Dear Friends of STAND!,

As the season changes, our commitment to ending family violence stays the same. And while aspects of our work can be challenging, we nevertheless find much to celebrate. Families reuniting, survivors thriving and children growing up healthy are just some of the reasons we have to be excited about our work and remain hopeful that we can accomplish our mission to end the cycle of violence in Contra Costa County.

This month, we are celebrating causes that move us towards a future free of violence. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, so we are highlighting an incredible program out of Bay Point that protects some of the most vulnerable members of our community—young children—

through screenings and supportive services for the whole family. Every single day in the U.S., between four and seven children are lost to abuse and neglect and those who survive suffer from life-long effects on their health. By promoting healthy development in babies and children and empowering parents to be the best caretakers they can be, we can prevent the violence that claims so many young lives nationwide.

None of our life-saving programs would be possible without the work of our volunteers, who we honor every April during Volunteer Appreciation Month. STAND! was founded in 1977 by a dedicated group of volunteers and nearly 40 years later, they continue to be the backbone of our organization. In this issue, we highlight community groups who give back and hear from the volunteers themselves about why they donate their time to STAND! (And be sure to check out standffov.org/blog to see who gets honored in our monthly STAND!ing Ovation series!)

Our staff, volunteers and supporters work diligently year round to elevate the voices of community members who have experienced violence and to raise awareness of nonviolent solutions. Together, we are able to bring our life-changing services to over 15,000 people every year. Thank you for being part of that change.

In celebration,

Gloria J. Sandoval Chief Executive Officer

SUPPORTING EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT Continued from cover

After a further referral and an in-depth assessment, Caleb was diagnosed with high functioning autism, a developmental disorder characterized by peculiarities in speech and language, the inability to interact successfully with peers and problems with non-verbal communication, among other indicators.

Thanks to First 5’s screening tool, Caleb began receiving services to aid in his development. In addition to the individual support they receive at the Regional Center, Caleb and Joanna also participate in First 5 Bay Point’s weekly class for children with developmental delays. By intervening early, both Caleb and Joanna got the support and guidance they need to get off to a good start and learn how to thrive while adjusting to Caleb’s autism. Now 4 years old, he is enjoying preschool and is beginning to speak.

As for Joanna, she has become one of STAND!’s biggest advocates for screening children for developmental delays.

“Even if you don’t think they need it, have your child assessed,” she says. “Once I knew about Caleb’s autism, I could understand him more and support his development better. I don’t get frustrated with him anymore because I know that, for a child with autism, his behavior is normal.”

STAND!’s First 5 Bay Point center advocates passionately for early detection of delays not only for the impact it can have on children’s development, but also for its value as a tool for child abuse prevention.

While over 6 million children are abused every year in the U.S., kids with disabilities or developmental delays are nearly 3.5 times more likely to be victims of abuse or neglect than those without.

While Caleb is not being abused or neglected, children with autism, Down syndrome or an intellectual disability are especially vulnerable to physical abuse because parents can become frustrated by the child’s behavior and respond harshly.

First 5 Bay Point offers free developmental delay screening for every child that comes through the center, as well as classes to teach parents about child development and their own child’s unique strengths and challenges. Identifying a delay early can help mitigate frustration and confusion for both parents and children while helping the whole family access the support and resources they need.

ASQ screening is only one of many services STAND! provides at First 5 Bay Point. Serving a primarily Spanish-speaking community, the center teaches English-language skills to prepare children for school. Last school year, 85% of kindergarteners who had been enrolled in the First 5 Bay Point language skills program were able to start in mainstream kindergarten, as opposed to being placed in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. By preparing kids to be successful in school, First 5 can prevent frustration—and the oft-accompanying violence—down the road.

“We work a lot on self-esteem,” says Vicki Coster, Prevention Manager at First 5 Bay Point. “This program is all about giving people the skills they need in life so they don’t find themselves in unhealthy situations.”

With free classes in Early Learning (for 0–3 year olds), Parent Education and School Readiness (for 4–5 year olds), STAND!’s First 5 center in Bay Point supports health, happiness and success for the whole family.

Give to STAND! and Help End the Cycle of ViolenceYour gift will make it possible for survivors of abuse to access the assistance they need

to rebuild their lives, for parents to learn nurturing, violence-free techniques and for

youth to educate their peers on identifying and stopping unhealthy dating relationships.

Together we can end the multi-generational cycle of family violence.

Why Volunteering Matters: As Told by STAND! Staff and Volunteers

Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian ChurchOn February 21, the congregation of Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church (LOPC) gathered at the Rollie Mullen Center for One Sunday, their annual day of volunteering at STAND! Over 30 volunteers from the church rolled up their sleeves to deep clean and paint the communal living room, remove old cabinets and sinks, install new ceiling tiles and more. They breathed new life into the community garden and brightened up the children’s Rainbow Room with a fresh coat of paint. LOPC has a deep commitment to their community and is a longtime friend and supporter of STAND! One Sunday is a great example of how much difference just one day of volunteering can make.

Helping Hands for AllSTAND! staff are passionate about prevention work with youth, so we were thrilled to learn about Helping Hands for All, a group of young people (ages 7–17) who have self-organized to support local organizations. Each month they select an organization and collect donations from the community to support the organization’s mission. This past January, Helping Hands for All collected clothing, food and hundreds of pairs of new shoes for residents of STAND!’s emergency shelter. They hand-delivered the donations after school and stayed to learn about STAND!’s programs and why their support matters. Helping Hands for All represents the support, collaboration and action it takes to break the multi-generational cycle of violence. Their group is an inspiring reminder that social change doesn’t have an age requirement.

Academy Awards Benefit VolunteersNone of the glitz and glamour behind this year’s Academy Awards Benefit Party would have been possible without the hard work of our volunteers. From preparing auction items and setting up the venue to serving food and selling raffle tickets, our volunteers were there to make sure the night ran smoothly. Special thanks go out to: Danielle, who helped the Development and Marketing team every step of the way; Eric, who for the past seven years has flown all the way from the Pacific Northwest to support STAND! at this event; and Karen, who worked tirelessly soliciting donations for our silent auction.

Volunteer Appreciation DinnerJoin us! The theme is “Celebrating and Dedicating” and the event is open to all staff and volunteers.

Joanna was worried about her youngest son, Caleb. At 2 years old, he was not reaching any of the developmental milestones his 4-year-old brother, Andrew, had when he was 2. She brought both boys into Bay Point’s First 5 Center, an early childhood development center run by STAND! For Families Free of Violence for children ages 0 to 5 and their parents. While Andrew flourished in his School Readiness classes, Caleb spent his Early Learning classes unresponsive, staring at the walls and easily agitated.

First 5 Bay Point staff noticed his behavior and spoke to Joanna about screening Caleb for developmental delays. Joanna declined the screening, saying Caleb was better at home. It was not until she brought him to the doctor for a hearing test and he refused to cooperate that Joanna realized her son was struggling in ways she did not understand.

“He was starting to hurt me and his brother,” she said.

At their next visit to First 5 Bay Point, which offers free classes to parents and children six days a week, Caleb took the Ages and Stages Questioner (ASQ) assessment—a tool used to detect developmental delays in young children, when intervention is most effective and least expensive.
