the position. This statement is certainly true for the game Komodo – Jonny. Komodo played the right moves in connection with each other whereas play by Jonny can be characterized producing good moves without assuring that the moves have the acquired strategic connection. So it happened that Jonny came in a worse position. In that position it then did not play the best move, namely 45. Ke8-f8 (see diagram). This allowed white to bring the bishop from e3 to a3 from where it had the black king directly under fire. The advantage so achieved was sufficient for a white win.

9

Page 10: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

In the game GridGinkgo – Raptor the opening was strategic and the game showed for a long time equality. Black requested for a decision on the white center. GridGinkgo took an unusual decision by giving up the direct influence in the center by capturing on c5. Now a subtle exchange of strategies took place. Black did not recapture but used the pawn for attempting to increase the tension on that part of the board (see diagram after Bf6). Supervisually it looked ok because black had rather good compensation. Never the less white found ways to keep the pawn, recover the position and enable some exchanges. The more exchanges appeared on the board, the more valuable the advantage of the pawn became. Finally it was key to the white win.

The game Shredder – Hiarcs was a Semi Slav. From the opening black had to fight for an equal position. For a long time he seemed to succeed. However the more the game progressed the more stronger means had to be taken to keep equality. A well thought temporarily sacrifice of the pawn seemed to free his position (see

10

Page 11: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

diagram before c6-c5). Yet white had seen more deeply and after black had regained the pawn we saw a slightly advantage for white. Now Shredder showed its power. The small advantage became steadily larger and finally it was transferred into a position with a pawn up. That position required utmost care but Shredder showed to be a master in such configurations and won the game deservedly.

Standing after five rounds: 1. Komodo 4; 2. Jonny, Shredder 3.5; 4. GridGinkgo 2; 5. Hiarcs 1.5; 6. Raptor 0.5.

Round 6

The pairing and results for the sixth round:

Jonny – Hiarcs 1-0Shredder – Raptor 1-0GridGinkgo – Komodo ½-½

The game Jonny – Hiarcs is a nice example for people who believe of the strength of two well coordinated knights in relation to a pair of bishops. In this game Jonny was the conductor of the knights. The bishops were outclassed and the knights created threats, dangers and destruction. A telling situation is given in the diagrammed position. Black might have envisaged that he now could eliminate one of the knights but the pawn on f5 is even stronger. For Jonny it was an easy game, for the public it is nice to replay the game to see the techniques available to the program. Jonny took a direct way to the win.

11

Page 12: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

Shredder saw its opponent playing the Kings Indian. It is one of the difficult openings in chess. Raptor playing black reached a normal midgame with kings Indian characteristics. In that situation the real fight began. White was forced to play its rook over the d-file. The program did so with nice combination. It gained the small exchange in return to two pawns (see diagram before g2-g4). However the white evaluation of the resulting position was superior. The pawns did not have any impact whereas the two pieces were superior to the rook. Shredder outplayed Raptor in this phase and brought the full point home.

The game GridGinkgo – Komodo showed that the Leningrad variation of the Dutch opening is still playable. It resulted in a direct fight which was strategic in general and only sometimes locally tactical. Both programs were well prepared and took into account the opponent’s ideas. Anticipation played a nice role but some would argue that anticipation is prophylactic and therefore there was never a real clash in this game. On move 41 (see diagram) black tried to change the character of the position by playing 41. … Nc3. Although white accepted the

challenge and we saw a new pawn structure with new strong and weak points it did not have any impact on the winning chances on either sides. After some fifty more moves the game ended in a draw by repetition.

Standing after six rounds: 1. Komodo, Jonny, Shredder 4.5; 4. GridGinkgo 2.5; 5. Hiarcs 1.5; 6. Raptor 0.5.

Round 7

The pairing and results for the seventh round:

GridGinkgo – Jonny 0-1Komodo – Shredder ½-½Raptor – Hiarcs ½-½

In the game GridGinkgo – Jonny the Ruy Lopez dominated the position up to far in the middlegame. White was a pawn up (double pawn) but black had dynamic play for its pieces. The evaluations of the position was clear: some small advantage for black. However the question is how to materialize such an advantage. For instance the two black bishops are in this game stronger than the two knights but expressing this advantage in a substantial token relevant for winning the game is difficult. Yet black found a nice idea which started its realization on move 51 (see diagram) by playing g7-g5 followed by g5-g4 and thereafter destroying the white pawn structure. From that point onwards the win transpired slowly but definitely on the board. A nice performance by Jonny.

13

Page 14: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

Komodo – Shredder started as a real fight with Sicilian flavor. By a move to move evaluation it might be possible to find some waves above zero and under zero. The general impression for readers is however that this game is a game of equal forces. It is nice to see the trials from both sides to achieve some advantage but the opponent turned out to be of equal strength. Still black seem to manage a slight advantage by a better constructure and a good consolidation of what has been achieved. White must have noticed this also and decided to take an exit that leads to a draw. In did so by a rook sacrifice (see diagram) followed by a perpetual check.

Some drawn games are the result of quiet play. Others are the result of furious trials to make something out of it. The game Raptor – Hiarcs belongs to the last category. Hiarcs played for the win. This is most observable in the diagram position where play proceeded as follows: 24. … Qg5 25. Rxb7, Bxh3 26. Bf1. However the attempt did work out well, i.e., black was unable to provide an adequate follow up from his threats towards the white king. After this

14

intermezzo the game resumed by some exchanges of pieces and finally an end game was reached were the programs agreed to a draw.

Standing after seven rounds: 1. Jonny 5.5; 2. Komodo, Shredder 5; 4. GridGinkgo 2.5; 5. Hiarcs 2; 6. Raptor 1.

Round 8

The pairing and results for the eight round:

Jonny – Raptor 1-0Hiarcs – Komodo 0-1Shredder – GridGinkgo ½-½

Jonny – Raptor was a Queens Gambit Accepted. The variations are well known and the moves played are almost never new. Still both contenders manage to leave the trodden paths. World champion Jonny believed that this was the opponent that could be walked over by a simple attack. Therefore it played 16. Bxh6 (see diagram). Matters were not as simple as envisioned but the inventive play by white secured the win which took place on move 53. Jonny established by this win his front rank position.

15

Page 16: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

Hiarcs – Komodo was a Caro-Kann game of old snit. Having seen the whole game it looks better to call this game the game of double pawns and triple pawns. It started in the opening when white took the knight on a6 with its bishop. Black tried to take the initiative and looked for a weak spot in the white position. There were two or three spots but they were unreachable. This implies that the fight was quiet balanced. At one moment black seemed to be on the lead but white managed to annihilate all threats. This pattern of black attempting to find weak spots and white defending all the spots continued up to the end of the game. There a fascinating finish was prepared. On move 79. … Qd2+ white made the wrong choice. He should have played 80. Kf1 but played instead the unfortunate move 80. Kg1. The difference was draw (Kf1) or loss (Kg1). As the game continued black played well and white had no opportunity to stop the avalanche.

Nowadays programs are able to look far ahead. Thus complex situations for human beings may turn out not to be complex for programs since they look over the complexities to new quiet situations. This happened in the game Shredder –

16

Page 17: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

GridGinkgo. After a quiet Semi Slav opening both players positioned their pieces on squares to be thought the best ones. In a complex position Shredder played 27. e4 (see diagram) with the aim to penetrate the black queen side wing, in particular capturing pawn b6. Humans will have difficulties to compute the value of the new position but computers precisely know what they are aiming at. After the first part of this combination a second part started in which rooks and more pawns disappeared from the board. The third step was an indirect exchange of another piece. It is fascinated to see how a straightforward end game was the result of this battlefield. The game ended in a draw.

Standing after eight rounds: 1. Jonny 6.5; 2. Komodo 6; 3. Shredder 5.5; 4. GridGinkgo 3; 5. Hiarcs 2; 6. Raptor 1.

Round 9

The pairing and result for the ninth round:

Shredder – Jonny ½-½GridGinkgo – Hiarcs ½-½Komodo – Raptor 1-0

Shredder – Jonny was the game between two old contestants. Still the authors of the programs have the right spirit to win a game from the friend opponent. That was also here the case. However enthusiasm in it self is not sufficient and during the game there was no opportunity for special accents. In the position diagrammed taking the e-pawn is impossible since at the end of the combination white has as a good defense Bd3xg6+, winning a rook on d8. As the game now progressed their were indirect exchanges of material, some of them are even impressive but all in all they did not change the final result. A draw was agreed after 48 moves.

17

Page 18: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

GridGinko – Hiarcs was a fascinating game for the players, for the spectators it is an exercise for playing the complete series of moves. More than 100 moves the players show that they have equal strength. Of course many small details can be highlighted but the finer details may be good for the programmer but the public is not interested in such details. The game started to be equal and finished in the same phase. The draw was deserved at both sides.

Komodo – Raptor was a game for the public. Not enormously exciting but entertaining and very instructive. The lesson learned came from the observation that three pieces are superior to a queen. Black thought to have a good deal by starting a nice combination on move 15. … e4. White replied by b3 and then black believed he could start his combination (see diagram) by 16. … exd3 17. Bxd3 Ndb4 18. axb4, Nxb4. However white had a surprise in store: 19. Bxg6 sacrificing the queen for three pieces. It was a good decision and although black delayed the loss somewhat, the win for white was unavoidable. Very well played by Komodo.

18

Page 19: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

Standing after nine rounds: 1. Komodo, Jonny 7; 3. Shredder 6; 4. GridGinkgo 3.5; 5. Hiarcs 2.5; 6. Raptor 1.

Round 10The pairing and result for the ninth round:

Jonny – Komodo ½-½Raptor – GridGinkgo ½-½Hiarcs – Shredder 0-1

Jonny – Komodo was a fight between two leaders. Both had 7points out of 9. This game should bring the decision on the world championship 2016. In retrospect it was the first one in a row of six games to follow. The opening was the Dutch Defense, Leningrad variation. Programs of this playing strength have extensive opening books and usually find their way easily. That was also the case here. Still both players had as the aim to win this last game of the tournament. After some exchanges white started to play inventive but black countered full heartedly. The picture brings you to a crucial position after 23. … f3. White decided to sacrifice a piece in order to set his money on the progress of the two passed pawns on the queenside. The overall result is white has three pawns for a black piece. Is this sufficient for the win? As the game went on it turned out that the two passed pawns on the queenside are very dangerous. They can only be stopped at a high price. When people replay the game they will enjoy the intricacies of the game in combination with what is coming in the area of games. As it went on the board we saw the following: the two pawns were dangerous but not sufficiently powerful to win the game. They only compensated the piece down but were not sufficient for a win. Draw was the final result which implies that after this game there was still no winner.

The game Raptor – GridGinkgo was a clear last round game. The computers had done their utmost during the tournament and now it was time for a fast game

19

Page 20: 22nd World Computer Chess Championships - icga.org  · Web view22nd World Computer Chess Championships. The 22nd World Computer Chess Championship started on June 27, 2016. Six programs

with not so much complications. Playing fast and exchanging all that was possible and not looking for complications was the parole. The result was a draw which both players considered as a good result.

The game Hiarcs – Shredder was still important for the final ranking. It started as a Sicilian game following a normal scheme. White had a good position but black countered intelligently and made several good decisions. Black was on its alert when white started to interrogate him directly by a sacrifice of a piece. See diagram after 23. Nd5. The continuation was exciting: 23. … exd5 24. exd5 Bxd5 25. Rxe7 Qxe7 26. Bxd5 Rc8 27. Re1 Qxe1 28. Qxe1 Nxd5. The resulted position is evaluated as favorable to black. In practice in turned out also realizable. The final material balance was a queen against two rooks. And there the two rooks showed to be superior.

So the final standing is: 1. Komodo, Jonny 7.5; 3. Shredder 7; 4. GridGinko 4; 5. Hiarcs 2.5; 6. Raptor 1.5.

Play-offsAs a consequence of the final standing it was impossible to announce a new world champion. Therefore a play-off was scheduled. The playing time 45 minutes plus 15 seconds per move for each side. As it turned out one play-off was not sufficient for announcing a new champion since it ended in a 1-1 score (two draws). Consequently a second play-off was scheduled. Now the playing time was 5 minutes plus 5 seconds per move. Again the outcome was 1-1 (two draws). Thus a third play-off had to be played. This play-off has as time control 3 minutes plus 5 seconds per move per side. It was the decisive play-off. The first game ended in a draw and the second game was a win for Komodo. By this result the program Komodo, once designed and implemented by Don Dailey, became the World Computer Chess Champion 2016. Our congratulations to the team and to Don’s widow.

First play-offKomodo – Jonny ½-½Jonny – Komodo ½-½

The first game was an exciting game. It started quietly with an Italian Guico Piano. Soon after the opening both programs regrouped their pieces and a real battle took place. In this battle black sacrificed its queen for a rook and a piece. Moreover he captured some pawns as extra compensation. Nevertheless the white queen was quite active and it was difficult for black to exploit his dynamically distributed pieces into a force that could make the difference. Finally white completed the game by a queen sacrifice (see diagram) that lead to a stalemate position.

The second game also had a surprise for the spectators on move 28 white sacrificed the exchange. Jonny captured an additional pawn and that was all. In fact it was not all because Jonny had two bishops and a rook and a pawn. That is usually considered as a stronger set of material forces than two rooks and one bishop. In the game it turned out to be of equal value. Later on black saw itself forced to return the material after which an equal position resulted. This position was agreed to be drawn.

Second play-offKomodo – Jonny ½-½Jonny – Komodo ½-½

The second play-off consisted of two blitz games. The first game was blitz game with two meanings, viz. the game was soon over and the exchange of pieces happened in very fast time span. The second game was rather similar to the first one: exchange of pieces and no real complications given to one of the contenders.

Third play-offJonny – Komodo ½-½Komodo – Jonny 1-0

The first game of the third play-off was a worthy successor of the previous four games. Play was acceptable, the outcome also, but the outcomes was not decisive as it was a draw. The final game brought the decision. The opening was a Guico Piano and the game followed this name. In the diagram position white started to ponder, Jonny expected that Komodo would castle to the king side. After that move the position was considered equal. To Jonny’s surprise Komodo castled to the queenside. Strategically seen that was the better decision since white has a majority of pawns on the kingside, namely 4 (e-h) against 3 (f-h). The idea is to make this pawns moving towards the black king. If we look where the black pawns stands, with respect to the minority at the kingside than we see the pawn on c7. This pawn is clearly subordinate to the white pawn at the kingside. So speaking on a high level it is not surprising that white won this game convincingly and deservedly. Congratulations to the new World Champion Komodo.
