Under 8’s Day
This week we celebrated all the wonderful things about being a child in U8s Day. We welcomed our friends from Oakenden and Homebush SS and shared in many fun activities. Children loved the jumping castle, face painting, art and craft. Thank you parents, guardians and senior leaders for helping the morning run smoothly.
WELCOME We welcome Mrs Maree Smith to our Swayneville teaching team. She has come with a wealth of experience and expertise in the early years. Don’t be a stranger and please introduce yourself to her and see the wonderful things she has in store for your children. We wish Natalie Westcott all the best with the birth of her baby.
Fruit Trees Reminder that children are not to pick fruit. These trees give us enough fruit to share around with everyone in our community and will be available in a tidy tray in undercover area.

The 2/3 class has been having lots of fun in
Science in term, exploring how pushes and pulls
affect how objects move and change. In
particular, we have been experimenting with
toys, sports equipment and even the
playground. This week we explored how
different surfaces and the strength of pushes
affected the distance travelled by different toy
cars. There were definitely some clear winners!
We cannot wait to share our own moving toy
creations at the end of term.

Self-esteem and self-confidence: Have you ever encountered someone who is so self-confident they never appear to have
self-doubt or question their ability to perform any task to a very high standard? That is rare and, if you do see it, as there can
be an element of arrogance and pride, you may think that a bit of humility in that person might not go astray.
I remember watching a young man sing on a talent show once. His family had told him he had a wonderful voice, to the judges
and even in my ignorant assessment, he lacked all things necessary for success. His family rallied around him, after the low
scores were given and, as he was buoyed by their unrealistic encouragement, the young man said he would continue to follow
his dream to be a famous singer. They all denied that the judges on that show were correct in their assessment of this young
man’s talent, skill and potential.
Now, in my opinion, that was blind stupidity bonded with ignorance. The family were not being honest with the young man
and were leading him into delusion through unrealistic self-confidence. That is a no win for anyone. No one would benefit from
this young man having his self-esteem destroyed because he lacked skill and ability in that area. What was needed was realistic
acknowledgement of lack of singing ability and, corrective action being taken to build the skills that were lacking, if he wished
to continue to follow that dream.
You see self-esteem is about liking yourself and who you are. This doesn’t mean being overconfident – just believing in yourself
and knowing what you do well. For children, self-esteem comes from knowing that they’re loved and that they belong to a
family and a community that values them. It also grows through spending quality time with their family and being encouraged
to try new things, finding things they’re good at and being praised for things that are important to them. All children are
individuals and they know what they are good at. Our role is to recognise, support, encourage and develop our children in their
individual life path with their individual skills. They win and we win when that happens.
