From the Campus Principal

Welcome to the latest edition of the Tenby Schools, Penang newsletter.

The mid-November to early-December period in a school is an interesting time, as rather than slowing down as the

end of term / end of year and Christmas break approaches, life for students and staff becomes increasingly busy.

Teachers are rushing to ensure that all required content has been covered, assessments have all been done,

parents have been met and that student reports have been completed. Some of our National School students have

final national examinations to complete, and all students have to ensure that they have met the deadlines set by their

teachers for the submission of work. The School‘s administrators and office staff are also extra busy with new

enrolments, exiting students, preparing for the next budgetary period, ensuring that the maintenance programme is

set, and a million other tasks.

On top of this, there are always a large number of events that are held, either celebrating student success through

award ceremonies, celebrating cultural or religious festivals, or celebrating student talent through musical

presentations, plays and events. I am always very humbled by the School‘s community when, despite that additional

loads on time and energy, they always find a little more of both to ensure that this time of year is always so

successful.

Last Friday night we joined with Sri Tenby Primary and Tadika for their presentation of “A Long Time Ago”. It was a

wonderful interpretation of the story and the students were clearly very well-rehearsed as the show went without a

hitch. I was especially pleased to see such a big turnout of parents and guests who clearly enjoyed the show

immensely.

Last Thursday saw Sri Tenby Secondary School celebrate Deepavali / Diwali, and once again the attendees were

entertained with cultural enactments of the meaning of Deepavali, and also with musical items in keeping with the

celebration. It left me with an urge to visit India during the Deepavali / Diwali celebrations in order to experience the

festival on a much larger scale.

Thursday evening provided us with the latest edition of “Tenby’s Got Talent” and once again, the large crowd in

attendance was held in awe of the musical and performing abilities of our students. Each year the quality of

performances increases this year the diversity was quite amazing with everything from ballroom dancing / tap

dancing / street dance / Latin dance to speed stacking. Also student renditions of songs were interspersed with

outstanding student interpretations and adaptions of other songs. Tenby truly does have talent.

For many in attendance, a highlight was the Staff vs Parent competition that was included for the first time. The

parents had obviously spent considerable time practicing and managed to win the crowd vote as winners. I am sure

that this will signal a healthy rivalry for ―bragging rights‖ in years to come. Staff have already begun to plan for next

year‘s Tenby’s Got Talent.

I am sure that more will be written of these events in the next newsletter, and at the moment I would like to publically

acknowledge the wonderful contributions made to the education and life of our school by every member of the

School‘s community who all demonstrate time and again that they will always go the extra distance in order to

ensure that Tenby Schools Penang continues to be successful.

TIPS U11 team came 2nd in the recent tournament. They played Uplands, St Christopher, Alice Smith KL on

their way to the final where it was a draw. They then went to penalties. They played brilliantly and were a credit

to the school. Thank you to Ms Jackson & Mr Zaff for training the team so well.

SEC

Another good news for Netball match held on 18th November 2016 against Uplands, result as follows :

Tenby B won over Uplands C by 9-3

Tenby A won over Uplands B by 6-0 , their match was cancelled short to 2 games instead of 4 as normal

match because Uplands had to leave early.

Overall, the new players have gained confidence to play better after beating Straits International School 2

weeks ago that we won 17-0... Uplands teams were stronger but we managed to pull ourselves and played

with good teamwork... an impressive improvement !!!!

From The Head of STPS

Greetings. The academic school year 2015 is coming to an end. The last day for the academic school year of 2015

will be 3rd

December 2015. Although the school year is ending we still have a few things to do in order to complete

the school year.

The UPSR 2015 results were released last week. Congratulations to all the students, the school did well and up to

expectations. We scored 100% in English, Mathematics and Science and 95.8% for Bahasa Malaysia

(Pemahaman) and Bahasa Malaysia (Penulisan).

On the 20th November 2015 we staged our Sri Tenby Primary School Concert 2015. This year the title of the

concert is ―A Long Time Ago‖. This is truly the production of Sri Tenby Primary School. The script of the concert

was written by Miss Josephine Ooi. In the play the characters were taken from all the children stories like Little

Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Smurfs, Sleeping Beauty, the fox and the three pigs and many others. These

characters were weaved into an adventure and fantasy story accompanied with melodious music and lively

dances. The selection of music and the choreography of the dances were done by Mr Prakash and assisted by Pn

Komala. The other teachers also played important role; Pn Pooneswari for training the main characters, En Ariff,

Mr Gregory Anthony, En Redzuan, Miss Lim, Miss Noor Shuhada for the realistic props. The rest of the staff

played their part during the day itself acting as runners, make-up artists. Last but not least thank you to parents of

Sri Tenby Primary who helped in dressing and making-up the students for the concert. The concert was a huge

success based on the comments and compliments given by the parents. I would like to say a big Thank You to

everyone who has in one way or other contributed to the success of the concert.

The ―Deepavali Open House ― was on the 26th November 2015, 12.00 noon - 2.20pm. The children performed

interesting items on that day. Lunch was on a pot-luck basis.

Students of Tahun 1,2 and 3 went for a day trip to the Penang Bird Park on the 24th November 2015. They were

engaged in fun and educational activities during their visit there. All came back tired but happy.

Chinese Calligraphy Competition

On the 18th of November 2015, a calligraphy competition was held at Sri Tenby

Secondary school.

Students from Forms 1 to 4 in STSS.

participated in the competition. The

competition was challenging and tested our

patience as every single stroke of the

Chinese characters has to be precise! We

wrote and rewrote each character several

times. We often felt like giving up but we

persisted until we were able to write

characters worthy to be exhibited.

On a lighter vein, there was laughter as we

looked at ‗masterpieces‘ produced by

friends who wrote with less steady hands!

In perspective, we learnt to write with

patience, with skill and we appreciated

calligraphy as an art. It was a good

experience for everyone and an

opportunity to learn new things.

The judges were our Mandarin

teachers, Ms. Teh Xing Yee, Mr. Tan Beng Chuan and Ms. Chang Yin Yin.

Prizes were awarded to winners of each category. - By Nadea, Evelyn, Ashley (F1)

He won the Grand Prize in the Junior Category

(below 18 years old). In the 2015 Malaysia

CanonPhotomarathon Competition. Competitiors

From the Head of TISS

Dear Parents,

We were very happy with our response from the first parents evening of the Year. The attendance was excellence

and showed a significant increase from last year. Thank you for everyone who attended as these events are

essential for teachers and parents to talk about the learning experience of the students and the grades they are

heading towards. This helps the partnership of teachers, parents and students to work together and make sure that

success is praised and targets for development are discussed. I believe it was a balance of a very professional,

organised event but also had the atmosphere of care and support that we are very proud of at our school.

I hope to meet more parents in the future at such successful events.

Warm regards,

Mr Paul Walton

Mobile Learning – Learning Chinese with your Phone

Since the beginning of the month, the Chinese Department has been joined by a new member of staff, Ms Leow

Choy Khim, who is conducting studies as part of her PhD in Educational Research on Second Language Acquisition

(Chinese) with Mobile Technology Integration. Ms. Leow

was the Malaysian awardee for the Joint PhD Research

Scholarship in Peking University, Beijing, China and

University Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. She

has more than 5 years teaching experience in teaching

Chinese language in International Schools and online

classroom. She has been actively involved in Years 7 to

10 classes. We are very happy to have her in our

Department and Faculty and hope to get better insight on

how we can meet the needs of all our language learners,

including more new technologies in our teaching.

- Ms Sophie Mazaz (Head of Languages).

Students at Tenby International Secondary have already

had two exciting weeks of mobile learning sessions.

―We had fun learning with the mobile phones‖, ―Teacher grouped us into chat-rooms to learn to speak‖, ―I can listen

back to my voice and it helped me to improve my speaking‖, said students who participated the mobile learning

sessions.

Mobile learning has made learning-to-speak sessions more effective.

Students have been using voice and text messaging technologies in

learning to speak Chinese. They learn with the teacher by using phone

applications, called a ―blended-learning‖.

This is a learning-oriented approach which aims to facilitate the learning

target by matching the learning nature of our students today - the digital

native.

Acknowledging the effectiveness of mobile

technology, Tenby International School is

making every possible efforts to integrate

technology into today‘s classroom to facilitate the

teaching and learning while overcoming the

issues concerning the nature of technology, the

psychological dimension and as well as the

appropriateness for learning situations.

Following scholar Stockwell (2013), mobile

learning has attracted many language teachers

by its many technological and psychological

attributes which can be used in the classroom.

St Josephs’ Home - Food Expedition

When purchasing goods on a tight budget and an even tighter

timeline, three things must be taken into account: speed,

efficiency, and cost. It requires an efficient team of individuals able to synchronise or at the very least harmonise

opinions, thoughts and actions… Or simply a rag-tag group of enthusiastic teenagers. On the supposedly-ill-fated

Friday the 13th (November), our humble bunch of shoppers were hot on their wheels – trolley wheels, that is.

Straight after school, three twenty on-the-dot, the congregation set off for the hunting grounds. Splitting into pairs,

they set off through a maze of aisles and signs with Ms Paula tailing behind. Covering the store, a particular duo

alighted upon the vegetable section. Procrastination and laziness is a plague from which many adolescents are

unable to escape. In this case, the statement stood its ground. On a whim, pre-packaged organic vegetables,

imported from who-knows-where, who-knows-how (and who-knows-why) were tossed into the shopping cart – to

disastrous consequences.

Satisfaction with a (wrongly assumed) job-well-done,

our controversial heroes were chastened to find that

they had taken the most (unnecessarily) expensive

vegetables in the selection – and that they had

chosen quite a substantial amount, too.

Now, with their senior supervising them, the goods

were returned and different options were made

available.

The antics did not end there.

Tofu were ―un-shelfed‖, then ―re-shelved‖, chicken

parts puzzled over and clothing articles (specifically

undergarment) tossed in for good measure. There,

after the deed was done, some of our characters left

the store, home bound, whilst others headed for the

orphanage (for which they were shopping for).

Arriving at St. Joseph‘s home, our remaining battle-weary warriors delivered the spoils of war to delighted faces and

repeated phrases of ―God Bless You‖. All in all, it seemed luck held out at the end.

Our Under 11 Boys team played last weekend in a tournament against a range of teams from across Penang and

Kuala Lumpur. We were very proud of how the boys played in every match with their great skill, commitment,

positive attitude and teamwork. After doing well in the preliminary rounds they won 1- 0 against Uplands in the semi

final This put them in the exciting position of being in the final. The whole team were so happy and excited. They

gave 100% in every kick, tackle and shot throughout the whole game. By the final whistle, however, it was a draw so

they then had to prepare for penalties. Despite fantastic goals and amazing saves, they lost 3 - 2 on penalties. We

would like to thank Ms Jackson & Mr Zaff for training the team so well and supporting them through this tournament.

It was good to see so many parents and staff supporting the children at this event too. Thank you everyone involved!

identified the message and designed their own. Their posters are clear and convey a messages about how we need

to care for our planet. This interesting IPC unit has been very informative and relevant to the children , helping them

to understand the many issues to do with our climate and how it is effected by many factors around the world.
