The EO replied that the uptake by membership had been slow up to the end of the Financial Year, but recently it has picked up considerably and recommended that members should have DNA parent verified applications submitted before the deadline closes on 31st October 2011 (ii) David Blackmore mentioned that at the previous conference, a certification scheme was proposed and asked where what is happening about it presently. The President replied that the Council will follow this up and commence liaison with the membership as there are indications that support for truth in labelling appears to be growing. (iii) David Blackmore asked if Council Minutes will be available for members to view. The President confirmed that Minutes will be displayed on the AWA website. (iv) David Blackmore mentioned that other breed associations have commenced BIN Progeny testing with joint MLA funding and asked what was happening with Wagyu. The President confirmed that the AWA did not have the resources to fund national progeny testing but that he had submitted an application with private funding. This is a similar situation to the Charolais BIN which is managed by individuals. However Joe Grose advised that the conditions for funding proposed by MLA have made it uneconomic so he is not proceeding. Support was expressed that the AWA should participate in a BIN project. 9. Close: The EO thanked everyone for attending and declared the meeting closed at 9:10 a.m.. ___ Signed by the Chairman, Joe Grose

President’s Report 2012
This year has seen many challenges for the Australian Wagyu Association, along with the development of a number of new and exciting ventures. Most parts of the country have experienced another very good year, with positive autumn and winter conditions helping cattle achieve the required growth rates and marking percentages. Spring in NSW and Queensland is turning dry, while parts of the south have continued to receive good rains. The strong range of Australian Wagyu and Wagyu cross-bred branded beef products has continued to grow the domestic markets. Branded boxed beef has also seen growth in the many export markets favouring Wagyu, including Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and the USA. Live exports to Japan have remained stable at around 13,000 head. A Five Year Strategic Plan was delivered to the members our last conference, and Council has a strong commitment to the fulfilling the plan. In the last year we have delivered on numerous targets including:
Migration to ILR2 for our registration and membership systems;
Initial development of documentation for breed standards that represent ideal conformation for Wagyu cattle in Australia; and
Continuing the expectation that animal welfare standards will be maintained by our members.
Also we have maintained our position that the industry and consumers need to understand the truth in labelling of Wagyu beef products. We consider that consumers in the future will demand the verification and/or certification of the Wagyu products offered to the market. As the industry body for Wagyu in Australia the Council considers the Association has a responsibility to provide such a service, although it should not be mandatory. Brands owners should specify their own product specifications, and market and police their own brands. The Associations service development in this area needs to be thought through very carefully with input and all members to achieve desired outcomes for the whole Wagyu industry. Genetic improvement has also been high on our agenda. A Wagyu genetic improvement program utilising the Beef Information Nucleus concepts developed by the Beef Co-operative Research Centre and supported by Meat & Livestock Australia has been considered over a number of years. As the financial year closed, plans for this concept have come to fruition in the form of the Wagyu Collaborative Genetics Research Project. Genomic test development will form the first stage, with the collection of some 2000 full blood steer samples from existing commercial Wagyu value chains. The second stage will see the genomic tests assist in the selection of the most promising young sires from across our membership, for progeny testing throughout member herds and the major Wagyu commercial value chains. It is hoped this identification and proof of outlying sires (and possibly dams) will deliver our next generation of proven sires for the benefit of all the Wagyu producers. In addition, Wagyu specific traits will be reviewed and incorporated in BREEDPLAN where appropriate. All members are encouraged to register both their seedstock and commercial breeding females and steers and record their performance in BREEDPLAN to continually improve the accuracy of Wagyu Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). This improvement will take time but with persistence and the collection of good data, breed measurement and benchmarking will become the norm for Australian Wagyu. If we don’t measure it we can’t manage it. In this light, the Digital Camera has
continued to be trailed, gathering images for analysis in Japan and the data stored with ABRI and AGBU for consistent marbling grade trait development and use in BREEDPLAN. BullSELECT BREEDPLAN field days have been arranged for 2012/13 to grow member bull selection and breeding skills. Thanks must go to AACo at Surat QLD, Pasagaean Wagyu at Mendooran NSW, Global Reproduction Solutions at Goorambat VIC and Bald Ridge at Tamworth NSW who have held or are holding the field days for all members. With the field day at AACo Surat completed by the time of this report, attendees from as far afield as TAS, NSW and QLD reported it to be very informative and productive. The next field days are on November 8th at Mendooran, November 15th at Goorambat and November 22nd at Tamworth. All members are strongly encouraged to find and attend their closest field day. Three editions of the Wagyu Update magazine across the year have carried many informative articles. Thanks to those who have helped in its preparation. All members are encouraged to contribute information that could be shared for the benefit of the entire membership. I would like to thank all the board members for their help throughout the year, including those who saw the need to resign during the period. In particular, thanks must go to our retiring board members Arthur Dew and Barbara Roberts Thompson for their contribution. To the new board members joining the team - John Spreadborough, Peter Bishop Snr and Ron Fitzgerald - I would like to welcome you. We look forward to providing you with roles and responsibilities which will make the association a success. Our thanks must also go to our resigning Executive Officer, Steve Bennett, and to our Registrar Barbara O’Shea for her patience and diligence in our cattle registrations. Also we welcome Graham Truscott to the team as our new Executive Officer we are already seeing the benefits of his industry knowledge. I encourage all members to introduce yourself to Graham at both this weekend and the BREEDPLAN field days. The future presents many more challenges and opportunities for our breed, not the least of which is the management of Wagyu integrity within the industry. Once again thanks for a great year and we look forward to the continual improvement of the Australian Wagyu Association.

Executive Officer’s Report 2012
KEY ACTIVITIES FOR 2011/12 Registrations moratorium Difficult economic conditions post the Global Financial Crisis saw many members falling behind on the registrations of animals. With the requirement for sire and dam pre-registration in pedigrees, current drop registrations were being hampered by the lack of continuity of these registrations in previous years. To catch up with this backlog, Council approved a moratorium for the period 1st April to 31st October 2011, where Herdbook registrations were reduced from $28.00 to $15.00 a head. This offer delivered a very significant increase, with 8,911 head registered during the moratorium period compared to 3,178 in the previous year. Pre-paid registrations under the moratorium rate were also approved where members were unable to complete registrations by the cut-off date, which was extended to end February 2012. ILR2 AWA’s membership, registrations and BREEDPLAN performance analysis systems are provided by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) located at the University of New England. The recording systems are known as International Livestock Recording (ILR) with the first systems developed during the 1980’s as ILR1. The system underwent a total redevelopment into a Windows-based environment, with the new ILR2 system implemented across a number of breeds since 2007. Key benefits of the new system are improved processing efficiency, and the ability to undertake BREEDPLAN analyses monthly, instead of the previous six monthly runs. This has resulted in Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) being more up-to-date and representative of the latest available performance data. AWA implemented the new ILR2 system in May 2012. A number of features are yet to be included, such as automatic billing and integration with the Association’s financial systems, due to complexities of moratorium processing. These features offer further productivity gains in data processing. The 26 AWA herds enrolled in Wagyu Group BREEDPLAN now enjoy monthly runs which are scheduled for the 18th day of each month. Export certification Official certification of Australian Wagyu registered sires and dams for semen and embryo export has continued, with exports chiefly to Europe and South America. In addition, livestock exporters have received enquiries for the export of Wagyu full blood and cross-bred heifers from a range of countries, including China and Indonesia. AWA provides breeding livestock inspection, quality assurance and certification for livestock export through the International Livestock Resources and Information Centre (ILRIC). Sample Wagyu export certificates have been provided to live exporters for Category 1 full blood and purebred breeding females and Category 2A cross-bred females. Subsidies can be obtained by importers in China for animals which are registered at origin and these opportunities are being investigated.

(Source: ARCBA 2012) Wagyu registrations have seen a steady increase over the past six years, due to the value placed on pedigree assurance for both seedstock and commercial cattle, and the increasing use of BREEDPLAN for the prediction of breeding performance. 2011 saw an overall 5% increase in Wagyu registrations. Internal reports show a 24% in registrations during 2011/12. The Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) provides an annual breed association analysis of membership and registration activity. According to ARCBA, Wagyu represents 2.43% of the total beef breeds 196,307 primary (herdbook) and secondary registrations. Nationally, the beef breeds saw a 4% increase in total registrations in 2011. OUTLOOK FOR 2012/13 As we enter 2012/13, priorities will include: Genetic improvement The Wagyu Collaborative Genetics Research Project has been circulated to all members for feedback and approved by the Council. The MLA Donor Company has approved the granting of Commonwealth Government funds for research and development of $135,000 as matching funds for AWA’s equivalent contribution. This total project budget of $270,000 will deliver Stage 1 by June 2013, producing a genomic SNP chip test for pedigree classification plus genomically enhanced Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) in a test environment. The SNP test and genomically enhanced EBVs will assist in selection of promising young Wagyu sires for progeny testing in Stage 2, to begin in July 2013. Stage 2 will be designed using experience gained from Stage 1 with the plan once again to be circulated to all members for feedback. Wagyu EBV accuracies will be increased using genomic and phenotypic data from the project. Overall AGBU predicts that the project will increase the rate of genetic gain in the Australian Wagyu
population to over $5.00 per cow per year on the Wagyu Full Blood Index, significantly higher than the other beef breeds. Registration system efficiencies ILR2 will continue to be improved to reap greater processing efficiencies and improve service to members. This will include automated billing and financial system linkage, plus automated genomic data transfer to and from University of Queensland Animal Genetics Laboratory. Graham Truscott
Executive Officer
Treasurer’s Report 2012
The Council has resolved to set up an Audit Committee to oversee the financial and risk aspect of the Association. Bob Officer has graciously accepted the position as Chair of this committee. The Council would like to thank him for the work he has initiated in respect of this Committee. The financial results for the year are best described as lack-lustre and follows on from a relatively similar result form 2011. As you will see from the audited accounts:
Our income was up by $121,694 over the previous year. o DNA typing was up $88,974 and Registrations up by $59,661. Both of these grew
out of Council’s decision to reduce fees through a moratorium to grow the registration of full blood Wagyu cattle. During this period our registrations grew by 5730 registrations or 180% over the moratorium period compared to the same period in the previous year.
Our total expenses for the year grew by $142,380. o This was largely attributed to a $20,477 increase in Conference costs which meant
our Conference generated $6081 positive contribution against an expectation of about $20,000.
o DNA typing costs increased by $109,815. This activity, whilst slightly positive in
contribution of $12,377, was substantially less than the $33,000 in the previous year.
o An extraordinary expenditure of $20,000 was required for upgrading our ABRI computer registration system from ILR1 to ILR2.
o Our legal fees were up by $14,331 due to work undertaken to protect our intellectual property.
In summary, with the software upgrade considered an extraordinary expenditure, net surplus is virtually equivalent to the previous year. Some good investments were made, our cattle registrations were up by an overall 24% and we moved to protect our intellectual property. We have a very strong balance sheet – largely cash and a very good program and budget for the next 12 months that will see our Association gain good momentum. Frank Whitford Honorary Treasurer

The company has identified the following short term objectives:
The specific areas of focus for 2012-13 are:
Maintenance of the integrity of herd book data must be retained during the migration to ILR2 and the number of registrations is to increase.
The Wagyu brand will be established.
Genetic tools and knowledge must be developed to ensure continual improvements of the Wagyu breed. BREEDPLAN is used for genetic evaluation so that estimates of the breeding value of economic characteristics can be identified and selection made of superior individuals. Refinements are required to make BREEDPLAN more relevant to the Wagyu breed and records need to be collected of carcass data. More producers need to become involved in the generation of records in BREEDPLAN and to achieve this a close working relationship is to be fostered with SBTS/ABRI. A series of Wagyu BullSELECT Workshops focusing on the use of BREEDPLAN will be conducted in QLD, NSW and VIC. The number of animals that will have an EBV displayed in BREEDPLAN must increase.

Animal Welfare
The Wagyu breed standard must represent ideal conformation for Australia and be available for reference.
The AWA accepts that maintaining the health and welfare of livestock is the responsibility of everyone in the industry.
Training the Younger Generation
Education and communication with the younger generation is essential for the ongoing vibrancy of the association.
Official grading systems do not give repeatable data from carcass measurements rendering comparisons to be of limited value. The establishment of a consistent grading system or a practical measurement of carcass qualities which are of economic importance to Wagyu is required. Value from digital image analysis needs to be demonstrated. Present preliminary results of digital image analysis at the annual conference.
Research and Development
Knowledge and Education
The association needs to be proactive with stakeholders across the industry, and in communication with the membership.
Promotion of the attributes of Wagyu must be maximized through media exposure and advertorials so that the Wagyu name is regularly exposed in public.

Basis of Preparation
Plant and Equipment
Accounting Policies
The following significant accounting policies have been adopted in the preparation and presentation of the financial report:
Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis and are therefore carried at cost less accumulated depreciation and anyaccumulated impairment losses. In the event the carrying amount of plant and equipment is greater than its estimatedrecoverable amount, the carrying amount is written down immediately to its estimated recoverable amount and impairmentlosses are recognised either in the statement of comprehensive income or as a revaluation decrease if the impairment lossesrelated to a revalued asset. A formal assessment of recoverable amount is made when impairment indicators are present (referto Note 1 (e) for details of impairment).
(a) Income Tax
Plant and equipment that have been contributed at no cost , or for nominal cost, are valued and recognised at the fair value ofthe asset at the date it is acquired.
Depreciation
Inventory is recorded on a first in first out (FIFO) basis. Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including building and capitalised leased assets, but excluding freehold land, isdepreciated on a diminishing value basis over their useful lives to the company commencing from the time the asset is heldready for use.
No provision for income tax has been raised as the entity is exempt from paying income tax under Div 50 of the Income TaxAssessment Act 1997.
(c) Property, Plant and Equipment
The financial statements, except for the cash flow information, have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based onhistorical costs, modified, where applicable by the measurement of fair value of selected non-current assets, and financialassets and financial liabilities. The amounts presented in the financial statements have been rounded to the nearest dollar.
(b) Inventories
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulateddepreciation and impairment losses.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2012
Class of Fixed Asset Depreciation Rate
Plant and Equipment 5 - 33%
Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transaction costs, except where the instrument is classified as 'fairvalue through profit and loss' in which case transactions costs are expensed to the statement of comprehensive incomeimmediately.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains or losses areincluded in the statement of comprehensive income. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluationreserve relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.
Amortised cost is calculated as the amount at which the financial asset or financial liability is measured at initial recognition lessprincipal repayments and any reduction for impairment, and adjusted for any cumulative amortisation of the difference betweenthat initial amount and the maturity amount calculated using the effective interest method.
Fair value is determined based on current market bid prices for all quoted investments. Valuation techniques are applied to determine the fair value of all unlisted securities, including recent arm's length transactions, reference to similar instruments and option pricing models.
(d) Financial Instruments
Depreciation continued
The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are:
Financial instruments are subsequently measured at fair value, amortised cost using the effective interest rate or cost. Fairvalue represents the amount for which an asset could be exchanged or a liability settled, between knowledgeable, willingparties. Where available, quoted prices in an active market are used to determine fair value. In other circumstances, valuationtechniques are adopted.
Initial recognition and measurement
Classification and subsequent measurement
Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions to theinstrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the company commits itself to either purchase or sell theasset (i.e. trade date accounting is adopted).
The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at the end of each reporting period.
The effective interest rate method is used to allocate interest income or interest expense over the relevant period and isequivalent to the rate that exactly discounts estimated future cash payments or receipts (including fees, transaction costs andother premiums or discounts) through the expected life (or when this cannot be reliably predicted, the contract terms) throughthe expected life (or when this cannot be reliably predicted, the contractual term) of the financial instrument to the net carryingamount of the financial asset or financial liability. Revisions to expected future net cash flows will necessitate an adjustment tothe carrying value with a consequential recognition of an income or expense in the statement of comprehensive income.
(i) Financial assets at fair value through profit and loss.
Financial assets are classified as 'fair value through profit and loss' when they are held for trading for the purpose of short-termprofit taking, derivatives not held for hedging purposes, or when they are designated as such to avoid an accounting mismatchor to enable performance evaluation where a group of financial assets is managed by key management personnel on a fairvalue basis in accordance with a documented risk management or investment strategy. Such assets are subsequentlymeasured at fair value with changes in carrying value being included in the profit or loss.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2012
At the end of each reporting period, the company assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial instrument hasbeen impaired. A financial asset or a group of financial assets is deemed to be impaired if, and only if, there is objectiveevidence that impairment as a result of one or more event (a "loss event") has occurred, which has an impact of the estimatedfuture cash flows of the financial asset(s).
In the case of available-for-sale financial assets, a significant or prolonged decline in the market value of the instrument is considered to constitute a loss event. Impairment losses are recognised in profit or loss immediately. Also, any cumulative decline in fair value previously recognised in other comprehensive income is reclassified to profit or loss at this point.
(iv) Financial liabilities
In the case of financial assets carried at amortised cost, loss events may include: indications that the debtors or a group of debtors are experiencing significant financial difficulty, default or delinquency in interest or principal payments' indication that they will enter bankruptcy or other financial reorganisation; and changes in arrears or economic conditions that correlate with defaults.
For financial assets carried at amortise cost (including loans and receivable), a separate allowance account is used to reduce the carrying amount of financial assets impaired by credit losses. After having taken all possible measures of recovery, if management establishes that the carrying amount cannot be recovered by any means, at the point the written-off amounts are charged to the allowance account or the carrying amount of impaired financial assets is reduced directly if no impaired financial assets is reduced directly if no impairment amount was previously recognised in the allowance accounts.
Held-to-maturity investments are non-derivative financial assets that have fixed maturities and fixed or determinable payments, and it is the company's intention to held these investment to maturity. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost.Gains or losses are recognised in profit or loss through the amortisation process and when the financial asset is derecognised.
Non-derivative financial liabilities, other than financial guarantees are subsequently measured at amortised cost. Gains orlosses are recognised through the statement of comprehensive income through the amortisation process and when thefinancial liability is recognised.
Then the terms of financial assets that would otherwise have been past due or impaired have been renegotiated, the companyrecognises the impairment for such financial assets by taking into account the original terms as if the terms have not beenrenegotiated so the tithe loss events that have occurred are duly considered.
Derecognition
Financial assets are derecognised where the contractual rights to receipt of cash flows expire or the asset is transferred toanother party whereby the entity no longer has any significant continuing involvement in the risks and benefits associated withthe asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related obligations are discharged, cancelled or expire. The differencebetween the carrying value of the financial liability extinguished or transferred to another party and the fair value ofconsideration paid, including the transfer of non-cash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in the statement ofcomprehensive income.
(e) Comparative Figures
When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for thecurrent financial year.
Impairment
(ii) Loans and receivables
Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an activemarket and are subsequently measured at amortised cost. Gains or losses are recognised in profit or loss through theamortisation process and when the financial asset is derecognised.
(iii) Held-to-maturity investments

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2012
Key estimates — Impairment
The directors assess impairment at each reporting date by evaluating conditions specific to the company that may lead toimpairment of assets. Where an impairment trigger exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is determined. Value-in-usecalculations performed in assessing recoverable amounts incorporate a number of key estimates.
(l) Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgements
The directors evaluate estimates and judgement incorporated into the financial statements based on historical knowledge andbest available current information. Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are based on currenttrends and economic data, obtained externally and within the company.
(k) Membership Subscriptions
Membership of the company is based on the calendar year from 1 January to 31 December. To match membership feesreceived to the finanical year ended 30 June an adjustment has been recognised for membership received in advance.
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is notrecoverable from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GSTreceivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables orpayables in the statement of financial position.
(g) Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investmentswith original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within short-term borrowings incurrent liabilities on the statement of financial position.
Cash flows are presented on a gross basis. The GST components of cash flows arising from investing or financing activitieswhich are recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO are presented as operating cash flows included in receipts from customersor payments to suppliers, except for the GST component of investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as operatingcash flows.
Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rateinherent in the instrument.
(j) Goods and Services Tax
At the end of each reporting period, the company assesses whether there is objective evidence that an asset has beenimpaired. If such indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of theasset, being the higher of the asset's fair value less costs to sell and value in use, to the asset's carrying amount. Any excess ofthe asset's carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised immediately in the profit or loss, unless the asset iscarried at a revalued amount in accordance with another Standard. Any impairment loss of a revalued asset is treated as arevaluation decrease in accordance with that other Standard.
Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the company estimates the receivableamount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.
(h) Revenue
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).
Impairment testing is performed annually for intangible assets with indefinite lives.
(f) Impairment of Assets
Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services receivedby the company during the reporting period, which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with theamounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.
(i) Trade and Other Payables
Revenue is recognised when the right to receive the revenue has been established.
