Andrew North is consistently recognised as one of the country’s top Auctioneers. It is testament to his extraordinary auctioneering skills that he has made it into the fi nals of every Auction competition he has ever competed in. This year he is particularly delighted to have been acknowledged as the

National REINZ Auctioneer of the Year where Harcourts agents made up 3 of the top 4 fi nalists.

Andrew calls most of his Auctions from Devonport through to Takapuna and whilst he concedes property is easy to sell through this part of the world he has loved being able to develop his skills

working with some of the most savvy buyers and sellers in the country. The residents have all been so generous sharing information about the history and intricacies of the location. Often it is the little

things that make the biggest difference when trying to achieve a great result for a client.

Andrew remembers all too well the initial resistance to Auctions, particularly in Devonport where the Tender approach seemed in vogue. Now it could not be more different. Harcourts have worked hard to become the experts in this method of sale and it is one of the reasons that so many people

now want to work with Andrew North and Harcourts! If you are looking to sell by Auction we recommend you look to sell with Andrew - the REINZ Auctioneer of the Year.

A CCTV camera is being proposed as a means to curtail persistent vandalism to Dragonseat sculpture on Chinaman’s Hill.

The seat has been vandalised three times this summer, with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, police and local resident Lyndsay Brock working together to prevent future damage and find the culprits.

Each time numerous fins were knocked off the seat’s edge and were subsquently repaired by its creator, Henderson sculptor Karen Kennedy.

Local board chair Mike Cohen says he is very frustrated by the continuous vandalism of the seat. He said the list of suspects had been narrowed down and thought to be youths.

Cohen says he has approached New World owner/operator John Ashton about installing a CCTV camera on the supermarket roof.

Brock, local communinity constable Jackie Strickland and Cohen believe that members of the public are critical in helping to protect the seat. “These guys are making a lot of noise banging on the tiles and concrete, so if the

neighbours or people who pass by could call the police immediately, that would be very helpful,” says Cohen.

Brock says: “A loud shout of ‘Oi, what are you doing’, even from behind a closed curtain, can work wonders.”

The seat features a poem by Brock’s late daughter Kirin.

Brock is also appealing to the young skate-boarders who frequent the area. “Parents could ask them to help us protect the dragon,” she says. The seat was originally created with the help of many local primary school children.

Strickland says she has contacted Auckland Council to ensure the Chinaman’s Hill path is well lit to keep the seat visible after dark.

The sculpture has a long history of being dam-aged, particularly at its original, more remote location in Ngataringa Park. Between 2002 and 2009 it was vandalised 14 times.

When the Dragonseat was moved to China-man’s Hill in central Devonport in late 2009, the hope was that such vandalism would stop.

CCTV camera may be installed to combat sculpture vandalism

Extra police patrols to follow up on ru-mours of underage drinking and cannabis use at the Ngataringa Skatepark found the place quiet and orderly.

Devonport/Bayswater Community Con-stable Jackie Strickland says police had instigated the patrols after hearing through the “community grapevine” that alleged un-derage drinking and cannabis use occurred

Hallo, ‘allo, allo… not much going on at skatepark then regularly at the park.

Strickland says that police conducted extra patrols before Christmas and found “the skatepark has been very quiet.”

When Strickland walked through Ngatar-inga Park herself a few weeks ago, she found it in “pretty good shape with very little graf-fiti, very little rubbish lying around except for a few soft-drink and energy-drink cans.”

A man exposed himself to a young girl in Cheltenham last Monday.

At around 10am an unidentified woman noticed a 10-year-old girl who was upset and went to her aid.

The girl had been walking her dog with her older sister on Tainui Rd, when a man in a white

van got out of his vehicle and exposed himself, police say.

The girl ran away and the woman saw her and gave her a ride home. Police are investigating and need to speak to the woman who helped the young girl. Anyone with information should contact the North Shore CIB on 09 477 5261.

A clever canine has worked out a way to sidestep summer restrictions on dogs at Chel-tenham Beach – with a little help from her owner of course.

Black English Labrador Retriever Zoie swims along the entire length of the beach up to four times, and at a good speed. “I have never actually walked her on the beach,” says her owner John Lindeman.

Zoie likes to keep a 20 to 30 metre distance to the shore. Very occasionally someone briefly mistakes her for a shark, Lindeman says.

Seven years old, Zoie is the Lindeman’s family dog but John says he and wife Stephanie don’t think of her as a pet – she is just too smart. Zoie is a top-notch hunting dog known for her superior retrieving skills and fitness, which is partially due to her swimming regime. “She is part of our family, but when she is working she becomes a professional,” says Lindeman.

“I get invited to the most wonderful estates in Yorkshire, but it’s only because of her, not me. She is stronger than any other dog in the heather and high grasses there,” he says.

Highly trained, Zoie knows not to leave the house should Lindeman take the first step across the doorstep with his right foot. Only when he leads with his left foot will she follow him.

Zoie understands verbal and whistle com-mands as well as two sets of hand signals, one for short distance and another for long. When Lindeman talks to her, it is in a near whisper that keeps her alert. She waits to receive every command twice, looking for confirmation after the first one.

“One of the most important things to teach a lab is patience,” says Lindeman. When he feeds Zoie her evening meal, he leads with his right foot out of the house and she waits. After whispering “Food,” she bounds forward but turns to him for confirmation.

“I need to keep things interesting for her, so sometimes I say Frankfurter or Frankenstein before I say food again,” says Lindeman, who adds that Zoie knows the difference.

Dinner consists of a whole pilchard, a raw chicken breast, a piece of green tripe and a cup-ful of what Lindeman calls “guts,” a mixture he developed. It contains fruit, veges, oils and offal. Lindeman says her diet and regular swims are

Dog paddling around council restrictions

the perfect tonic for Zoie’s hips.Stephanie calls John a “dog whisperer.”

Books about dogs line a metre of his book-shelves and he is a big fan of New Zealand sheepdogs. “Their contribution to our economy is enormous,” he says.

Lindeman greatly values the social function of dogs, whether in a family, for people with-out kids or the elderly, and is concerned about increasing restrictions on dogs in New Zealand.

He and Stephanie take Zoie to the UK every year. “She flies with us and is very comfortable in cargo. When we arrive at Kings Cross Station, we pile our suitcases up. She sits on top waiting while we have a cup of coffee around the corner. When we get back there is always a little crowd of people around her,” he says.

The UK Pets Scheme allows dogs and cats to enter the UK from New Zealand without quarantine as long as a set of criteria is met.

Unconsented construction work has oc-curred at the multimillion-dollar clifftop residence at 84A Vauxhall Road despite Auckland Council being alerted to the breaches 18 months ago and in breach of stop work notices.

Since July 2013, Stephen Barrett seems to have re-piled and raised the pre-1944 building in Devonport’s Residential 3C zone by about a metre, removed all the original exterior cladding and roof material, substan-tially or completely reframed the building, increased the size of window frames and added an entrance hall close to the boundary with a neighbour.

Council compliance officers were alerted to the unconsented work in July 2013 by a member of the public and told Barrett to stop work then. (Barrett had just completed work to stabilize the eroding cliff face below the property, for which he had consent.)

Investigations by the Flagstaff reveal that in November 2013 and May and July 2014, council officers were again alerted to construction at 84A Vauxhall Rd. Barrett was ordered by council to stop work.

On December 15, 2014, council officers were alerted told to continued construction .They visited the property and asked Barrett

Building work on Vauxhall Rd continiues despite abatement notices

to stop work. When he ignored the request, they issued him with an Abatement Notice on December 18 for breaching the Resource Management Act in relation to the exterior of the dwelling. On Christmas Eve. Coun-cil also issued a second ‘Notice to Fix’ for breaching the Building Act.

Barrett now has until March 24 to comply with the notices, a council spokesperson says. “Mr Barrett has also been advised by the council’s building and compliance staff of the need to apply for building consent for any remedial works that would be triggered by non-compliant work and also to apply for building consent for any further works that are proposed,” says the spokesperson.

Meanwhile construction work at the property continues. Last week a new roof was being installed and insulated.

The Flagstaff has learned that Barrett has plans to develop the house into a three-bed-room home with a lounge/library facing the neighbours’ living areas, a media room and cellar bar in the basement, and a master suite in the roof space extended with dormers. A double garage is also proposed to sit about halfway down the driveway.

Attempts by The Flagstaff to contact Bar-rett were unsuccessful.

Car access to Mt Victoria will be restricted every night starting February 1, limiting tour-ist visits and creating possible difficulties for two of the mountain’s long-time tenants, the Devonport Bunker and Michael King Writ-ers Centre.

The gates at the bottom of the volcanic cone access road currently close only Thursday through Saturday at 8.30 pm in summer and 6.30 pm in winter. Starting in February, they will shut every night at 8 pm in summer and at 7 pm in winter.

The change came after the recently formed Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authori-ty (Maunga Authority) moved to make vehicle access to the 14 Auckland cones consistent, a letter received by stakeholders says.

Mt Vics tenants were not consulted prior to the announcement of the change, despite assurances they would be kept in the loop on management of the mountain.

They received a letter dated 5 January informing them of the new rules.

Concerts at the Bunker, a tenant of 46 years, are scheduled to fall on the nights the gates currently remain open.

North Shore councillor Chris Darby, a member of the Maunga Authority, says a meeting to discuss the effect on the Mt Vic tenants has been scheduled for late January.

Under the current timetable the Monday through Thursday half-hourly service from Auckland switches to hourly from 8pm, until the final ferry from town at 11.15pm

Confirming the extra sailing, Fullers Sales and Marketing Manager Dana Coote says their preferred start date for the new service is early February.

“We are in consultation with Auckland Transport around the connection of buses for this service and we hope to have an an-swer on this shortly,” Coote says. Auckland Transport confirmed they are working on bus connections for the new service.

Fullers’ services to Devonport have been

gradually increasing. Seven months ago, Fullers also officially timetabled quarter-hourly services from Auckland to Devonport following the 7:00, 7:30 and 8:00 am runs to Auckland, says Coote.

“Those services were previously only casually available but not timetabled.” Auck-land councillor Chris Darby, who has been a long-time advocate for Fullers to increase the night sailings, said he hopes the ferry operator will act in the same vein for the late evening runs to Stanley Bay.

“They travel via Bayswater and then head back to the city, which is a service that could also be timetabled,” he says.

Waterfront house on market for a pittance

Cheap as chips… Graeme Carter outside Devonport’s real estate steal of the century; a waterfront house for $12,000

A three-bedroom, two-bathroom water-front house that six months ago sold for more than $2 million is back on the market on TradeMe for $12,000.

But there is a small catch: it will have to be removed from its current site.

The house was built in 1953 by two sisters and was for many years divided into two flats. Six months ago, Graeme and Denise Carter from Takapuna bought the property with the view to retire. “My wife likes it in Devonport because of the view and the village,” says Graeme.

Graeme loves his new environment too. The former rugby player can walk to the Domain to watch North Shore play, has daily swims on the beach across the street and loves going for walks along the waterfront.

“I have started picking up quite a bit

of rubbish on my walks and recommend anyone else to do the same to help keep this place beautiful. It’s a lovely spot,” he says.

Denise and Graeme have consent to build a new house on the site at 49 King Edward Parade that will fit into Devonport’s heritage architecture.

“The house that’s there is a good house and we thought rather than demolish it, someone might be able to use it,” says Graeme. Should the house sell, all proceeds will go towards therapy and specialist treat-ment for one of their three grandchildren, who has cerebral palsy, he says.

• As the house is built after 1940 it does not have automatic heritage zone protection and a council spokesman, confirming the consent to demolish the home, said it had no heritage value.

Even though Andrew Scott lives down a long driveway off King Edward Parade, his backyard has recently felt a little less private thanks to aerial drones.

Aerial drones are relatively new gadgets only loosely regulated by aviation law. Scott worries they are a threat to people’s privacy and that they could be the perfect tool for burglars.

Back in September, Scott’s wife Nicola was hanging up the washing when a drone startled her. “It was looking straight at her and then skirted the hedge along our fence line, looking into the house,” he says.

The Scotts didn’t like it. “The thing is that the pilot of a drone can be outside its line of sight,” because they can use the camera on the

Coming to a backyard near you?

device to navigate, says Scott.Soon after, Scott saw a second drone hov-

ering in the backyards between Cambridge Terrace and Duders Ave and heard a third in a neighbour’s front yard. The next day, his neighbour’s house was burgled and Scott mentioned the drones to the police.

He also got talking to a Williamson Ave resident about it. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, says she found a drone flying inside her courtyard and looking into her house late morning last August. Like Scott, she lives down a long driveway.

“It was deliberate and aggressive. The noise was there for about ten minutes before my dog came and got me. Until then I had thought it was a weed eater or something.“I pointed

straight at the camera and called the police and as soon as I did that, the drone went up fast vertical and left towards the coast,” she says.

“The police considered it suspicious and logged the complaint,” she says.

North Shore Police Senior Sergeant Scott Cunningham told the Flagstaff he wasn’t aware of any other specific incidents in the area.

However Cunningham says drones are increasingly used for promotional purposes at events and by real estate agents.

“But we take anything where someone’s privacy is being breached very seriously and follow it up,” he says.

Cunningham encourages anyone with an unusual experience concerning drones to call the North Shore Policing Centre at 477 5000.

ADOPTA GREYHOUND

I would like to congratulate the Devonport Community Board or whomever is respon-sible for placing the great lights in the trees along the street in Devonport. They are a lovely addition to Devonport and greatly enhance the area. They definitely add a bit of sparkle!!!!

Well done and about time.Jill Goddard

• The lights were the idea of new Devonport BID Manager Judy Grieve, Editor

The Flagstaff report (Dec 12) on the refusal of Auckland Transport staff to attend local board workshops unless the public and press were excluded is appalling. It just highlights the unfortunately minor role the local boards play in the overall council scheme of things.

Chairman Mike Cohen should stiffen up his

conciliatory concern on the issue and bluntly advise the council CEO and Chairman of Auckland Transport that any officer refusing to attend a meeting arranged between Auckland Transport and the local board for any reason should be subject to normal employment dis-ciplinary process with an initial warning and dismissal for a repeated occurrence.

It is just not acceptable for council employ-ees to decide whether or not, or under what conditions, they will attend meetings of the elected representatives of the community.

Mike quite correctly states that early public exposure and scrutiny of projects can only be beneficial to Auckland Transport, and that Devonport in particular has an amazing depth of expertise, knowledge, and experience, as well as a lively passion for their community.

Recent bad experience with Auckland Trans-port projects, both in relevance and cost, only stresses the need for earlier and more effective community contact.

The “free and frank” discussion Auckland Transport aspire to must be in the open, not behind closed doors. Insisting on anything else is self-defeating, arrogant and indeed just plain dumb.Bill Rayner

Auckland Transport non-attendance at open meetings unacceptable

Thanks for the sparkle

Christmas lights, fantastic effort by the new force of the local people behind this. Next year we should Laser-Light Mount Victoria and North Head to draw interest and activity to our unique corner of the earth, or maybe the old building facades down Victoria Rd. It’s time to set goals for the new year planning to make Devonport a place everyone wants to come to. Let’s give the place some life.

Perhaps we could have a business or innova-tion of the year award to encourage more of the likes of what we’ve just seen. Well done to the organisers of this lighting project. How about a Ms Devonport pageant?

2014 wound up with some good and some bad. We must not lie idle and allow the free-hold giveaway of our harbourbed or giving the special housing designation on the Bayswater land that was sold for a song.

Devonport has not had immunity from cor-ruption and those that label us as a CATCH-MENT have not disappeared. That label offends me personally, as it is reflective of the minds of those that only see dollar signs and often give no regard to the community or conservation or the amenity values of our environment, yet alone the concept of sharing the wealth in our community.

Looming up next a cash cow made out of the elderly: the proposed Ryman retirement village on Ngati Whatua land. It will be the biggest,

ugliest monument of a structure ever seen in Devonport, other than the Navy buildings. It will tower over our gateway to Devonport for all to see from Lake Road , sold as if a service to the community, and those behind it are a similar mob to those who treat our seabeds as fair game.

The latest arrogance reported in the Flagstaff of Auckland Transport secret services people needs to be gunned down hard. 2015 needs to be a turning point – no more backroom deals, no more leaving sleeping dogs to lie, no more secrecy or closed meetings of politicians and their associated beneficiaries, no more contracts for selected cronies with council, paid for by ratepayers at outrageous prices.

Some things I’d like to see actioned: return the title of the seabed at Bayswater forthwith; fix the bottleneck at Bardia Rd /Lake Rd by adding a lane using the road space we have already got, which is lying almost empty down the centre for the odd person to turn right; consider putting the cycles on the outside of the paths; give the schools a pull-off bus stop on Takapuna Gram-mar’s front lawn. Just these changes could make a huge difference for small money, to relieve gross congestion – so bloody simple.

Apathy is the vehicle on which those in power rely upon in our village to run amok. I hope we all come out firing for Devonport in the New Year, and that more people – like the Christmas light organisers – come together to resolve all these simple issues we should not even be arguing about. Remember to shop locally all year and support the small guys as often as possible, and stand up and be counted for the things that we should preserve in our community. Happy New Year. Ron Dykman

Need to fight apathy in Devonport

Sandy and Relindis would like to thank all Paradox

customers for their support over the last couple of

years. We have loved every minute, so thanks.

…Best wishes to the new owners Rachel and Matthew.

I would like to draw your attention to the beautiful flower barrels outside Peter Raos Gallery, 2 Queens Parade.

They are absolutely stunning. With a few exceptions I wish the rest of our flowers bar-rels looked as good. Come on retailers, water your barrels and stop your plants from dying. Judy Machin

I was dismayed to discover that Plunket are discontinuing their car-seat facility at Devonport from early 2015. Soon it will be necessary to go to Constellation Drive to collect a seat. For those of us with grandchil-dren visiting from overseas, this has been an excellent facility and will be sorely missed. I wonder if Plunket could be persuaded to think again on this one.Lawrence Carter

This character home on a private and secure 506m² freehold site offers an idyllic Stanley Bay retreat

and seems far away from the hustle and bustle of the big City. Opportunity for extension and

modification abound here, and yet the home is suited to family life in its present condition with

good garden space to front and rear. This type of home is rarely available and could provide all the

comfort your family will ever need. The location is second to none with the highly sought after

Stanley Bay School just down the road, the local city-bound ferry and park a mere two minute stroll,

and all the amenities that Devonport has to offer within walking distance.

Local pole vaulting champ Eliza McCa-rtney (18) has been selected as one of four finalists for the Halberg Awards Emerging Talent category. McCartney achieved third place in the woman’s pole vault at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Oregon last year.

She currently holds the women’s senior re-cord in New Zealand with a vault of 4.45 m.

The $10,000 scholarship Emerging Tal-ent award for under-20-year-olds aims “to identify and assist a young athlete in their quest to become an Olympic and/or World Champion, and hopefully one day win the Halberg Award,” the event’s website states.

The other three finalists are road and track cyclist Regan Gough, mountain biker Sam Gaze and rower Zoe McBride.

A sound place to make music... Taking a break from recording at the Depot just before Christmas, The Warratahs: Nick Brown, Barry Saunders, Michael Knapp, and Nick Theobald. The Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS WELLINGTON has just completed her Southern Ocean patrol after spending a total of 44 days in the freezing and hostile Southern Ocean. The first half of the patrol—before Christmas—was conducted in the Ross Sea area monitoring the fishing vessels under the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

Following that, WELLINGTON was in Hobart conducting a logistics stop over the

Christmas and New Year period, allowing the crew to have some time off and relax and enjoy the many great sights of Hobart. Christmas Day was spent in the sun on the flight deck accompanied with a BBQ breakfast and a wonderfully prepared Christmas lunch made by the team of chefs on board, while opening presents given to the sailors by the ship and some presents that had arrived from back home.

The second half of the patrol then began with WELLINGTON headed to the Southern

Ocean to look for vessels fishing illegally. The operation proved an overwhelming success with WELLINGTON tenaciously finding, tracking and collecting evidence on three vessels conducting illegal fishing. Even during the intense operations, the crew kept busy with plenty of PT sessions and games and events on board. WELLINGTON is now en route back to New Zealand and all of the crew on board are looking forward to spending a delayed festive break with families and friends.

A family photo al-bum containing nu-merous Devonport shots has been found over the holiday pe-riod on Lake Rd, be-tween Hanlon Cres-cent and Seabreeze Rd.

Two photos are of classroom 2 at Devonport Primary school in 1978 and 1979.

Others are taken outside North Shore Cricket Club. A card inside the album says, “To Dad from Caleb, you are a superstar.”

The person who found the a lbum dropped it into the Flagstaff for safe-keeping.

One of the photos from the albumDevonport’s temporary library at 3 Victoria

Road closed last Wednesday in preparation to move across the street into the new library building that will open on February 2 at 9 am.

Children’s librarian June Swasbrook rang her handbell for the last time at the old prem-ises to alert patrons they were closing. The last to leave shouted “Have a good move” on her way out.

Library cat Benjamin arrived just in time to be part of the photo. Librarian Anne Bucholz said he was sensing that something is about to happen as boxes are starting to pile up in the back rooms. Benjamin will stay at the temporary library until the new library opens.

Library manager Sue Parr said the staff will spend the next two weeks packing and setting up in the new facility.

New services in the expanded Devonport Library will include bookchats, Minecraft, group iPad training and a teen hour.

Local mum, actress, screenwriter, cello player and former St Leo’s schoolteacher Maxine Cunliffe has landed the role of Hippolyta in the upcoming Summer Shakespeare production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Hippolyta comes from a tribe of fierce Amazo-nian women. The play starts with her imminent wedding to Theseus, the duke of Athens, and ends with her becoming queen of Athens.

This 52nd Summer Shakespeare opens on Valentine’s Day and runs until March 7.

It is directed by Michael Hurst and its cast is aged 18 to 94.

Devonport’s annual outdoor youth music festival found shelter in the Victoria Theatre as predicted stormy weather blew it off Wind-sor Reserve.

With a line-up of five young bands sched-uled to play on December 14, including locals TUBBS and Lorde’s younger sister India, event organisers were preparing to cancel the free event two days prior.

That’s until Depot Sound manager Dave Rhodes made an off-the-cuff suggestion. Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape says, “Dave and I thought it was a real long-shot that Philip Jaser (Vic manager) could find room for us at such short notice. But with the alternative of cancelling the show, I just gave him a call.”

Jaser instantly said he wanted to help but needed a bit of time to figure it out, says Teape. “He called me back late that night and said he would shuffle things around and Devonstock could have the main theatre,” she says.

Jaser says he was determined to help as the Vic is a community venue. “We even cancelled one show that didn’t have any pre-bookings and offered people to come to a later show of that movie and it worked out well,” he says.

The Rockfactory set up its sound system the night before, which meant that when the film in the main theatre finished on the dot of 4 pm, while the movie’s closing credits were still rolling, Devonstock was ready to start.

Teape had also asked for help from Downer Construction, the Marine Square contractor, who offered to post the location change on a traffic sign at the bottom of Victoria Rd.

Teape estimated around 700 young people attended Devonstock.

“Because everyone went out of their way to help, it turned into a great event,” she says.

Who needs a car when you can hop on the ferry and be home or in town in twenty minutes! It´s that easy in this waterfront location on Queens Parade, just a “hop skip and jump” from Devonport village shops, cafes and beach. The 1885 villa has been totally rebuilt from the ground up, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, three living rooms on two levels, and no expense spared in its authentic restoration by renowned architects Salmond Reed and builder Pete Wolfkamp (from ‘The Block’). There is so much more here than meets the eye, so sit back on the verandah and breathe in the stunning harbour and city views as you enjoy your waterfront wonder - a masterpiece of Devonport.
