SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION

CONVERSION AS ONGOING PROCESS

Introduction: Einstein once said, “Everything has changed but our thinking. The mind is always the last WRNQRZ/LIHÀRZVFRQWLQXRXVO\EXWthe mind lags behind. It holds on to past moments, so it cannot catch the new that is happening. Loyalty to the mind is foolish. Consistent thinking, holding the same position now as we did earlier, has a high price tag. The spiritual adage is: the mind makes a good servant but a poor master. Too often we cling to what we think that it keeps us from attuning to the rhythms of life. (John Shea) “Amen I say to you, WD[ FROOHFWRUV DQG SURVWLWXWHV DUHentering the kingdom before you.” Today’s Gospel seems to disturb our societal order and undermine the whole reason for being good, living justly and observing standards, if WKH WD[ FROOHFWRUV DQG VLQQHUV ZLOObe ahead of the righteous. A closer UHÀHFWLRQ RI LW KRZHYHU VD\V LW LVthe ability to change one’s mind that Jesus emphasizes, an ability which the sinners have for they know their true status before God. who are despised, a new category of the poor. Jesus is actually addressing the high priests and elders. He wants to show those who are scandalized by his preference for sinners; that these are actually closer to salvation if they do penance than the people who considers them just. The targets of the parable then are those who close themselves against the Good news in the name of justice. Jesus gets them to know that God loves the rejected; they are capable of greater penance and obedience than the proud and self-VXI¿FLHQW%5HLG

Remember the renewal programs of the Church, the cursillo, life in the spirit seminar, the PREX, other regular retreats; how we feel we want to conquer the world by the new found strength! As a publican i.e., a collector of customs duties for King Herod Antipas at Capernaum, Matthew called Levi by two evangelists was widely despised by his fellow Jews and Gentiles alike as being not only a collaborator with the Roman enemy but as a traitor, a public sinner and a crook more interested in lining his own pocket than in being fair. As such he was banned by the Jews from communion, from marrying into their pious families and shunned in all society and trade affairs. Yet this was the man handpicked by Jesus Himself during the second year of His public ministry to be one of His selected 12 apostles. Some say that Jesus did this to show that the Good News he was bringing to the Gentiles and the Jews was for everyone – even the rejects of society. Even his original name of Levi which was changed to Matthew which means “Gift from or of God or Yahveh” or the gift of his own life to God was most likely given him by Jesus to mark the start of his new life. Matthew was a Galilean by birth but a Jew. While sitting at his customs SRVW RU WD[ RI¿FH LQ &DSHUQDXPby the Sea of Galilee Jesus, who had just cured a man sick of palsy, passing by called out to him, “Follow me. And he rose and followed him.” (Mt. 9: 9)7KLV*DOLOHDQ WD[FROOHFWRUZDVVRoverjoyed at his new respectable calling that he gave a great feast in his home for Jesus and his followers, even inviting some of his IHOORZ WD[JDWKHUHUV 1DWXUDOO\ WKLVcaused a lot of gossip. Jesus, to

the amazement of the Pharisees, not only scandalized them by attending but by comfortably eating LQ WKH FRPSDQ\ RI ³WD[ FROOHFWRUVand sinners.” When Jesus overhead their comments He said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” (Matthew 9:10, 13) This remark of Jesus has become one of the hallmarks of true Christianity. Matthew was one of the most obscure apostle as he never attracted attention to himself. He neither spoke a word, nor did he ever question the Lord, neither did he protest nor complain. Modest, quiet and anonymous he merely listened to the Master and followed Him. However he must have had some education for he knew both Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke) and Greek. Matthew is the most famous of the 12 apostles probably because one of the Gospels bears his name. It is believed that it was written only a few years after Jesus’ death (somewhere between A.D. 60 and 90) and in Syria at the entreaty of the Jewish converts who needed an DI¿UPDWLRQRIWKHLUQHZLGHQWLW\DVDpeople of God. However from the time it was ¿UVW SXEOLVKHG HYHU VLQFH WKH2nd century AD this Gospel has been the preferred “Gospel of the Church” not only being quoted more frequently by the church fathers EXW DOVR XVHG PRUH H[WHQVLYHO\ LQchurch worship. Matthew wrote his Gospel using his unusual gift of story telling in an easy style for public reading. Many claim that the gospel of St. Matthew is the most complete and accurate of the Gospels. He was a “meticulous chronicler” leaving us with a “faithful echo of Christ’s Incarnation and Redemption.” According to tradition Matthew remained in Jerusalem for 15 years after the Ascension becoming a missionary like his fellow apostles although unfortunately his efforts were not recorded. After evangelizing in Judea Matthew left in the year 42 to preach Christ in the nations of the East going as far as Ethiopia which is why he is called the Apostle of Ethiopia, Persia and Macedonia. He is supposed to have left because of the religious persecution under Herod Agrippa in the year 42. Around 74 he suffered

But this is a mistaken notion of holiness…” A saint is not superior to others; he can be very weak, with many mistakes in his life. What makes him different is that he keeps on struggling – getting up after each fall. He does not live extraordinary life. What makes him holy is the

At Rome he began to translate the holy Scriptures into Latin and to promote the monastic life. Eventually he settled in Bethlehem where he served the needs of the Church. He wrote many works, especially commentaries on holy Scripture. He died at Bethlehem in 420.

October 1Theresa of the Child Jesus, VirginSt. Theresa was born at Alencon in France in 1873. While still a young girl, she entered the Carmelite monastery at Lisieux. There she lived a life of humility, evangelical simplicity and trust in God. By word and example she taught these virtues to the novices of the community. October 4Francis of AssisiSt. Francis was born at Assisi in 1182. After a carefree youth, he renounced his paternal wealth and committed himself to God. He led a life of evangelical poverty and preached the love of God to all. He established a rule which a number of his companions followed and which gained the approval of the Holy See. Subsequently, he founded an order of nuns and a society of laypersons who practice penance while living in the world. He died in 1226.

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Lord, make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light and Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive – It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

HEALTH CARE MINISTRYWOMEN IN THE CHURCH

(EXCERPTS FROM FR. JESUS GALINDO’S RECOLLECTION TO THE HCM LADIES)

compiled by: Barbie YoungAs a daily churchgoer, it is quite evident that women outnumber the men during the Holy Eucharist of the mass. But why is it that women do not hold important positions in the church’s hierarchy?

In Jesus’ day, religious rules regarding women were already written down in the Mishna and the Talmud: women were to be shunned in public social contact, women did not have the right to be public witnesses in court cases, women were restricted from orally communicating the Torah to others, even to children, women were not allowed to be educated in the same schools as men. However, these religious limitations were not always found in the Old Testament. This is why Jesus reacted so strongly against the teachings of the elders because they were not Biblical.

Jesus’ attitude toward women became a liberating factor against these types of religious practices that were accepted in His day. He did the forbidden by ministering to both women and men. He conversed with the Samaritan woman at a well. In the house of Mary and Martha, he commended Mary for a better ministry. He gave the women, who were neglected by the teachers, a place of

assurance and hope. Women who were ostracized from society because of immoral practices were restored to ULJKWHRXVOLYLQJ¿QGLQJDQHZGHYRWLRQWR*RG

During the hours of Jesus’ Passion, the women were the RQHVZKRIROORZHG+LPWRWKHFURVVH[FHSWIRU-RKQ7KHwomen were brave enough to stay there in the open while the men stayed away hidden. Women were not only the ODVWRQHVDWWKH&URVVWKH\ZHUHDOVRWKH¿UVWRQHVDWWKHtomb during the Resurrection.

Ever since Eve, God has used women in some important UROHV$ZRPDQZDVWKH¿UVWWRVLQ$IDLWKIXOZRPDQZDVchosen for Christ’s birth to reverse the sin. They received spiritual gifts along with the men and served in them faithfully.

The New Testament does teach that both men and women received the gifts of the Holy Spirit without any distinction WR WKHLU VH[ RIPDOH RU IHPDOH *RGH[SHFWVZRPHQ WRdo ministry as men do ministry. However, it is a matter of in what capacity they serve. There are many Christian churches that forbid women in ministering in any capacity. Then there are many Christian churches that have allowed ZRPHQ LQ WKHRI¿FHRISDVWRUVDQGHOGHUV LQ WKHFKXUFKBut Jesus did not select any female apostle. “And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.” (Mark 6:7) Paul’s instruction of the leading and teaching ministry in the church also gives the responsibility to men. (Titus 1:5-9)

The Scripture is following the creation order of God from the Genesis account. A pastor has authority over the church as a husband has authority in the home. Women DUH IRUELGGHQ WR H[HUFLVH VXFK DXWKRULW\ RYHU D PDQ LQthe Church or home because a reversal of the creation order would take place. Eve was not to watch over Adam but Adam was to watch over Eve. However, both men and women can work harmoniously together in ministry and apostolate. “There is neither Jew or Greek, there is neither slave nor free. There is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)
