At the beginning of the period, the 23d Infantry occupied Division
reserve positions with the forward CP on LINE WYOM!NG vio CT365217, and
rear CP vic CT3414, Camp Indianhead. The 1st Battalion was attached to
the 9th Infantry; the 2d and French Battalions were conducting'training
vic CT3414; the 3d Battalion was conducting training and continuing
improvements on LINE WYOMING. The Special Units, Heavy Mortar Go (less
the 2d platoon attached to the 9th Infantry}, Tank Go (less the 4th
platoon attached to the 9th Infantry), and Hq & Hq Co (less the Counter-
fire Platoon attached to 37th FA Bn), conducted unit and specialist (1}
training.
Scope of training while in reserve and the percentage of time devoted
to each subject, included: patrolling - 30%, with emphasis on squad patrols
at night; weapons training - 10 ~ with range firing of individual and
crew served weapons; platoon tactics - 20%, with emphasis on practical
field exercised at night to stress fundamentals of patrolling; compaqr
tactics - 10%, including one night-raid problem; miscellaneous - 30%,
including bunker construction, command conferences, Character Guidance,
inspections, ceremonies, winter indoctrination, map reading, and language (2}
training far non-English speaking soldiers.
The mission of this training, which was conducted6 hours a d~
6 d~s per week, was to increase the effectiveness of patrols and increase
the confidence of the men in superiority of weapons, communications, and (3)
tactics.
A Patrol Planning School was set up to be conducted an Battalion
level, to instruct compan;r commanders, weapons platoons leaders, and
potential patrol leaders in the planning and support necessary far the
conduct of and efficient patrol. The instructions included: responsibilities
of Battalion 8-2, S-3, and company canmanders; tactics, techniques, comm-
unications, clothing and equipment, weapons, and enemy patrol tactics.

On 1 December, the French Battalion and two (2) platoons frau. 2d
Battalion participated in a parade and decoration ceremo~ awarding the
Korean Presidential Unit Citation, by the President of the Republic of
South Korea, to the French Battalion.
At 0308001 December 1952, Co L passed··to operational control of the 2d
Infantry Division, while the reaainder of the 3d Battalion continued training . (5)
and improvements on LINE WYOMllfG.
Co F and Co a. -which were attached to I Corps on 29 November 1952 for
special duty vic CS266793, lVere relieved from attachment and closed 2d
Battalion Reserve ~a vic CT345138, Co G at. 032lo6I December 1952, and Co F
at 0401:301 December 1952. At this time, the 2d Battalion was devoting train-(6)
ing time to care and maintenance of clothing and equipment.
On 6 December, the Regiment conducted a decoration ceremeny with all (7)
units participating.
Co L reverted to control of the 3d Battalion at 081800I December 1952.
At_080815I December 1952, Co F departed their previous~ reported
positions to assume a mission of security of Camp Casey vic CS3198. They
closed into the new area at 0809351 December 1952.
The French Battalion asmruned responsibility for securit,y of bridges (8)
vic CT323102 and vic CT378092 at 081200I December 1952.
At 1010001 December 1952, one (1) platoon of L Co departed ao area {9)

The 1st Platoon, Heavy Mortar Co, was attached to 9th Infantry effect-
ive 131630I December 1952,- relieving the 2d Platoon, which closed Co area
at 131800I December 1952.
'lhe 1st Battalion was relieved from attachment to the 9th Infantry at
141200! December 1952, and reverted to regimental control in reserve area
Camp Casey vic CS3198, at 141331I December 1952.
The 4th Platoon, Tank Co was relieved from attachment to the 9th (11) .
Infantry effective 141200I December 1952.
On the 15th of Deceml:)er, the 3d Battalion departed LINE WYOMING for
Camp Casey vic CS3198, less one (1) platoon from L Co remaining as security
of FTC #1, and one (1) platoon from K Co remaining on LINE WYOMlNG.
K Co (-) closed new area at 1508231 December 1952; I Co at 15o905I
December 1952; L Co and M Co at 15.13051 December 1952; and Hq Co 3d :Ekl (12)
at 151430I December 1952.
On 15 December 1952, the Conmanding Officer, 23d Infantry, received
verbal instructions from CG, 2d Division, alerting the regiment for a move
to Koje-do. The Regiment was to move by motor and rail from present
locations to Inchon. From Inchon, the regiment was to move by water to
Koje-do and upon arrival, would relieve the 17th Infantry, with the mission
of SecuritY. of Prisoner of War Compounds.
On the evening of 15 December 1952, elements of the 23d Infantry that
were attached to the 9th Infantry, vrere relieved. Co E. was relj.eved and
returned to control of parent organization closing at 152310! December 1952.
1st Platoon, Heavy Mortar Co, 23d Infantry, was relieved and returned to
control of parent organization closing at 152045I Decembee 1952.
At 16lOOOI December 1952, the Battalion Comanders and Regimental
Staff were informed of the assigned mission and the activity that was to
follow. Each unit was to conduct inspections of all TO&E equipment. These
inspections would result inthe turn-in of faulty or worn out equipment and
improvement in appearance and operation of all' .~quipment.

One (1) platoon K Co was relieved on LINE WYOMING and closed Co
area, Camp Casey, at 161500! December 1952.
At 1624001 December 1952, G-3, 2d nlvision, notified the Commanding
Officer, 23d Infantry, that one (1) Battalion of the regiment would go to
Cheju-do and that the regiment (less one Battalion) would go to Koje-do.
At the same time, the regiment was ordered to fGna two advance parties:
one consisting of four (4) officers and four (4) enlisted men to go to
Cheju-do; and one consisting of nine (9) officers and nine (9) enlisted
men to go to Koje-do. The 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry, was designated as
the Battalion to be ·dispatched to Cheju-do. The advance parties were
formed and departed at 171330! December 1952.
One (1) platoon L Co was relieved of secruri"tv" mission of Fie #1 vic
CS4178 and closed to Co area Camp Casey vic CS3198 at 161910! December

The French Battalion was relieved of security of the bridges vic
CT323120 and·vic CT378092 at 161030! December 1952.

On 17 December 1952, all units of the regiment began a training program
which consisted of the following subjects:

On 20 December 1952, a team consisting of six (6) ot:ficers reported to
the 23d Infantcy. The team consisted of five (5) officers :f.'rom United
Nations Command Prisoner or War Camp Number 1 located at Koje-do, and one (1)
officer from United Nations Command Prisoner of War Camp Number 8 located
at Cheju-do. The mission or this team was to assist the regiment in the
Specialized Training program that was current]J" in progress. 'lhe team
accomplished this mission by instructing all units of regiment in the subjects
indicated above b;y an asterick ( *). This team further assisted the regiment
by informal orientation talks to various commanders and staff officers.
On 20 December 1952, the departure date of 23 December from present
location was postponed until after 1 January 1953. At the same time, the
regiment was ordered to assemble at Camp Casey (CS3198).
The French Battalion (less two companies) departed Camp Indianhead
vic CT359140 at 2209001 December 1952, and closed new area vic Cs4178 at (14)
222Ql3I December 1952.
The Specialized Training program which began on 17 December 1952, was
completed on 23 December 1952.

During the month of December, the 23d Infantr,r was in Division
Reserve: from 1 to 26 December at Camp Indianhead vic CT3414, and. 26
to 31 December at Cainp Casey vic C33198.
Only screening patrols were dispatched and there was no direct
contact with the enemy forces. The screening patrols were periodicallY
dispatched in the areas:L!in and around the reserve positions for unauthor-
ized personnel.
The Battalions of the Regiment and the Intelligence and Recon'1aissance
:I-latoon of the 23d Infantry, cond'JCted these patrols under the -supervision
of s-2 Section. The Regiment.9l s ... 2 section supervised and coordinated
all intelligence training a11d :::~.ctivities carried out withjn the regiment.
The Gaunter-Intelligence Corps attRched to the Regiment screened

During the month of December, the 23d Infantry received 278 ~eplace
ments and llO hospital returnees. There were 5 battle casualties· and 108
non-battle casual ties. Thirty-seven officers and u97 enlisted men ~.vere
either rotated or transfer,··ed, resnlting in the Regiment's being at 90.3%
strenzth, and the French Battalion at 96.9% strength at the close of the
period.,

During the month, four men were tried by courts-martial: 1 General
and 3 Special.,
The Grav-es Hegistration Ser•t lee section handled 5 bodies.
The morale of the friendly troops was consider21 excellent.
Services of the American Red Gross ~rere available to all personnel
throueh Mr. Emmitt L. Damron, Field Director, American Red cross.
F~vr Chaplai~swere available for personal consultations. Every
Sunday they c ~nducted religious services.
The Special Service Officer made movies and special service shows
