Dear Taylors Hill Community, LITERACY, NUMERACY and BOOK WEEK
What an exciting week we have had here at THPS! All of our Literacy and Numeracy celebrations have really highlighted the love of learning we have in our school and strengthens our values of Learning and Personal Best. Our week of extra-curricula activities have included a Multi-Age Games Day, fantastic Classroom Door Displays, exploring the CBCA Short-listed books for 2018, our annual Book Dress Up Day and Parade, Buddy Reading, ‘Reading On The Green’, shortlisting the THPS Book of the Year Competition from our student authors, and each year level has engaged with a special incursion in the form of a poet, a performance or a cartooning workshop. So hopefully your child has been talking to you about these special events and making a connection to the importance of literacy and numeracy learning. FAMILY NUMERACY NIGHT I would like to thank all of the families who joined us on Tuesday night for our Family Numeracy Night. It was wonderful to see our students working with their parents and extended family, using their thinking skills and building their concept knowledge in an enjoyable way. Our Numeracy and 21st Century School Improvement Teams developed a great range of Numeracy experiences and all of the teachers enjoyed being a part of the night. BOOK CHARACTER PARADE The Book Parade is one of my favourite events in our school calendar and this year certainly blew me away! The effort and creativity that went into student costumes this year was outstanding and the ‘buzz’ around the school was such a pleasure to be a part of. To all our families, thank you for supporting your child to be a part of a memorable day. It was obvious that there had been family craft projects being created together and a lot of thought went into the connection to a book character, so THANK YOU! It was great to see so many visitors to our parade, giving our students a wonderful audience to parade in front of. I’d also like to thank all our staff who also put in lots of effort to dress up and get into the fun of the day. This is a great event for everyone to strengthen our community connections and enjoy learning together! A week of events like this takes planning and organization, with assistance from our whole school team. However, I would like to recognize the work of our Leading Teachers – Theresa Zoccoli, Louise Spalliera and Erin Holland in coordinating and leading this special week.
VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING
CHALLENGE UPDATE
A big congratulations to the 175 students who have already completed the Premiers’ Reading Challenge at THPS, an amazing achievement! There are still many students actively reading and working towards completing the challenge, so keep up the great work.
Just a friendly reminder that all books need to be entered on the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge website by the 7th of September. Please follow the link below for direct access to the website:

Looking for a local Kindergarten? We offer 3 and 4 Year Old Kindergarten sessions across different times in our Double Unit Kindergarten, even a session on a Saturday Morning! Incorporating play based learning and a combination of teaching approaches, we offer a Kindergarten Program that children can feel safe and secure in exploring and learning. Enrol through BPA Children’s Services for the 3 year old program or pop into the Kindergarten for an enrolment form. Enrol through Melton Council for our 4 year old program or drop into the Kindergarten or at Caroline Springs Library to get an application.

GOAL POST PADDING
Our Junior School Council have been focusing on SAFETY around our school and any areas for improvement. A JSC representative, Sean from 6B attended our last School Council Meeting with suggestions from their meetings. One of the things JSC was keen to implement was safety padding for our goal posts on the oval. So I am pleased to announce that we now have new pads on our AFL goal posts as an extra safety measure for our students. A big thank you to our JSC for making such a thoughtful suggestion! ATTENDANCE
Every day counts and every minute matters at THPS because we want all of our students to make the most of every learning opportunity our school offers. Our Term 3 Absence Data has certainly been interesting to look at …
But let’s highlight who had the lowest number of absences for Term 3 Week 5 …
The year level with the lowest number of absences for the week was the Grade 2s with 24 students absent for the week
across all Grade 2 classes. And the class with the lowest number of absences was Grade 4C with only 2 students absent for
the week. This is a great effort! We really want people to be at school, but we understand if students are sick. However, it is so important that you let us know why students are away. Unfortunately last week, we had 50 students who didn’t explain their absence. So if your
child is away, please use Compass or ring the office on the day so we know that even though they are not at school, they are still safe. Danielle Stella Principal
BBBBOOOOOOOOK K K K PPPPAAAARRRRAAAADDDDEEEE On Wednesday the 22nd of August, we held our annual THPS Book Parade; what a wonderful occasion it was. Students and staff came dressed up as their favourite book characters to celebrate a love of reading and literacy! Each grade showed off their character with a walk, spin and turn. It was pleasing to see the engagement and enthusiasm of students throughout the parade. A big thank you to families and staff who put so much effort into their book character costumes this year, they truly were amazing!

Science Week Activities Static Electricity Lesson
Maybel and I, Neveah, taught Grade 5E during Science Week. We had a great time teaching the grade about static electricity. We had fun experiments prepared and which the found students fascinating. The activities included ‘The Balloon Attracting the Can’ and ‘The Balloon Attracting Hair’. All of the students tried their personal best and were fantastic to teach. We would like to thank Ms
Comley for allowing us to teach her grade.

Biology Lesson
Tara and I, Frances, delivered a Biology lesson to Grade 1E. We talked about different animals and their habitats. The students were given an animal card and they to match it to the correct habitat. They also completed a workbook which had animals to colour in and draw the animals’ natural habitat. Ultimately, the experience was fun for the students for us and the students. It was a bit hard to get the students’ attention at times, but Ms Amiguet’s guidance made it much
easier to deliver our lesson.

Biology Lesson Gurleen and I, Shanzeh, taught a Bilogy lesson to Grade PB. Our lesson involved seed planting and the life cycle of a butterfly. We delivered our presentation and it really went well. Something that didn’t go so well was having too many activities and too many instructions. Something that worked well was asking the students questions during the presentation. It helped us to understand what they were thinking. The students did an excellent job in relation to their
behaviour and effort. We had so much fun.

Human Body Lesson Claude, Penny, Angelina and I, Ashlee, taught Grade 3A about the human body. We gave the class a quiz involving naming the parts of the body. Then we showed the students how to make a split in skeleton. At the end of the lesson, we used the human body mat and the students had to place the body parts in the correct place. Everyone had a fantastic time and the students learnt a lot about the
human body.

LEARNING CENTRE NEWS! What a great start we have had to Literacy, Numeracy and Book Week! Games, activities, special guests and our wonderful Book Parade! The imagination and enthusiasm shown by students was a sight to see! Well done especially to parents who helped in making outfits.
To continue the celebrations and promote reading all students will be given a Scholastic Book club catalogue tomorrow. This is a great opportunity to grab a bargain, stock up on a few gifts and for those super organised families start buying for Christmas! Every purchase benefits the school with new books added to the Learning Centre and Classroom Libraries. Parents are encouraged to use LOOP and pay on-line or send the order form with name, grade and the correct amount in cash.
ALL ORDERS MUST BE RECEIVED BY:
WEDNESDAY 29TH AUGUST
In the Learning Centre Mrs Baron and I have been busily adding GENRE labels to our fiction, chapter book collection. This gives students another tool when making a reading choice, books are also shelved in author alphabetical order. So whether browsing through the shelves or searching using ORBIT students should be able to make an informed choice.
The CBCA books will be available for loan next week and we are lucky to have all the winners in our collection. A great opportunity to start a conversation not just about the story, families could talk about the merits of a winning book.
We hope you all enjoy the rest of the week.
