Congratulations and a hearty thank you to all the committee members, volunteers, sponsors and advertisers who have

participated over the last 23 years! This charitable event has been an immense joy and could only have been this successful because of you. Thank you all!

The twenty-second annual Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally, which has raised more than $280,000 for youth programs on the Monterey Peninsula, will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017. Each year the event takes place on Friday of the Concours d’Elegance weekend at Pebble Beach and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca.

The Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally is geared for people who own and drive their own classic and vintage cars. The rally draws 5+ participants and 8,000 spectators line the rally route.

This year’s event marks the organizational transition from Pacific Grove Youth Action to Pacific Grove Rotary.

The Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally was started in 1995 as a fund raiser in support of the Pacific Grove Youth Center and other youth programs. Pacific Grove Rotary joined PG Youth Action nine years ago as a 50% partner for the rally organization. PG Rotary has provided volunteers and board member support.

Starting this year, PG Rotary will receive all the proceeds from the Rally and divide the funds between the PG Youth Center, or other City youth programs, and Rotary youth programs.

Additional information about the rally may be obtained by calling 831-372-3861 or online at www.pgautorally.org. Registration forms may be downloaded from the web site. Hotel and other visitor information are available by contacting the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-656-6650.

Motorcycle enthusiast William Lyons founded the Swallow Sidecar company in Blackpool, England in 1922. Swallow started building custom bodies on standard automobile chassis in 1927 and, after moving the business to Coventry, introduced its first complete model, the SS 1, in 1931.

The Jaguar name first appeared on an SS 2½-liter sports sedan in 1935. The company name was changed in 1945 to reflect the speed and sleek appearance associated with the feline breed.

SS Jaguar 2½ Liter Sedan (1937)

Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1966 and after a succession of owners became the Jaguar Land Rover unit of Tata Motors of India in 2009. Engineering and production remain in the UK. With current models XE, XF, XJ and the F-Type, Jaguar continues as one of the world’s leading luxury brands today.

XK120 (1950)

The Jaguar name is synonymous with visually stunning and technically ground-breaking high-performance engineering. Some of the most revered models include the XC 120 (1948) at the time the world’s fastest production car, C-type (1951), and the D-Type (1954) that took home first place at Le Mans 3 years in a row.

XK120C, renamed C-Type (1953)

Enzo Ferrari called the E-Type, introduced in 1961, “the most beautiful car ever made.” Of 18 special lightweight aluminum-bodied special GT racing versions planned, only 12 were produced in the 1960s. By reverse engineering and using modern technology, the Jaguar Heritage Division completed the run 50 years later.

Unveiled at Pebble Beach in 2014, with an all-aluminum 3.8 XK engine delivering 340 horsepower at 6,250 revs, the reborn Lightweight E-Type weighed in at just 2,292 pounds wet. Six customers paid more than $1 million each for one of the rarest cars on earth.

DISTRACTED DRIVING PROGRAM At Pacific Grove High School

Part of the funds generated by the Pacific Grove Rotary Concours Auto Rally will go towards bringing the Distracted Driving Program/Save a Life Tour to Pacific Grove High School. This program will be presented to PG High students from grades 9 through 12.

Driver distractions have joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious-injury crashes. The National Safety Council estimates that 25 percent of all crashes a year involve talking/texting on cell phones, according to statistics provided by the Save A Life Tour.

After listening to the program presenters and teachers, students can experience first- hand the devastating effects of drunk or distracted driving. The national “Save A Life Tour” has been developed to provide an interactive driving simulator that truly shows participants the grim reality of decisions and behavior made when driving. The program addresses the very real, and often fatal, consequences of poor choices that are made while under the influence and/or while distracted when driving.

PORSCHE AG MILESTONES

Porsche has always built strong, fast, beau ful automobiles that many categorize as their dream cars. Beginning in 1950, the 356 model, aff ec onately known as the “bathtub,” captured the spirit of Porsche in America. These early hand built cars laid the founda on for the marque’s spor ng reputa on and enabled the fi rm to develop as one of the world’s most respected manufacturers. In the fi eld of endurance racing no other manufacturer can claim a post-war compe on history as illustrious as Porsche. The 2016 “24 Hours of Le Mans,” arguably the most demanding of all, brought Porsche’s total number of wins to 18. The 22nd Pacifi c Grove Rotary Concours Auto Rally is pleased to celebrate Porsche as its featured marque.

On behalf of all members of the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove, Welcome.

The Rotary Club of Pacific Grove is an organization of energetic members of the community dedicated to local, national, and international service. We are proud of our partnership with Pacific Grove Youth Action, Inc. in organizing and running the annual Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally. Organized in 1995 by then mayor and Rotarian Jeanne Byrne to raise funds for local youth activities. The first few years endured the usual growing pains. We often joked that it would be easier and more financially successful for each of us to just chip in a couple of hundred dollars and be done with it. Fortunately, we moved ahead and have to date raised over $170,750 for local youth and charitable programs, such as:

Smiles for Life, a program developed by PG Rotary to provide orthodontic care for youth in need in our community

Sponsorship of a very active INTERACT Club at Pacific Grove High School Annual scholarships to four PGHS seniors Job Shadow Day, where PGHS students spend a half-day with Rotarians at their various

businesses, followed by lunch at our regular Rotary meeting Sponsorship of two PGHS juniors to Camp Royal, a Rotary-sponsored leadership camp

for the local Rotary district Sponsorship by the annual Pacific Grove Rotary Invitational Track Meet at PGHS, begun

in 1968 and held continuously since The providing of dictionaries to each 3rd grader in Pacific Grove elementary schools Sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 91

A few other hands on projects that club has completed are the refurbishing of the middle school Auditorium into the Pacific Grove Performing Art Center and remodeling “The Little House in Jewell Park” which was originally built by our club in 1952 and given to the city. The club also started the Home Team to help seniors with making minor home repairs, the I-Help dinners for the homeless, the annual Good Old Days parade, and the Dramatic Reading of the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July.

In addition to our local projects our club supports Rotary International projects, most notably the End Polio Campaign. As of January there are only two countries where polio still exists. The Rotary goal this year is complete eradication.

Please consider finding out more about our club at pgrotary.org and follow us on our monthly Rotary Butterfly page in the Monterey County Herald.

Matt Bosworth 2013-2014 President

On behalf of all members of the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove, Welcome.

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. The Rotary Club of Pacific Grove was established in 1948, and as we approach our 70th birthday, our members continue their dedication to local, national and international service.

This will be the 23rd year for the Pacific Grove Rotary Concours Auto Rally, which was originally organized by then-mayor and Rotarian, Jeanne Byrne, to raise funds for local youth activities. Through hard work and dedication by Jeanne, her staff, and the Pacific Grove Rotary Club, we have been able to raise over $250,000 for local youth and charitable programs, such as:

• Sponsorship of the annual PG Rotary Track Meet at PGHS; held continuously since 1968

• The donation of dictionaries to each 3rd grader in Pacific Grove elementary schools

• Annual scholarships to four PGHS seniors

• Sponsorship of the PG High School Mock Trial team

• Smiles for Life; a program developed by PG Rotary to provide orthodontic and dental care for youth in need in our community

• Sponsorship of the INTERACT Club at Pacific Grove High School

• Job Shadow Day; where PGHS students spend a half day with Rotarians at their various businesses, followed by lunch at the Rotary meeting

• Sponsorship of two PGHS juniors to Camp Royal, a Rotary sponsored week long leadership camp

In addition, we have supported the refurbishing of the PG Middle School Auditorium into the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center, and the remodeling of the “Little House in Jewell Park” which was originally built by our club in 1952 and given to the city. The club also participates in the I-HELP program which provides dinners for homeless men and women, the annual Good Old Days parade, the Dramatic Reading of the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at Christmas, and RotaCare, a free weekly medical clinic.

Our club supports Rotary International projects, most notably the “Eradication of Polio” campaign. As of May 2017, there are only two countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan) where polio still exists, with just 5 reported cases to date. Rotary’s goal is to eradicate the disease completely, and we are well on our way.

Please consider finding out more about our club at: pgrotary.org and follow us on our monthly Rotary Butterfly page in the Monterey County Herald.

Enjoy the Rally,

Tracy Perkins

The very first west coast-organized automobile club races took place in Monterey, California in August 1903. The drivers competed on an “ordinary, elliptical, single mile track” under the banner of the DEL MONTE RACETRACK built behind the Hotel del Monte, then known as “the most elegant hotel in the world” that today serves as the Naval Postgraduate School. A hill-climbing segment of the contest was decided up Carmel Hill on the road to Pacific Grove.Over eleven hundred society spectators gathered at the site to witness Pacific Coast history. Official speed and distance records were set, making it “the biggest and most successful automobile race ever held in Western America.”George Whittell, Jr., the winning driver of the French ‘Mors’ 24hp racer (whose car costs a mere $12,000 in 1903), broke a West Coast racing record of 1 min and 15 sec per mile at an average speed of a numbing 48 mph. These competitive ‘enthusiast’ races for gasoline and steam cars pre-empted the soon-to-be-famous New York/Long Island Vanderbilt Cup Races of 1904, the French Grand Prix at Le Mans, the UK’s Brooklands of 1906, and the Indianapolis 500 races of 1911.

The DEL MONTE AUTO CLUB MEET of 1903 was contested as a challenge cup race, in which the Automobile Clubs of California (Northern vs. Southern) offered a trophy to the winner of the race. Twelve racing entrant vehicles originated from eight different manufacturers. Competing were Mors, Peerless, Pope, Rambler, Stevens Duryea, Waltham,

White, and Winton. Drivers were Andrews, Arnold, Ellb, Fuller, Garbutt, Grothe, Hewston, Hotaling, Keenan, Keller, Kellogg, Luckhardt, Saunders and Whittell. As described in the San Francisco Chronicle: “The air reverberated with strange noises, like the bubbling of many city fire engines at night. There was the

“putty-putty” breathing of the smaller racers, the bigger “choo-choo” of the heavy machines, the loud explosive cough of the Mors French wonder which won the Paris-Vienna race of last year and the intermittent, pistol-like report from air blasts, while all the spectators greeted the swiftly passing racers with a wild discord of duck-quacking choruses from their automobile alarms horns.”Gregory Berkin is Producer/Director of “The Pebble Beach Experience,” a documentary film of over 100 years of automotive history in the Monterey area.
